My dad had 1974 Continental two door coupe. That car was indestructible. Guy in sports car struck the rear. No damage to the Lincoln with big massive bumper. The sports car had its radiator destroyed.

What a great story thank you so much for sharing that amazing memory I had an 88 Lincoln and my parents had a Ford Econoline van I didn’t know that they parked behind me it was dark and I just jumped in my car in fact right into the van and there wasn’t any damage done to either vehicle and I hit it pretty hard big boom my dad came out and was like what the hell and he looked over at both cars and there wasn’t a single scratch or dent The only thing it made was a big crashing noise

Bringing back memories again. My great Aunt (Dad's aunt) had a gorgeous 1970 Continental Coupe. Other than the grille it looked identical to the 73. The grille was horizontal bars, and with the hidden headlights it brought to mind the coffin-nosed Cord 812. Hers was a beautiful "Pastel Yellow" with a white leather interior (if memory serves). I loved it, no vinyl top, and to me looked like lemon sorbet. Riding -or rather wafting-along almost silently with just a hint of far-away rumble as a youngster, that back seat seemed like a huge living room sofa. And she had traded her flawless, white-roofed Bermuda Coral 1957 Lincoln Capri for it. I'd love to have either of them now.

This vintage of FoMoCo vehicle often had tilt steering wheels, as THIS car DOES. The tilt function is actuated by pushing the turn signal forward. This also has a "rim blow" steering wheel, which came with the cruise control steering wheel switches. Ford used vacuum reserve canisters made out of metal for years. When they used 2 vacuum canisters, one was for the HVAC control system and the other was for the cruise control.

"rim blow" deserved a prize for the all time worst option name. It was also kind of a crappy option: annoying to use when new and damn-near impossible after the vinyl had hardened for a few years. I don't know why automakers tried so many ways over the years to put the horn button in the wrong place.

I don't think the Town Coupe had an oval opera window from the factory. Some dealers or owners had them added aftermarket to dress it up a but & make it more like the more expensive Mark IV. My father gave me a 73 Lincoln Continental 4dr in 1979. I was just 18-19yrs old. It made me feel like king of the world when I drove around in that beautiful land yacht! And what a chic magnet!! Mine was forest green w/matching nylon top & cloth interior. Beautiful 😍

My dad bought a 1972 Lincoln coupe as a used car in 1975, it was a beautiful car. Nearly identical to this one. It was the most quiet, smooth and comfortable car I have EVER been in (emphasis intended). It could go 100 mph all day in perfect comfort and in silence. The negative - it handled like a boat and we got 11 mpg. I can tell you from personal experience it was the BEST car ever to borrow from dad to impress your date. Sold it in 1982, wish we kept it.

The speedometer on this vehicle consists of a circular drum behind the facia which rotates as speed increases or decreases, giving the impression of a white bar moving across the numbers to indicate the speed. It's a very cool effect.

I have owned a 1971 Lincoln coupe for 25 years now. White leather interior, rare vinyl top delete option, original black paint. They only made 8000 coupes in 1971, no idea how many black cars with the vinyl top delete were made. I love my car.

Both scenarios, gimme my Lincoln TC's! I had a 73 2 door, dark blue, dark blue leather interior, white vinyl top. Car was a BEAST! You should've shown off the trunk. There's a reason the mob used these things. You could fit 5 or 6 bodies easily in the trunk on the way to the construction site 🙂 Only issue was in city driving, you could actually watch the gas gauge dive towards E. Thirsty thing! BTW... The headlight doors being up when the car is off is a sign that the vacuum lifts are leaking. It was the curse of all the big FoMoCo's with hidden headlights. Exactly what I was thinking, that first photo showed the 'eyelids' open, which means there is a leak after the big vacuum tank OR at the manual valve under the hood, which no one really knows about. However, behind the LH headlights there was a rotary valve which would let you open the eyelids manually for washing the car...

Back in the day I rode in a few of these. When we were going up a long hill, I remember seeing the gas gauge moving towards the empty side on the gauge. They literally drank that much fuel on a incline. They would also glide down the road effortlessly. I also rode in a few Cadillacs back in the 1970's. The Lincoln was the quietest, and most comfortable car ever sat in. A friend of mine had a two door Continental from 1973. It was rear ended by a Honda. The Lincoln had no damage. The Honda was totalled. When you put four or five adults in a 1973 Lincoln the total weight is more like 6000 pounds. A tank it was. When you parked it was better to dock it because parallel parking one of these was a real problem. The car was too long to fit in most parking spaces. Some people also could not fit these into their garages, and had to park them outside. My neighbor had a four door, and it just barely fit into the garage.

Town Car Interior trim package became an option on the 1969 Lincoln Continental sedan. This option was continued for the 1970 model. In 1971, Lincoln offered an additional limited edition Golden Anniversary Town Car and that was the first year of the "TOWN CAR" fender and deck lid plaques. 1973 was the first year for the Town Coupe option. In 1981, the Town Car/Town Coupe name was applied to all standard Lincoln model and the Continental name was reserved for the Mark VI. Those oval opera windows are after market accessories and not factory installed. There is no obvious parking brake release handle since it is released automatically when you shift into reverse or drive.

