Triple option based this wishbone formation was very rare at that time and hard to play well. Sooners had good players, #5 davis, # 24 washington, many other, good coach, the most up‐to‐date formation. I was WR of some college in Japan. OU was our hero at that time & still fan of sooners. kc from Tokyo.

One sack was Jimbo Elrod and Lee Roy Selmon meeting @ the qb.... No one would stand a chance. Michigan had to get the ball @ the one foot line for their TD, otherwise they weren't sniffing the endzone against that D-front

two fg's missed, interception in the end zone,(minimum 9 points with a decent kicking game) and with Leach out for half the game, defense got worn down a bit....all things considered, pretty evenly matched teams.

Why didn't the Big 8 and the Orange Bowl Committee invite the SEC Champion Alabama to come play in the Orange Bowl? #3 OU vs #4 Alabama would have been a better game. ... The Big 8 and the Orange Bowl Committee invited SEC Champion LSU in 1970, SEC Champion Alabama in 1971.

@@ronniebishop2496 , .. S.E.C. did not sign a contract with the Sugar Bowl Committee until after the end of the 1975 season to start in 1976 or 1977 seasons. ( Ref. nytimes.com/1975/11/20/archives/bryant-in-favor -of-sec -contract-with-sugar-bowl. ) Bear Bryant and Sugar Bowl snubbed the Big 8 Runner-Up ( Nebraska ) and orange Bowl committee because CBB/Alabama felt it was snubbed for not being invited to the Orange Bowl. Bear Bryant wanted to Play the Big 8 Champion in the Orange Bowl. The Big 8 fixed their Conference Champion ( Oklahoma ) up to play a " Patsy " team in the Orange Bowl to help ensure their team a better shot at winning the N.T. Come on, ( 8-1-2) # 5 Michigan? Michigan was overrated.
@ronniebishop2496

Bamruff62 Oh I remember when Bear Bryant fixed it so Nebraska played Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl because he didn’t want to play either one. The most ridiculous move ever made, two teams from the same conference who had already played each other. Oh yeah you forgot that didn’t you. lol everyone in the country laughed their butts off at Bear and Bear was right because either team would have kicked Bama. Politics. I lost all respect for Bear that day.

The score 14-6 was not kind to Michigan, they subsequently lost by that score to USC in the Rose Bowl. Every year I would root for the Wolverines on New Years Day and they would look like they were playing underwater against faster USC/Washington teams. Ohio State wasn't much more successful, losing Rose Bowls to Stanford, USC (3X) and UCLA. I suspect the players on both teams were mentally wiped after focussing so much on the Big One each year.

They lost to 3 very good teams during that stretch in the 1970s. National Champion Oklahoma in this game. Number #2 ranked USC after the 1976 season. And they lost to National Champion USC after the 1978 season. 3 Really good teams. The weird loss was after the 1977 season in the Rose Bowl to a 7-4 Washington team!

Mildren, Davis and Lott. None of 'em could throw if you hold 'em to today's standards. But all were great at running the option. Hard to say which was the best. Also difficult to say which of their running backs (Pruitt, Washington and Sims) was best. I like Pruitt. QB is even tougher but I'll go with Lott.

seattwa 71 had no defense compared to 75 with 3 all Americans in the D-line. RB's Joe Washington v. Greg Pruitt is a wash. The Godfather of the Wishbone QB Mildren has a slight edge over Davis, but not enough to overcome the 75 defense superiority over 71.

@canWego Backintime Yes, undefeated ASU got screwed out of being named the national champion that year, especially considering the pollsters gave BYU the national championship in 1984 after they beat a pedestrian 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. ASU was able to get some measure of revenge years later in the 1983 Fiesta Bowl when they beat OU in their only meeting to date.
