During the test drive in the previous episode she ran great until... she didn't. Then she fixed herself... That can't be good, so let's investigate with the Snap-On Counselor II Scope.

Just thinking.... The combination of Your Knowledge + Counselor II = Vulcan mind-meld with the car. It amazes me that you can detect such subtle differences just by observing the spark profile on the scope. Then understanding exactly what minor changes to make in mixture and timing to get best results. Again, very nice job Elin.

I think you have a weak coil. You should pull a plug wire off with engine running and see what the coil is capable of putting out. It ought to be 25-30K. You should alway check is during diagnostics.

Very interesting, but I'm still a bit confused about the carb. Also, the top radiator hose looks to be collapsed when the engine is off. I wonder why. Thanks for this very useful video.

Great video. Thanks. As noted in another comment I would test coil and timing before trying to get a tune into those carbs. Keep the videos coming fascinating to watch. Cheers

Great video Elin.. I must say I'd have been drawn to checking the coil as well, but looking at the test drive and how the engine sounds, I recon you've cracked it with adjustment to the timing and carbs. I'll guarantee the owner will definitely find a difference..

after I learned to read plugs properly id given up on the lift pin technique to tune SU's I Run cars up to warm on old plugs, pop a fresh set of plugs in and then set the carb to base settings, tune it by ear for smoothest idle, then let her run for 4 minutes, pull a plug and see what it says to me, then adjust as needed, ive also found that plugs are often one heat range too cold for my environment so they always look fouled once i get the right heat range in them and tune to plug color then i move to adjusting the timing, to which you can also tune based on the spark plugs believe it or not :/

Elin Near the end of your video at time mark 37 minutes 37 seconds when you were checking the secondary wave form for cylinder number three it actually indicated cylinder number five and then when you went to cylinder number five, it did go to cylinder number five. Number three cylinder secondary wave form was never checked. Why, I don’t have a clue. Just thought I’d point it out. Great video I’m learning a lot. The big problem is I now want to go out and buy one! Thanks

Someone guestioned the HIF6 carb for a TR6. it is the 4 bolt fit to the manifold and the 1 3/4" throat. These would have come from a Volvo. As well the problem with setting mixture is due to a temperature sensitive bimetalic lever holding the jet which is rich when cold and goes lean when hot. Very tricky to get right.

Elin, I think I am right in saying that when you manually lift a carb piston on an SU carb you are creating a reverse operating scenario by inducing a lot of extra air into the mixture before enabling the velocity of the mixture to correctly draw the required additional fuel from the main jet. Subsequently the engine will momentarily act as if it’s receiving a very weak mixture regardless of whether it is actually set rich or not.

@@DavesSmallEngines enjoy it! A 74 TR6 was my dream car when I graduated from college. But couldn't afford one at the time. Then life happened and I never revisited getting one. I'm still tempted though. 🙂👍

@@jamessimmons8352 James get it before life takes your ability to enjoy it. My first car was a whipped 69 TR6 in 72, sold it in 75 and went into USN. Bought a 76 a five years ago hopefully I will enjoy it for many years and pass it on to one of my grandchildren…. God willing

Those carbs are most often seen on MGB engines. The float bowl is on the bottom. The adjuster screws tilt a lever in the float bowl up or down which raises or lowers the jets. It's very unusual to see those on a Triumph.

Hi Elin, Very interesting to see the wave forms over 6 cylinders. Sounds like that car flies now. I wonder if she'll come back one day for the clutch, be great to see her back. No Rusty today? Well done and good luck from Spain!!

I have a pair of HIF’s on my MGB. I have always struggled to set the mixture by lifting the pistons, it never seems to give the required response. I have a Gunson colour tune set, which allows you to see the colour of the flame inside the cylinder through a small window around the plug. This seems to work well, much better in my opinion than lifting the piston. Do you watch AC Dodd’s you tube channel ? He tunes minis, but quite interesting how he goes about it. He seems to stay away from twin carb setups though.

Elin, your demonstration of the engine monitor was at idle speed (I believe) when gas mixture velocities are at their lowest. What value would there be of monitoring the engine at an average running speed (of say) 2500 rpm for instance?

Elin you haven’t mentioned fuel choice specifically but would you agree that high octane premium fuel suits an advanced timing tune the best?

I have accumulated 250,000 miles on four Triumphs. The first thing that I noticed was your customers vehicle is not a 1973. The rubber bumperettes arrived on the 1974,5,6 model year. Furthermore, with no fault to the owner or presenter, the top is retracted incorrectly. This is something I have been meaning to do a video on. The cost of buying a Robbins top and installing it is about a thousand USD at minimum.

Maybe a vacuum occurs if the system is very cold? Maybe if the car has sat for a few days between filming.
