1973 Volkswagen Kombi Type 2 Subaru EJ25 STI 400hp Powered Campervan Build Project
Divers Street Rods took home the Hutton Builders Choice Award at Goodguys 2015 with their 1972 Volkswagen Bus. Most of the parts on this Van was sourced from a 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX. The van is powered by a 400 horsepower turbocharged EJ257 flat-four connected to the factory four-speed automatic transmission. Some of the few parts that are not from Subaru are the Wilwood brakes and the front suspension is an Art Morrison Mustang II clip.

Initially I was thinking it was one of the more "common" Subaru engine swaps, using an adapter plate to reuse a modified VW gearbox. Never expected a full-on built chassis conversion including dash & interior supports. Very nice indeed. I only wish the ending included a clip of the van driving and accelerating.

I own 71 vW BUS with a Subaru engine, and it is a good fit, and in good shape, and used as a daily driver. This HBC and it s creation is love of the build , and the highest level of integrity realized through imagination prowess that I have had the privilege to witness.. After seeing this project and it's quality I instantly became a subscriber. Thank you for letting me see this rebirth of two cars into one with a creative mix of your ideas to put it all together.

I have been driving T's, starting with T3, and currently owning a T5 and a T6, but this video really inspired me. Best Subaru conversion I have seen! The proper way to go about it! If I do mines over, I will go similar route! Use Subaru gearbox. And eliminate the original vw suspension, it doesn't really match with the Subaru power! Hands down on this build!!!

What to say.. what to say! I guess I'll start by saying this is no garden Variety Kombi Bus, that's for sure. This Well thought out Imagineering Beast is Totally Off the Hook, It definitely deserves every Car Show Award it receives in my opinion! And unlike my usual comment's I post on this channel, I would Like to offer my list of things I would do differently or change on this Fine Automobile... Ready... Not a Single thing! Nothing! Zero Items! Everything I thought I wouldn't Like while watching the Build, Seamed totally right to me when it was finished, Everything turned out Simply Beautiful! The Person or Persons that thought out this mesh of these two different vehicles Hit it out of the ball-park! Also all the workmanship turned out so Awesome. And also I would like to express my appreciation to you H.B.C. for putting this project together in a very Kool Video montage for all our Viewing Pleasure, I even noticed the Extra finished project shots and also noticed your new addition of H.B.C. apparel. This video just Proves , why cant all the auto maker, just stay with the older bodies, and modernize them, this is a beautiful conversion from old to new. but they have to build boxes in to cars, stick with what worked, that's why everyone wants a older vehicle. Great build.

I love this! I am an old air-cooled junkie but these Subaru Motors seem to be great for Hi-Tech VW projects. I have had two of these Bus's in my life and I loved both both of them. This is Awesome. I thought the Porsche Factory Racing VW Bus W/911 engine was the bomb but this kicks ASS. Everything about it!!!. I have always loved this color combo!

Awesome build by far. I've seen EJ20's hanging off the rear mating to the original box. But changes the weight of the car too much. The sub frame is the best solution. Excellent weight distribution and solid build. BTW hats off to your welder too. The un noticed hero.

Such a shame it's not suitable for cold weather camping , it would've been the ultimate camper van , mine ain't beautiful like this one nor has a new engine but it's a warm comfortable indoor living motor for 3 of us and a dog wouldn't change it for any thing all tho I like the colour on this one it's wonderful 😍😁well done amazing build

I totally agree that the sideskirts dont match the kombi style. Whilst watching the video, I couldn't help thinking that the skirts need a remodel but kudos to the builders. A labour of love. The nice thing is that is see the skirts are detachable so a remodel could be easily done to keep the "stock" look whilst also making it look lower and wider.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
