The constitution establishes Pakistan as an Islamic republic, with a parliamentary form of government. It also guarantees fundamental rights to all citizens, including freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. The 1973 Constitution was the third constitution of Pakistan. The first constitution, adopted in 1956, was abrogated by General Ayub Khan in 1958. The second constitution, adopted in 1962, was also abrogated by General Ayub Khan in 1969. The 1973 Constitution was drafted by a Constituent Assembly elected in 1970. The assembly was dominated by the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), led by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The PPP had won a landslide victory in the 1970 elections, and Bhutto was able to use his party's majority to push through the 1973 Constitution. The 1973 Constitution has been suspended or amended several times since it was adopted. It was suspended by General Zia-ul-Haq in 1977, and again by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999. The constitution was restored in 1985 and 2002, respectively. The 1973 Constitution has been criticized by some for being too complex and for giving too much power to the central government. However, it has also been praised for its commitment to democracy and human rights. The constitution remains the supreme law of Pakistan, and it is the basis for the country's political system.
