Kevin prior to rebuilding my GT80MX I finished a restomod on a 76 MR250 which caused me some grief but I figured it out and it’s a great bike! I’ve got to send pics..You would appreciate it.

Kevin like you suspect a cheap flux core welder. but these welders many times don't get the penetration needed, especially on thick hard steel like you have here. that said bet you will be able to heat the weld and use a puller and crack it off with minimal damage to the shaft splines. great winter project.

I will check into that tip

my 1974 Honda xl 250 has a little play in the counter shaft gear, it is splined and has 2 bolts like the Elsinore. found out that the play is totally normal, guess the PO on your bike decided to fix that.

Whenever I have to split a case, it's best to just replace all the seals and bearings while I'm at it.
