The problem with the carburetor is that you have the fuel line going into the wrong port. The port you are connected to is a float bowl vent that should be connected to the charcoal cannister on the right side next to the firewall. The fuel inlet is the line on the other side of the carburetor. If you can get a Haynes repair manual, there is a drawing of the hose routing on page 87. One other item to note is that some types of brake fluid can damage the seals on British cars. Make sure the fluid you are using is compatible.

Even if it is a “rubber bumper” MGB, what a great surviver! Its going to clean up great! Such simple British engineering; not always the best, but dead simple. Parts not gonna be “Autozoned” but they are all over the internet, Amazon, and eBay ... and they are generally reasonably priced!

I drove and restored mgb’s for years, just connect the two wires for that inertia switch and be done with it, the starter relay and hazard switch can be taken apart and the contacts cleaned pretty easily, the su fuel pump in the trunk also has contacts that can be cleaned they are great pumps, check the brake lines on the rear axle as tow truck drivers have a tendency to hook over the rear axle with chains which can crush the lines bc they are on the front of the axle, replace the turn signal flasher if the original Lucas one is still installed as they do not work that well, think about simply replacing the fuse box as the majority of electrical issues come from an old corroded box, and the cover is missing on yours, I always ran 20w-50 oil in the carb dashpots, the water auto choke was never the best on those zenith stromberg carbs but if it’s working leave it alone, the engine mount brackets have a tendency to crack on the rubber bumper cars bc the mounts were redesigned for 75 for the rover v8 cars which were available in England, the exhaust manifolds also have a tendency to crack on the rubber bumpers, also they don’t handle as well as the earlier 62-74 cars bc they were forced to raise the ride height to meet us tail light height regulations, basically us safety and emissions regulations slowly killed the British sportscars in the us, but the cars are so simple most of it can be retrofitted to pre 74 specs

that Rover V8 you mentioned is the old Buick aluminum V8 from the early '60s. I didn't know that they found their way into the MGB as well. That's from the British Leyland era as I recall?

If I recall correctly, the issue is the clutch slave cylinder. You have to disconnect it, open the bleeder and push the piston home. Once cleared close the bleeder. Often there is a small air pocket in there.

So, two years ago the motor in my MGB took a big crap. I found a 2.8L camaro motor and thought = "why the heck not, it will fit". It did fit (tight but it's in there), converted to a carburetor (I'm not good with fuel injection), took it to the muffler shop and got duel pipes and glass pax. Had to make a new wiring harness (which was awful) and today the master cylinder for the clutch has to be replace. Once that's done....Road trip! Anyway, great video guys! Fun!

Remove and totally rebuild the carb if you want to save money and keep it totally stock. If not then fit the 45 side draft Weber and it's intake manifold. Not sure what fuel pump you fitted but the mini I had had a diaphragm pump that doesn't deliver much pressure. The pressure could be forcing the needle open over filling the float bowl. If not then replace the needle and seat.

I like the MG. I'm not a big fan of British cars, but this little ol' MGB has a lot of promise. Somebody loved that car and other than being parked for 16 years, it's had care. That would be a lot of fun to run around in out in the country. Looks to me like the paint will buff up to look really good.

we have some MGs still in england UK, i just had that same problem two weeks ago. customer brought me their car and said the clutch is non existent, looked closer at the master clutch cylinder and there was a very small hole if you look after you use soapy water on the outside then have someone pump the clutch. the best thing to do is to replace it since yours has the same parts on it as when it left the factory.

Not sure if it's already been said but the oil in the top of the carb is simply to damp the motion of the piston and needle. If it gets really cold, you sometimes need to use a lighter oil than than the normal stuff recommended for it.

It's probably the main jet that the carb needle sits in that is leaking - at least that was always the issue with old SU carbs, where the choke operated on the needle jet housing to pull it down and therefore make the mixture richer. The flex pipe that routed the gasoline to the jet housing would age and crack with the movement. There should still be rebuild kits available for these Stromberg carbs - or source a set of twin SU carbs that would have come on the earlier cars.

Welcome to the world of British Leyland :) That make of carb usually gets leaker with age because they really aren't made very well. I usually end up putting the carb on the bench and watch for where the leaks are coming from. You could try a couple of love taps on the carb in case the float's sticking. By the way there's a KZbin channel called "This Week with Cars" . Steve who runs that has an amazing collection of British cars plus ton of parts for MGs and did say if anyone needed anything to talk to him. He's in Iowa so shipping shouldn't be too bad.

Hello Randy. Greetings from Sweden. Fantastic content you always show here, please keep up the fantastic work. Your issue with your carburator could be that it does not have any 80W90 hydrolic oil, because my old Volvo had almost the same caburator and it needed that 80W90 to work, without it the needle inside doesn´t work correct, and the engine might be overfed with fuel.

maybe you can take the float bowl off careful with the gasket not to break and use a can of carb cleaner to douch out the needle and seat and the clean out the float bowl. Usually what everyone does to a sticky float needle and seat. maybe replace the needle and seat or at least the needle. Then put a in line filter on so to filter out any trash from the gas tank.

Hello Randy! If the floats are not full then it can only be the needle valve that stops the fuel from flooding! Since you had the float bowl off why didn't you check the needle valve it is right there too! Pull the little pin and the floats drop with the needle valve. KEEP IT ALL ORIGINAL! Do not change to a different carb etc. Just order a rebuild kit for that one and try changing the needle valve and seat. It will probably run great then. It sounds like it would. The rebuild kits com with a new needle valve and the seat for it that unscrews out of the carb also once you remove the floats with the needle valve attached. That car is very much original try to keep it that way to add value to it. I always mount fuel pumps inside the frame so the frame protects them or next to the frame so I know they are out of the way from running gear and speed bumps etc. Good luck! Take care and God bless you all!

Nope. I had the fuel line connected to the vent tube. That'll do it every time!
@aicsusa
@aicsusa 3 жыл бұрын
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds Yes it will. Then you could have a crack in the float also. You will find out when you take off the float bowl. I have a feeling the needle valve just got hard and leaks but with those old cars like that the floats also would fill up and stop working. It can only be one or the other. I would pull it off hook up the fuel line and turn on the fuel pump while holding the carb over a bucket and work the float up and down to see if it shuts off and also submerge the floats in water to see if there are any leaks. IF both those are ok the last thing it could be is the float level. Id someone did a DIY and messed up the float level or hooked up the needle valve wrong that would be the last to check. I think once you get the flooding fixed the rest of the carb sounded like it was working good, it idled good and revved up good the other day when it was not flooding. Good luck! Take care and God bless you all.

Randy mate people think 'restoring' cars means creating immaculate concourse things that no one dare drive. To me you are 'restoring' that 'B' to working life after being abandoned for a dozen years. THAT is both fun and worthy. That Carburettor will be a seal or gasket failure especially if its been apart as they get brittle. Whatever it is you have some really simple things to fix and when done you have a running classic car 'restored' to good health. I would have that detailing firm you use buff up the paintwork, give the engine bay a degrease and thats it. If you have time maybe repaint some of the black fittings. That car in running condition, cleaned and polished will fetch good money every day of the week if advertised in the right places. Good luck and thanks for bringing that piece of British car history back to life.

Try MOSS Motors for parts. They have both east and west coast warehouses. Was my go to for my MG Midget. Carbs on these are realatively easy to do.
