1973 BBC Mikado Act 1.
I discovered this Mikado on a video cassette at a car boot sale recently (along with an Iolanthe, and some production photographs from both shows). I have payed a friend (who works in video editing) to clean it up and copy it to a DVD for me because I believe it is more than worthy.
This is Act 1. The copy I have is of much higher quality but I have had to compress and convert it to a smaller file size for uploading here. My skills are limited so I apologise.
I hope you enjoy it and I will start on Act 2 when I have some time.
Koko - Derek Hammond-Stroud
Katisha - Heather Begg
Nanki-Poo - David Hillman
Yum-Yum - Valerie Masterson
Pooh-Bar - Ian Wallace
Pish-Tush - Philip Summerscales
Peep-Bo - Sara De Javelin
Pitti-Sing - Janet Hughes
The Mikado - Richard Angas
The Ambrosian Opera Chorus
Director - Michael Hayes
Choreographer - Bob Stevenson
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Leader - Erich Gruenberg
Conductor - David Lloyd-Jones
Associate Conductor - Anthony Hose
Repetiteur - Courtney Kenny
Graphic Designer - Bernard Lodge
Costume Designer - Odette Barrow
Make-up - Marion Richards
Designer - Richard Henry
Producer - Cedric Messina

The best Mikado I've ever seen. Wonderfully subtle. A small miracle. No one has the understanding to perform this work with this sort of perfect restraint any longer. The cast is excellent...everyone excels...and the musical performance is first rate. Can't praise it enough. Thanks!

I really wish there were a DVD of this specific version, because of all the iterations I've seen of the Mikado, this is truly one of my favorites! Thank you for posting this, I've watched and re-watched it so many times.

It is truly amazing as a choral masterpiece. The men, OK. The women, beyond my ability to describe. Of course, 1973 was the high water mark of our culture. Less tattoos, more great singing. Actually, the worst singer in this production is Ko-Ko. Usually the opposite prevails.
@DeGuillac
@DeGuillac 8 жыл бұрын
+George Soros Funny, because Ko-Ko was probably the most eminent singer in the cast. He studied with Gerhard Husch in Vienna, and sang a wide variety of roles worldwide to great acclaim, of which probably the best known is Alberich in the English-language ENO Ring under Reginald Goodall, recorded for EMI and now released on Chandos. It's considered one of the finest performances on record. Though his voice wasn't as large as, say, Neidlinger's, it was at least as good as others like Benno Kusche,, and more than filled the London Coliseum.

Wonderful. The best Japanese-costume staging I've seen, (unless you count the performance scenes in Mike Leigh's Topsy Turvy). After having witnessed some awful scenery-chewing in other productions, this one is not just a pleasure, but a relief.

They take the characters seriously... within the comic genre. Not only Sullivan's finest Savoy score, but oddly Gilbert's most human as well.

Thank you for posting this. I have an affinity for this particular one of G&S's awesome works. When 1 was little my father played Pooh-bar and for more then 50 years i have sung, played, whistled, hummed and watched videos and DVD's of this opera, and searched for the best versions - some are hideous but this one seems to be only as exquisitely mocking as was intended by G&S, who apparently saw a Japanese exhibition in England and were taken by the pomp and ceremony and fabulous fabrics of the robes.

Thank you SO MUCH for rescuing ! My late father (Michael) so much enjoyed making this, from the Beeb rehearsal rooms at Acton to the LIVE broadcast from TVC (Studio 2 ,IIRC). I was 9 years old and lucky enough on half term to attend the rehearsals, meeting the lovely cast (and falling in love with Ms Singleton as I think everybody was/is) .. and it's been my firm fave G&S ever since ! Thanks again

Thank you @DietArchitect. ACGAS was highly enjoyable for dad and many of the cast. Peter Davidson and Chris Timothy were also enthusiastic cricketers, and there was a charity cricket match at Askrigg.. and then of course everybody repaired to the pub afterwards! OP, if you see this, I wonder if it would be possible to get in touch to organise a Wetransfer copy of this for the family if that would be okay? and do you have a photograph of the VHS covers by any chance? All best!

