Back in 1986 my father bought a 1974 imperial as my 1st vehicle. It was tan with a vinyl roof. The car had 60,000+ miles on it and had the 440 v8... He purchased it for $800 and other than a very small ding on the passenger side lower front fender the car was in immaculate condition.. it even had the non radial tires!!! The minute I got far enough away from the house I did a burnout over 150 ft long and blew the tire completely apart.. needless to say I was grounded for a month lol... If I knew then what I know now I would have kept that beautiful hunk of Detroit steel!!! Miss that car!!!

The 18 color options that were available then put today's paltry selection to shame. My grandparents had a '76 that they purchased new. Light blue, dark blue top and boroque (sp?) interior. It replaced a gold '70 Newport that had. Granddad passed in '82, but the '76 was my grandmother's main ride until a new Olds Ciera replaced it in '90. However, she still held on to the Newport until she went into a rest home in '04, and both cars then went through an estate sale. As a kid, we made lots of long distance trips in that blue Newport.

When in high school, my girlfriend's Dad had I believe a 1975 Newport. It was medium blue with a dark blue vinyl top and blue interior. He really liked that car because it was just as big as a Cadillac or Lincoln but a lot less money. It probably got terrible gas mileage. He handed me the keys to take his daughter to the Senior Prom in 1977. He wanted her to go in style.

with the 440, I don't like to brag or anything but I get a whooping 7 miles per gallon on the high way........I thought that there was something wrong with the car at first, then I read up on it and found out that that's exactly what the mileage should be....holy crap, it's awful......BUT, that's why Lean Burn was so great, people hate Lean Burn, but Lean Burn is what makes the cars gas mileage increase and power too.

...Osborn...nice of you to let us tour your beautiful '74 Newport Custom Hardtop Sedan...with it's "red and black"??!! interior... ...at the time, Chrysler would allow particularly high-profile repeat customers or dealer owners to get a car in any paint they wanted... ...and while this car might be off-putting to very picky collectors (who would NOT be attracted to anything NOT factory original spec)...the custom color on this one makes it, IMHO, even more desirable... ...and, yes, by today's standards of minimal decoration, this Custom hardly appears to be a slightly upgraded entry-level car...but that goes to the execs at Royal Oaks commitment to producing extremely attractive full-frame mid-range offerings... to make each and every Chrysler buyer feel pampered and "special"... ...don't hesitate to show us other "cars in your corral", good sir...

I know all about Chrysler dealers trying to out-order wierd cars to show off to other dealers. I was with a Chrysler Plymouth dealer from 1977 to 81 and the owners and sales manager all tried to see who could special order the most expensive car for their personal demonstrator. Two of them had new Cordobas that stickered almost $13,000. each!! Last one I remember was a 1980 LeBaron 4door (not a Fifth Avenue) silver over charcoal with every possible option including full Crimson Red leather, moonroof, and the special five spoke wheels. Police handling package added heavy duty everything including 360 v8 4barrel lean burn system. No wonder Chrysler all but went out of business. Seems so odd to see such a grand automobile like this not come with power windows/door locks/seats. At first glance, it's what you would expect. But then, back in those days such things were considered a luxury, and I'm sure a lot of people felt they could do without them. Maybe the luxury ride was good enough for them. Times sure change!
@67marlins2 жыл бұрын
Good point, and exactly what I've been saying for years. I'm amazed at how many Pontiacs and Olds had power windows from 1962 to present, whilst many Buicks did not. It's totally illogical, unless we suppose Buick's typical buyers were older, maybe more practical and conservative, so they felt they could do without many power accessories, maybe their practical frugality. By the way, I'm not a Cadillac fan....but did you know that in one year of the Front wheel drive Eldorado, the front coupe door windows were power, but the rear '1/4' windows for the back seat passengers were crank-up manual? I think it was only for one year, maybe 1969, and only because of limited room for the power motor and hardware...something like that.

I think because of the very reason you stated....A Newport can't be too fantastic looking because then customers won't spring for more money on either a Chrysler New Yorker or an even more spectacular Imperial LeBaron. You have to upsell, so by offering this color on a Newport, you could lose out on a higher sales Ticket item.
@bradkay4 жыл бұрын
The rear treatment is 74 - 76 Newport and 74 - 75 Newport Custom. 76 Newport Custom got the 75 New Yorker rear treatment as did 77 - 78 Newport. Also power locks without power windows was somewhat common on big four doors early and mid 70s. Lots of times families would want cruise and locks even though many consider the upgrade path to be tilt/cruise then locks/windows. I agree autotemp AC is strange on this car. Although clearly not the case here there are some strange combinations due to sales bank cars. I owned a 69 New Yorker with tilt but no cruise, locks but no windows, power seat and AM 8 Track.

So the Imperial/New Yorker body details lasted from 1974 to 1978 (but not the rear side markers) and the New Yorker/Newport body details lasted from 1974 to 1978! Leaving the 1974-'75 Newport details as a two year only run! Too bad that the Imperial failed so many times just trying to be more than a Chrysler!

Not exactly right. The Newport Custom became the New Yorker in styling for 1976, but the Newport base model remained in place until 1977. It did retain it's own rear end styling, The Sedans and Wagons were gone by 78 as was the base Newport. But a 1976 Chrysler Newport has it's own rear end styling as does the Newport Custom, the former New Yorker and then the New Yorker has the former Imperial styling for 1976.