I had an 88 Lincoln town car signature series and to this day even after owning 34+ cars that is still the best riding car that I’ve ever had. I wouldn’t mind owning another one and it didn’t get that bad of gas mileage either I had a 302 with the electronic fuel injection and AOD transmission.. if you put pot that up to about 20 miles an hour and slam on the gas thing take off like a rocket I raced a buddy of mine who had a Camaro it’s like a 1987 Camaro wasn’t anything special but the look on his face when I was passing him was priceless. He was like how lol good times

My grandparents bought a 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark IV. An olive green metallic with a light green velour interior, the car was a stunner to behold for a 16 year old me. The car literally floated over bumps, seams and imperfections on the road, with an eerie library silence. Equipped with a tape deck and factory cruise control, the car, to me was the epitome of luxury. My grandad would drive the car purposely over street curbs to show off the sumptuous suspension. Unfortunately on a cold day in Oklahoma, with freezing drizzle coating all the roads, my grandparents were driving this majestic ship of a car and suddenly as the car was approaching a freeway overpass, both front wheels sheared off (don't ask me how, this was the report of my grandmother) leaving the heavy car to slide on its front bumper. Amazingly, the car suffered virtually no damage and the misinstalled front-end was repaired at the local Lincoln-Ford dealership near Ardmore Oklahoma. Disgruntled with the whole mishap, my grandfather promptly traded in the Mark IV for a Cadillac. I was disappointed with the change for looking inside the Cadillac I noted that the headliner looked exactly like the cheap stuff that was in my dad's Chevrolet. And the Cadillac didn't seem to ride as isolated as the featherbed suspension of the Continental.

Continental Mark IV’s were built from 1972-79. The Mark III’s were built from 1969-71. Mark V’s from 1977-79. If the car had oval opera windows, it was a Mark IV or V, or VI. Mark III’s(69-71) did not have opera windows. The Town Coupe in the video had custom opera windows, they were not available from Lincoln

Great review of a beautiful car, Jay. I learned to drive on a '73 Continental Sedan, so have a lot of experience with these. FYI, those opera windows were added afterwards not at the factory. Also, the production totals you quoted were for all Continental Sedans and Coupes, including the base and Town Car/Coupe equipped cars, which was then a trim option. If I didn't have a wonderful '73 Marquis Brougham, I'd own a '73 Continental Sedan (with or without the Town Car option) today. There is only so much room in the garage!

Conservative acceleration was essential as there was no place to set your champagne glass, except the open glove box door. But you could certainly feel the thrust applied to moving 2-1/2 tons.

I had a '77 Town Coupe' and loved every minute I had with it. It would be to big to drive and park in todays world. Because of that I would take the Town Coupe' for 1973 over the Mark. For 1973 I find that I like the Coupe de Ville best. Or OK, the Town Coupe'. So hard to choose. The Cadillac has a better green house but the Lincoln has a great dash. Love the tape speedometer. A note; the Lincoln probably has a tilt wheel. You find it by pushing the turn signal stock down. All FoMoCo's were this way (with a tilt wheel) in that era. They also had a great adjustment range and with the seat adjustments anyone could find a comfortable seating spot to drive it in. Don't like the steering wheel though.

My best friend's mother owned a 1973 Lincoln Continental Coupe, which I got to drive on numerous occasions. It did consume gas like there was no tomorrow, but it was worth it, because it had to be the smoothest riding car I've ever been in. This was in the late 1970's and gas was still under $1 a gallon, but rising. Of the two sections of would you rather...I'd take the Mark IV and on the second, the Cadillac.

THE big problem is that they dropped the compression for low-octane unleaded at the same time they switched from Gross to Net horsepower... There is no way to know how much power was 'lost' to the change in ratings or in the actual drop in compression ratios...

I had a bronze 1973 town coupe. I was 23 years old working as a rep in the Pacific Northwest traveling throughout OR, WA, ID, and MT. It had the most sumptuous interior of any car I've ever driven and was a joy to drive. Unfortunately, It only got 8 mpg and I ended up trading it in after driving it for a year. That hood looked a mile long from the driver seat. It was the ultimate land yacht.

What it didn’t get in gas mileage it made up for ride quality. Those cars were always so smooth. When driving I mean you could hit a pothole the size of the Grand Canyon and you’d never feel it.

Sorry but the Mark, for all its size, didn't just cheat rear passengers of room, it didn't have the HUGE trunk of the Town Car & Coupe'. When liquor was way cheaper in Nevada than California, that trunk came in very handy - 9 cases of liquor, 2 suitcases, a cosmetic case, a tool box, a clothes carrier and a tackle box. And going DOWN Donner Pass didn't incur any fuel penalty... LOL 80>

I've always thought that the Ford and Lincoln Mercury from the '60s and '70s, and even some '80s, are very elegant. I think these are absolutely beautiful! The 1970 - 1979 Lincoln / Town Car and Town Coupe rode a longer 127" wheelbase version of the Marquis chassis... itself a longer wheelbase version of the LTD. The Continental Mark IV (and Thunderbird) for 1972 rode on a longer 120" wheelbase version of the new-for-1972 body on frame Torino an Montego chassis.

