1973 Schwinn Varsity Sport - Rear Hub Service

Today we serviced the rear hub, cleaned the components, replaced a spoke, and (mostly) trued the wheel. The tread was not worn, but when we took the tire off in order to replace a wheel spoke, we found the tire had dry rot. The rim edge of the tire crumbled. We will have to replace the tires. The Varsity Sport has 24 X 1 1/4 tires.

Nice! I will try the freewheel removal tool on the vice grip to crank those hard to turn freewheels👍 Really love your work space, looks like a great place to rehab bikes for a good cause😏🚲🚲👨‍👨‍👦‍👦👨‍👨‍👦‍👦

I like the “drive” and “non-drive” papers to note specs and keep parts separate. Nothing more frustrating than looking at a pile of mixed bike parts and trying to remember where each part goes.

It would nice if you included that you used a 24 spline cassette remover tool for French freewheels used on Schwinn bikes from the 60's, 70's and 80's (i.e. Normandy, Maillard, Sachs, Peugeot, etc).

What removal tool did you use? I’ve got a 70’s Varsity and need to remove the flywheel to service the bearings. My LBS doesn’t have the right socket and I can’t find a definite answer online. Thanks!
