They used fiber optic cable in these cadillacs.That thing on the back seat was actually fiber optic sensor there are two red dots that glow at night if the taillights are working and get brighter if the brake is applied. if a bulb is burned out the corresponding dot wont work. the fender turn indicator has three dots on each side that light, one is amber if the turn indicator is working, one white if the low beam headlights work, and one blue to show if the high beam works. they also used fiber optics to light a ring around the keyhole on the doors. when you got to the car at night you pushed the button to open the door this lit the interior of the car for 30 seconds to let you see if a person crouched behind the drivers waiting to mug you, and also lit the keyhole so you didn't scratch the paint trying to insert the key to unlock the doors. This system ofcourse let thieves see you left your fur on the back seat for him to steal too.
@loucostabile8 жыл бұрын
Hi, Great comment, thank you for sharing your knowledge, Lou
@dmcnamara98596 жыл бұрын
rockubtzer: They can best described as 1 phase fiber-optic tubes....they transfer light from one point to another. There is no "sensing"as you describe....the indicators on the fenders and mount on the back horizontal roof structure are just plastic indicators. There is no LED or any electrical BS,etc. to make it happen. I should know....I have a 74 Coupe Deville...the tubes were damaged before I acquired the car....I simply got some good used ones at Pick N Pull for free from a FWD Deville....just modified the run to they would be long enough for the 74. Obviously if a bulb is weak or burned out.....there will be little/ no transfer of light to light the plastic indicators. Being....during daylight you can't see much (if any)indication from the front fender 1s....as the brightness of the sun/daylight is stronger than the "lit" indicators show. Very inexpensive gimmick in the day.

This car is a Baller! Such an elegant color combination. That is not an electronic eye in the rear seating area. That's what shows that your rear brake lights and turn signals are working - similar to the headlight/park light monitors on the front fenders.

I have the same car in Harvest Yellow/white interior and have had it since 1988. That device on top of the back seats is not an automatic headlight dimmer, it's part of the fiber optic system that shows you if front or back light bulbs have burnt out. When the lights are on (or brake applied) the red lenses back there will glow; same with the three lenses on either side of the front fenders.
@loucostabile8 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Cool ride you have and thank you for sharing your knowledge on that device on the top of the back seats. Lou

@TheHelado367 жыл бұрын
Thanks David you explained it better than anyone else ! Do yo think those lines on the hood were original?
@life02ab4 жыл бұрын
Just a stunning car. The little unit above the back seat - at the base of the hard boot - is NOT the High Beam sensor - that's under the hood in the grill. That is the fiber optic indicator for the rear tail/ stop/ turn signal lights. The car has front fiber optic indicators as well, mounted on the front fender tops, so that as you drive, there is a blue dot/ yellow dot/ white dot that light up when the high beam - blue/ or low beam - white / or parking - turn signal bulbs are lit -so you could tell if one was burned out!!! These were on most Caddies of the era forward , as well as some Buick and Oldsmobile cars. This fiber optic system was one of the easiest ways to determine if the car had been crashed as rarely was this system repaired after a crash. Was trying to remember what year the 502 started being used - 1971? - which for at least that year and the next they were Pre smog dummy down. Could really MOVE!!!

Beautiful car love the fact he drives it and is keeping it so nice. Makes me miss my 87 Brougham. Cadillac made such awesome big cars. The way they ride is so great and smooth. You almost float down the rode. Cadillac had the highest H.P. of all the GM large displacement power plants with 400 H.P. in 1970 with the 500 C.I. V8. @ 12:06 It doesn't have two radiators. The larger one in back is the radiator and the thinner one in front is the A/C condenser. I believe you'll find the same setup on all cars with A/C. If the radiator is somewhat larger than normal it might have been ordered with the trailer towing package, which is what GM called their heavy duty cooling option. I ordered it on my 1978 Olds Cutlass Supreme despite never intending to tow with the car. I simply didn't want any overheating problems.

Th owner doesn't know what he's talking about. The first year of front wheel drive was 1967 model year; and the little "eye" over the middle of the back seat is the fiber optic tail light/brake light monitor, not headlight dimmer. There are similar fiber optic monitors on each of the inside of the front fenders. And the "wood" on the dashboard is genuine plastic. I had a similar 1974.

Incorrect, The "cat eyes" as they have become know located where today's 3rd mounted light are located are rear light and blinker fiberoptics. While driving, one could glance at the rearview mirror to see if both "cat eyes" were light and this would indicate that you have tail, brake, and blinker lights working. You also have them on the hood fenders to show High beams Low beams and blinker. The Hi/Lo sensor for the headlights is within the front grill. Also, front-wheel drive was a first for Toronado in 66' and Eldorado in 67'. Toronado used to be the test car for Eldorado.

Cadillac Eldorado first front wheel drive was in 1967 .that is not electric eye in the back , that is a rear light indicator that setting on top off the rear set shows when the stop and turn signal is working.

Eldo convertibles were really sought after, especially once the decision was announced in 1976 to discontinue them. I really like the shade of gray on this one. Unfortunately here in the Midwest they rusted away within 5-6 years. It sounds weird today as car bodies last much longer. It’s too bad that these cars didn’t last longer in everyday use.

Hi Dave, They were the hot item in 1976 with the scare of no more convertibles. Thanks for viewing and sharing. Lou

I have the 76 Cadillac EL Dorado Convertible. -California Wouldn’t drive it every day. Special occasions, when I wear a suit.

Its not the electronic Eye! It's the rear Lamp Monitor system. There are fiber glass cables from the rear lamps to the Housing so u can controle if rear lamp works. It was optional . The electronic Eye called guide Matic was placed behind the front Grill in These days

Electronic eye on the backseat? I don’t think so. That is the fiber optic indicator for the tail lights and turn signals in the rear. I can’t believe the guy didn’t know that since he owned the car for so long.

I guess the owner of this 73 Eldo doesn’t drive it much because the device in the middle of the back seat isn’t for headlight beam adjustment. It is rear brake light indicator. Step on the brakes and the lights in the device shine red.

Near where I go to school somebody has had a '73 Eldorado Convertible just sitting out on the street with the top down. It's a great car, red with white interior, but the interior has gotten completely ruined from the rain and snow we've been getting. I'd love to buy that car from whoever has it, but the problem is I've already got another Cadillac that I'm working on right now. So who knows, maybe I'll just have a collection of Cadillacs some day.

I can really imagine this huge car parked outside of my flat. ..Sweet.. but really, I can't imagine How I WOULD've managed to park it -Or drive it thru the tiny roads into this cramped little car park (-but it would still look awesome.) I don't think I've thought this one thru very well.) Another fine luxo-barge Lou. Especially if you have the room to park it.

Yes, though it is spelled Toronado. The Eldorado followed in 1967 using the same transaxle, but with the Cadillac engine.

Wow! The Admiral of the fleet doesn’t have it this good, because this battleship Is much better at cruising and is much more luxurious. The stories regarding how cars acquire names are always interesting, as it is for this car. My Buick Electra got named Mabel after it’s little old lady first owner.