This is such a find . Thank you for the efforts made and posting it. So many very special singers. David Hillman as Nanki Poo had a career in opera , but deserved to be so much better known. I remember him at Covent Garden singing from the orchestral pit while Robert Tear acted on stage, as Robert had bronchitis and lost his voice. He also sang in the popular productions of Yeomen of the Guard at the Tower of London. Derek Hammond Stroud was a super singing actor and I am surprised to see criticism of him here. The divine Valerie Masterson was adored by her public - it really was like a love affair. Heather Begg, Ian Wallace, Janet Hughes and conducted by David Lloyd Jones one of the most pleasant and knowledgeable conductors.

I have had the real DVD from this for years and play it in my truck all the time. The video is like old TV, but the sound is pretty good for a patched-up thing. Thanks for putting in the effort. You may imagine that I am very familiar with the art work from the DVD case and once the singing began, I knew it was the same version. I've probably heard this exact recording five thousand times! A big smile spread across my face. Attaching vision to hearing is always a pleasant thing and deepens the understanding considerably. You really picked a great version to work on. Thank you, indeed.

As you so rightly say Heather Begg made Opera Australia her base for the latter years of her career. She also spent 10 seasons at the Royal Opera Covent Garden - but please forgive if I point out that she was in fact a New Zealander born and raised in Nelson . Her first singing teacher was Dame Sister Mary Leo in Auckland (teacher of Kiri Te Kanawa.) It was so very sad that she passed away in 2009 because she was such a vivacious person, full of joy and valuable knowledge that she could have passed to the new generation of singers. A lovely, lovely singer and human being

I remember seeing this live on the tv. It was probably them first proper production for tv rather than plonking a camera in front of a prosc arch stage production. There was also a version in 1930s costume with Dudley Moore as Katisha's pianist. have you seen that one? Is the Iolanthe the one where the fairies flying to Strephon's aid look like a squadron of fighter pilots scrambling? It was brilliant.

For me Since D'Oyly Carte was killed off by the Britsh Goverment February 27th 1982 Nobody has come up with a production that I am happy with... This Production.. This is a remarkably fresh and human interpretation, which leaves plenty of room for broad comedy: the scene between Ko-Ko and Pooh-Bah is priceless (and incidentally the final line "No money--no grovel", though not in most published texts, was in fact authorized by Gilbert... no doubt another inspired improvisation by the original Pooh-Bah, Rutland Barrington). Also, the uses of the television medium -- like the occasional line or number played directly to the camera -- is well-judged and effective. Superb work from the Royal Philharmonic under Lloyd-Jones! And I love the "train of little ladies"!

I have to wonder what other videos someone who was recording in 1973 had...As a Dr Who enthusiast I have to wonder. Doctor Who had only been running in colour for three years in 1973 and some of the Jon Pertwee episodes from those three years still only exist in black and white.....I bet Im not the only person whose looked at this and wondered about the archive point of view....

@treesny
@treesny Ай бұрын
"Cannot sing"?!? Derek Hammond-Stroud was a distinguished operatic baritone well-known for "character" roles such as Alberich in Wagner's Ring cycle, as well as a concert singer of German Lieder. His singing here strikes a well-judged balance between "straight" singing and Sprechstimme, a vocal approach with ample precedent. As for his interpretation of the character of Ko-Ko, it's great to see the role stripped of the cute schtick that has accrued over the years. Like so many of Gilbert's characters, Ko-Ko is basically driven by self-interest. One of the interesting acting choices he makes in the last stretch of Act Two is to have Ko-Ko find new self-assurance and assertiveness. That final line-reading to Katisha "You've a very good bargain in me" suggests that their marriage is going to be a VERY lively one!
