Finally a good honest review. So many people think these are terrifying to drive but a late model VW bus actually has really decent driving dynamics for the era and type of vehicle it is. They will do 65-70 just fine, they ride well and are well made.

Its not that they wont get up to speed its just how long it takes thats what causes accidents!

Sad to see that automatic go. Don't get me wrong, I love stick and I'd rather own a stick than an auto, but the automatic transmissions were extremely rare and kinda expensive from the factory
@collinlaque9643 жыл бұрын
It had output shaft issues, but don't worry, we saved it and it's getting rebuilt for someone else's project
@michaelconverse51272 жыл бұрын
Having owned both, the stick is the way to go by far and away. Much more reliable and parts are super easy to find. They use the power much better and return better fuel economy.

My grandfather had one of these in that same color when I was younger (he died in 1983). I think one of the things he liked about it was that driving it felt like driving the fire engines he had worked with decades earlier. The spartan interior, manual transmission, and "ahead-of-the-wheels" seating position came together to have that effect.

You just made my day. I grew up with this bus. We called it “the carrot” my dad swapped the engine with a Porsche it didn’t do anything crazy HP but I thought it was so cool. I miss being a kid. Liked and subscribed. I’m a vw fan boy so do more man!

From 1977-79 the horsepower on the 2000cc motor is 67 horsepower, and , this Bus in the review is 67 Horsepower. 0-60 is 33 seconds. From 0-50 they can accelerate as quickly as 13.9 seconds. Mine is a 76 Automatic. Around town it feels ok. Passing a car on the highway, not really. LONG highway grades, OYYYY. Steep short hills, no problem. Plan to spend thousands to get them running safely, once up and running well they can go distances pretty easily. I wouldn't recommend highway travel speeds beyond 60ish. 65 is ok, but vary speeds 55-65 regularly so it doesn't run too hot. I love it. I also want to add that the Bus was NOT built for fun. It was a workhorse, built for businesses, there were ambulances, police Bus's, Even fire truck Bus's. They were used in schools, at convents, etc. etc. Now we "collect" them as fun classic vehicles, but really they were workhorses. Also, By the end of the 70's the 4 long distance land travel records were all from VW Bus's. They went everywhere.

Acceleration test. 0 to 60 in 35 seconds. My wife has a 78 model the fast one. She says when she tries to pass a semi she gets beside them and has to drop back behind them.
@michaelconverse51272 жыл бұрын
A 78 will do 0-60 in about 17 seconds for the manual, 19 for the automatic Late models weren’t bad at all for what they were. A 73 like this is about 23 seconds to 60.

Had one for a couple years, 1981- 1984. Had a Porsche engine with dual carburetors and an automatic transmission. A pain in the rear to maintain. Another issue: starting. The wiring distance from the battery to the ignition is too far. Never reliable. Worst issue: Doesn't heat well at all. Froze my ass off in Tennessee mountains. Also means the windshield fogs up like crazy.
