The Chevelle is a mid-sized automobile which was produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 through 1978 model years. Part of the General Motors (GM) A-body platform, the Chevelle was one of Chevrolet's most successful nameplates. Body styles include coupes, sedans, convertibles, and station wagons. Super Sport versions were produced through the 1973 model year, and Lagunas from 1973 through 1976. After a four-year absence, the El Camino was reintroduced as part of the new Chevelle lineup in 1964. The G-body Monte Carlo, introduced in 1970, also used a platform that was based heavily on the Chevelle platform, although it was lengthened ahead of the firewall. The Malibu, the top of the line model through 1972, completely replaced the Chevelle nameplate for the redesigned, downsized 1978 model year.

1st car I ever bought was a 1976 Mailbu Classic 2 door while in high school. Swivel bucket seats, cruise control, and vinyl landau roof. 305 2bbl and turbo 350 tranny. A/C. 2.73 rear axle with limited slip. Drove that thing for almost 400,000 miles. Emptied the convertor after warranty and timing chain at 80,000 miles. Replaced tranny at 150,000 miles. Never opened the engine except timing chain. Rebuilt the 2GC carb many times. A few fuel pumps and water pumps. Roof rotted after about 8 yrs. Really never rusted. (living in west Texas, so dry) Finally T-boned a 92 Grand Prix that ran a stop sign at 50mph and totaled it out. Saw a lot of the US in the "Boo" as my daughter would call it. Married and brought home 2 kids too. Really miss that car.

I had a 1975 Chevelle Malibu with the 250 straight 6 and Rochester 1 barrell carburetor. Very reliable. Got it from my Grandmother when it was about 16 years old and drove it for about 8 years. Loved that car!! I should have kept bit. The guy I ended up selling it too just let it sit.

These cars were crap and they were butt ugly. Chevrolet had been going downhill since 1972. I was driving a 1970 Chevelle Super Sport, 396 cubic inch 375 horsepower, 4 speed when these came out. Thank you Periscope film for posting this though, people think cars are crap now........

Completely agree with you. I'll even venture to say that 71 was their last good year as far as the Chevelle SS goes.

I remembered my dad's partner had the station wagon with a 454. That baby hauled more than luggage. My dad had a 73 Buick Riviera GS Stage 1, my brother & I would wash them & race each other. Neither was old enough to have a license, but we lived in the boonies, so.... I'm quite surprised to mention which car was the victor 🇺🇸

While it may have been produced mid year, you also had the Laguna, plus there's one other option that also made a Malibu look good, that was the swivel bucket seats, I know they made the 75 Cutlass I used to drive really nice, wish they had that in todays cars

75 was a real bad year for GM. First year for “catastrophic” converters (catalytic converters). Already emasculated V8s were choked further down by this. They all were prone to severe rust, but then every car including the imports did the same. Best thing you could do back then is get a Suburban if you had a family or a truck if you didn’t. They still rusted but we’re just built better.

The Seventies seemed to be marked by weary pessimism on nearly every count starting with Watergate and two gas crises, and it seems as if we've been on a downward spiral ever since!

@@davidallen5776 Also consider that the aftermath of the Vietnam War added to that weary pessimism. When South Vietnam fell in 1975, there were strong opinions of 'what a waste' that resonated in the US.

@T Holmes . . . Yep! I recall those dark days of the automotive industry in the US. Domestic engine technology was very crude back then, where carbureted-engines vehicles of that era, with its inefficient/wasteful use of gasoline, had those catalytic converters doing meltdowns in short order. The modern era of efficient electronic fuel injection (which became mainstream in the late 1980s) on vehicles can have the cat converters last the life of the vehicle.

I had a (used) 1977 2 door Malibu - atrocious piece of junk. Rusted both doors until they wouldn't shut without slamming them several times as hard as I could. Blew fuses because the not installed clock option wire was left hanging an rubbed on a sharp metal under dash bracket. Crappy 305 V8 with little power. 1970s cars were crap.