Jay, I'm really loving the format of your channel and the cars you pick to review are super interesting. One point about this Town Coupé: You were saying you'd have to live with with the steering wheel position, but in this era of FoMoCo products, the tilt was activated by moving the turn signal handle toward the dash. Give it a try, I'll bet it has tilt wheel. :)

It looked like it had a tilt wheel feature I just wasn’t smart enough to figure out how it worked evidently it was on the turn signal stock I wonder if that’s where the horn was too sometimes they put the horn on the turn signal I think that was later though I think that was on the mark six. I saw a statistic saying the tilt wheel feature was on 93% of all continentals made that year

@@What.its.like. Next time you're over there, just move the turn signal toward the dash and the wheel will tilt. On this car the horn is on the center portion of the steering wheel. I recall the turn signal horn being on early '80s cars. First time I saw it was on an 81 Escort. I don't think it ever made its way to full size Fords.

The Town Coupe' was not offered with opera windows in 1973. Those were apparently added later by someone else. Only the Mark series had opera windows at that time. Also the word Coupe' is pronounced "coupay", not "coup". But don't feel bad, that's a common mistake made by anyone who wasn't around then. That was truly a great era for these giant American luxury cars!

Interesting...it has the same interior roof mounted upper shoulder belts like my 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass has. The shoulder belts hook into the lap belts for those that wanted to use the shoulder belts.

I actually hooked up the overhead belt in my '73 Coupe Deville the day after my father's life was saved by the shoulder belt in his '75 Malibu. To be honest, I can't remember seeing anyone else use those overhead belts, ever. They were not hard to hook up, but they looked a little sloppy without retractors and they did make the distant controls a bit of a stretch.

Who put in the Mark IV type opera windows? Obviously these were not factory until 1975 but only for the sedan. I don't like them, but whoever installed them did a great job!

Lincoln luxury indeed. Thank you for the review and efforts in the review. The only thing equal to this in 2023 is a Lincoln Navigator suv. Lincoln would looze luxury back then. Town Car carried this until the end in 2011.

1971... '72 had the compression chopped 2 points with very bad breathing heads, and then the EGR valve came along in 1973.

Actually, it's a backlite. Comes from an architectural term for an individual pane of glass. Why automakers picked up on that is a mystery to me. BTW, Jon, Grace Kelly & Jimmy Stewart agree with you on Rear Window...Hitchcock too!

First things first. Ill take the Mark IV. Nothing says "pimp mobile" like a Lincoln Mark IV or Cadillac Eldorado with gangsta whitetails! Lol! Seriously, there's no doubt about it. The Lincolns of this period were big cars. Very big cars. I can imagine how much room was in that trunk. The colors, interior layout, and interior fabrics (not to mention the opera windows) all scream 1970s! It's a shame I tossed my polyester leisure suit and platform shoes years ago!

Beautiful car, but it the "opera windows" did not come on the car. The dealer must of installed them. Also, the touchdown molding under the vinyl roof is supposed to be roof color, not car color

I agree. My family had a 1968 caddy Deville convertible, which I learned how to drive. Then a 1976 red couple Deville. I grew up, had a used 1988 cadillac Brougham. Then a red 2012 caddy CTS . Lincoln is no match for Cadillac.

Beautiful Continental there. I know it was in Vogue back in the70s but it’s a shame someone added those opera windows. Never offered on the Continentals only a Mark IV onward thing. IMO It detracts from the design of this car. I’d pick Lincoln all day long. Fit and finish were way better then Cadillac during that time period. And while I love those Imperials it’s still a Chrysler product! Enough said lol

@@What.its.like. it was a multi-function stalk! Great video! I had a 76 Mark IV and 77 Continental Coupe. And an 86, 89, and 98 Town Cars. Now have a 2013 MKS. I love Lincolns!

Out of the 80 town cars which was your favorite year I own an 88 signature series and an 89 signature series the 89 was fully loaded had leather seats visual - the 88 had velour seats but pillow side and had all of the options except leather seats digital dash and air suspension, and auto mirror. The 88 was loaded and I loved that car wish I never sold it. I had the car for 3 years and put 100,000 miles on it. The AOD transmission are the achilles heal on those cars. So I didn’t want two project ( just bought a 67 mustang) so I sold it. A couple years later I bought the 89 I put less than 1,000 miles on it. And three transmissions. And then just sold it. Get this so I took the car to a mechanic . The car drove fine until it got to 50-55-57ish and it would buck almost like on a teeter totter. Years later I found out it was the transmission, it was a common ford spark plug problem. And it would miss and cause those effects due to it spark plug being fouled. I hated my 89 LOVED the 88

@@What.its.like. there was a recall in the 89TC related to a transmission line that would melt from the engine. Then that would be the end of the tranny. My 89 TC tranny line went at about 35k. 89 TC was fave. Want a 2020 Continental next.....
