1974 Orange Bowl

This is the 1/1/1974 Penn State vs LSU game. The Orange Bowl. The early 70's were a time when being undefeated didn't always result in contention for national cahmpionships. In particular 1973/74. Unfortunately for Penn State only one of its regular season opponents was ranked in the top 20 all year. Pitt was 20'th in their season ending rivalry clash. It was a time when Bowls preselected teams before the end of the season. LSU was undefeated and ranked 7'th when picked by the Orange Bowl. They had a Thanksgiving Showdown with #2 Alabama and then their season ending Rivalry game with Tulane, a team they had dominated over the years. It's unknown where LSU would have ended up in the polls if they had won both of those games but they ended up losing both. Penn State ended up Unbeaten and Untied with no Title to show for it again. I claim no rights.

Last season the Coaches Poll selected a National Champion before the Bowls. Alabama won the UPI title with 1 loss
