The carburetor has been an extremely major issue trying to get this bike running correctly. Been through the carb 14 times, getting nowhere. I finally gave up on the original carb. I got one from a motorcycle junkyard, though it's very rough due to sitting outside for decades on a bike. I think I can make it work between all the carbs.... I also found a NOS carb body. It should be here in a week. In the mean time, I pulled the cruddy junkyard one apart, finding major corrosion in the float bowl, but it does clean up. A video of the nasty junkyard carburetor with the NOS part to make a good one will be in a separate video.
I did finally get the adjusting screw out of the junkyard carb... it was seized in. The idle port is much smaller in the junkyard carb than the one on the bike. That tells me someone majorly hogged out that port big time. It is very noticeable.

I always set things to the way the manufacture designed them to be set up. If you set everything to specs, you will have a fun reliable machine, no matter what it is.

Im plugging away at it. The idle port is hogged out, now that I have a carb to compare it with.

Your dedication to problem solving is phenomenal! I have a question that I'm not sure if you've already addressed. Why would someone hog out that part of the carburetor? I get the feeling someone was trying to correct a problem and didn't really know what they were doing. But with you on the case we all know that it will be solved! Keep up the good work my friend.

The carburetor was most likely badly gummed up, to where the bike wouldn't run. They probably did a Mickey Mouse job of cleaning the carb and not knowing what they were doing, they hogged out the passages to get the gummed up mess running good. Once I started ridding it, the crud must have cleared out, making it run to rich from all the ports being opened to large. Sad people do that, because it ruins the carburetor body casting. It's not much effort to pull the carb and go through it properly. Mostly its guys that really have no clue as to what they're doing that do this kind of damage. I'm hoping I don't run into other hack work elsewhere on the bike.

If you are still using the Go-Pro I saw in earlier videos, those are fixed-focus and will not capture close-up detail. My opinion is that Go-Pro cameras have their place in action photography but they have definite shortcomings when used for regular videography. I have a Hero 5 that I paid a lot of money for that sits in a box because I refuse to use it. The sound quality is that bad. Smartphones take good-quality video and can capture a lot of detail but a dedicated video camera is the best option. I've used a 12yo Samsung video camera until I finally couldn't stand to record in 720p any longer. I picked up a like-new Panasonic HDC-SD90 from eBay for $90. It's almost as old as my existing camera but shoots in 1080p, has a light and mic input. I am finishing a series on something that I started with the old cam and then I'll switch over. Good luck on the carb. Remember that timing problems can mimic carb problems. I had a 1980 Olds 98 with an Olds 350 that wouldn't idle below 1200 rpm even with the screw backed completely out. Turned out the timing was advanced to something like 25 degrees BTDC. Found that AFTER overhauling the carb. The other one was the Roadmaster that was in my very first videos. The seller sold it cheap because you stepped on the gas and it backfired through the throttle body and wouldn't go. Checked the timing and this time it was about 20 degrees ATDC. Both ran perfect afterward.

Yep, I have two GoPro 4+'s and a GoPro 8 Black which has steady cam. I do like the GoPro 8 a lot. I sometimes use my phone as it will zoom and videos nice, but I'm not use to using it for videos. My GoPro 8 records better sound than my iPhone. I guess it's all about what an individual likes and is use to using. I have a "proper" video camera that was my dad's. It zooms and focuses in detail, plus it has a macro lens for super close up's, but it only has one battery and its kinda large to carry around at events and I would ruin it in the garage. I have made a video or two with it, but I'm use to my GoPro, thats why I use it all the time. I checked the timing numerous times, even changing the timing why the bike was running. I found it runs best where I set it to factory specs, though I guess if the flywheel key is sheared a few degrees, yes it could run bad like it does. The idle port has defiantly been hogged out, now that I have a carburetor to compare it with. I'll rebuild the carb without the hogged out jet, hoping that fixes the issue. If it docent, I'll be pulling the engine apart to check that flywheel key. Funny thing is, why I was ridding the bike, it was running perfect. After about 50 miles I think the crud cleared out of the carb making it run rich with the hogged out jets. When I went to go out the next morning, it started first kick, but kept running like I left the choke on. The previous day it ran perfect, so why it sat overnight the gum must have softened and worked out when I started it. He had put a ton of bottles of carb cleaning products in the gas tank.... he showed me two of the bottles of different stuff he used in the nasty old gas. Too bad the past owner didn't overhaul the carburetor correctly, instead of just hogging out the jets to make it run with a gummed up carburetor..... or better yet if he didn't fool with it at all and sold it as a non running bike. It would have saved me time and money if that was the case. Often when I look at projects, they don't run.....

Hello Howard. How frustrating that is! Like you say, it had a vacuum leak so someone modified it to get it to run. I'm guessing you checked the fuel float level with the clear tube you spoke about? George B

When you mention the jets are hogged out are you saying that a previous owner removed material from the jet orfice to increase the opening? With those aluminum bodies of the carb maybe someone over tightened the idle mix screw and that action opened the seat so it leaks vacuum around it. I do benefit from your details of the work and persistence you show. thanks.

Yes. Due to a gummed up carb that was lacking fuel flow, someone opened the jets to allow more fuel to flow. Once that gum cleared out, then it runs to rich. There's no going back once the jets are hogged or drilled out larger.... it ruins the casting. Jets should "never" need to be hogged out. The carburetor should have been removed and overhauled correctly.

Hi Howard. Is there a small o ring and washer in front of the spring on the idle mixture screw.

Yes a very small flat washer and o-ring.... I took them out for videoing. I guess I should have shown them.
