I used to have an old VW camper bus, it leaked oil like a sieve. I replaced the engine and tweaked it with aftermarket header and exhaust system. It would lift the front end off the ground on take off after all the mods were done. I had to sell it because my wife was afraid to drive it, I on the other hand loved it. To this day that was one of the worst decisions I believe I ever made. I always loved the original VW smell.... Good memories

My Dad (who passed last Dec) had 2 bugs he commuted to work nightly as we grew up. My mother learned how to drive a stick shift in the late 60's which a rare thing for a lady and this ended up being my brothers first car when he got his Driver's License. That thing had slotted chrome rims, the best stereo Alpine system w/ Kenwood speakers and was a super clean car b/c my family kept all their vehicles in mint condition. People to this day will comment on social media about his car. Unfortunately, he was the family member that lost his battle w/ cancer at 35 years old (w/ a 3 year old son at the time). My mom lost her battle in '08, but my dad went to the ripe old age of 85! Love you "Pops!" I bought one and currently started back restoring after a 2 year layoff b/c of personal reason. I want to dedicate it when finish to them all!!! This story touched my soul and made me smile b/c we have many pictures of our younger days w/ that old bug! I hope to finish this (in Florida) by Winter's end. Wish me luck and great job to these family members from past and present!!! :)

Hey Keith, sorry to be delayed on this response. Along my labor of love of this restore, I constantly asked my departed owners "what would you do" for paint, not staying stock on this or that, should I spend for X, on and on, they were with my whether they wanted to or not. You know, probably not, but in spirit and my heart their memory is kept alive, until the bug hit the streets. Now there is a whole other chapter, people just love the bugs, so my departed family members get the love, not me, its for them. They gotta be happy with that outcome. For some reason they loved their bug, and now I do!!! I wish you tons of enjoyment, greasy hands, busted knuckles and googling Samba on your journey and destination for your bug. It is well worth it when you want to take a drive. You will be someone in your bug, when you get into your other daily driver you will be invisible/just another car, such an odd thing this bug world is. What part of Florida? Am near Miami.

Hey quick question I have a 1970 VW bug that I am restoring and I was wondering how you got the driver seat out. I got the passenger seat out no problem but the driver side seat is refusing to move it goes forward a little bit then stops as it is about to come off. Anyway advice on how to get it out fully?
@CapnTimbo4 жыл бұрын
Funny you should ask, I just pulled it a couple days ago. In the inside of the driver seat right rail by the shifter and and just behind the slide adjustment handle, and you will want a flashlight, is a piece of spring metal on the underside of the rail keeping the slider from coming. If you have two people this works best, one person takes a regular screwdriver and press down on the metal keeper on the end towards the back seat, you will see that it will push down, then another person is on the driver door side and pulls on the slider release and moves the seat forward to clear that keeper. If one person when try to slide the seat the screwdriver tends to slip off, but if you keep at it you can get the seat to clear enough to then go to the driver side and slide it the rest of the way off. Passenger side way easier...

What material did you use to put over the molded foam for your seat? I don't like that gray original stuff my 65 vw bug had. :)
@CapnTimbo3 жыл бұрын
I saw a youtube video where they went to Advance Auto and got a roll of auto carpet to really extend the life of the foam. I like how it turned out as it also really firms of the corners of the seat.

Wow! That looks GREAT! What polishing compound did you use on your windows, and hubcaps?

Well it fell into my hands when the previous owner passed away (my son), and his wish was to restore it, so a lot of love put into, and now: A New Bug Lover (me)!

Danke! I learned a lot about the beetle (Europe) / bug (US) from historic videos, this was a journey well beyond turning wrenches for sure!

Love the video and the car! What color is the exterior color?
@CapnTimbo4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The paint is Eastwood Sub Zero Blue Pearl 4:1 Basecoat, I did basecoat and clear as the hope is we will be spending time near beaches and the clear will really help protect against salt air.

Great video, I have a question for you though I'm about to restore my 71 super beetle and am wondering how you stripped and painted the vent area just below the rear window. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
@CapnTimbo2 жыл бұрын
Wilbur, I did not have access to a sandblaster but that would be preferred. I used airplane paint stripper and just kept brushing it into the cracks as far as possible. Then used a pressure washer with the highest pressure and narrowest nozzle and gave it hell. The issue at that point was going to be rust so as soon as it looked dry sprayed a bunch of pain prep using a nozzle into the area. It was not like that very long after that we primed and painted it. It's been a few years since we painted it, not seeing any issues in this Florida humidity and salt air.

@@CapnTimbo thanks so much for your response, like I said was just making a list of all the areas that need work (a lot sadly) but most were areas that had easy access so thanks again for the advice
