Back in the 70's Big Ten teams were notorious for being one dimensional offenses that ran all over the place on their opponents but couldn't pass to save their lives. This resulted in them losing most of the bowl games they played in until they started getting more pass oriented in the 80s.

Ohio State made too many mistakes on offense, the false start penalty, the second fumble by Griffin, and the poor interception thrown by Greene. But credit USC, who ran the ball with a lot of success. Ohio State did not record a sack and I think that was a big factor in the game. Also, the last drive by the Buckeyes was a mess, with Greene taking a sack. Still a great, hard hitting, entertaining game.

Cornelius Greene made some poor throws that led to interceptions in this game, just like in the 1976 Rose Bowl. UCLA had the superior QB in that game (John Sciarra), and USC's Pat Haden was also superior to Greene in this game. That's probably why we lost both games.
@WillMuny7 ай бұрын
You are right, but also that is why the Pac 8/10 was so dominant from 66-87 (Rose Bowl years, 65-86 in regular season years). The Pac went 18-4 in a 22 year period. Granted most were USC then UCLA wins, USC with 8 Wins and UCLA with 5 wins. But Washington and Stanford had 2 wins each and even Arizona State had a win. Though I think that ASU win broke the old school mentality for the Big 10 and they changed.
@joeblow43537 ай бұрын
@@WillMuny I grew up as an Ohio State fan and suffered through those years (which included a bunch of losses to Michigan). If I had to boil down why the Pac 8/10 went 16-2 in the Rose Bowl during 1970-87, it would be the QB position. Bo and Woody always got running QB's, not passing QB's. In the Rose Bowl's, when it came time to step up and pass, the Michigan and OSU QB's came up short. They just couldn't produce.

hm. disappeared in critical games? ok, let's take a look at his performance in 'big' games (bowls, um, vs other highly rated opponents). '72- vs north carolina, who would go 11-1 that year, archie ran for a then school record 239 yds and a td on 27 carries, plus a catch for 17 yds in a 29-14 win vs 10-1 michigan, arch runs for 75 yds on 17 carries and catches the only completed pass thrown by tosu the entire game for 17 yds. he also scored the eventual game-winning td (14-11 final) on a 30 yd run. rose bowl vs 12-0 natl champ usc. 95 yds rushing on 20 carries and 2 xcatches for 27 yds in a 42-17 loss. '73-vs 7-4 minnesota, griffin returns a kickoff 98 yds for a td, and rushes for 129 yds on 15 carries in a 56-7 win. vs 10-0-1 michigan, 30 carries for 174 yds in the infamous 10-10 tie. vs 9-2-1 usc in rose bowl, 22 carries for 149 yds, including the 47 yd td that sealed the 42-21 win. '74- in the 52-7 win over 7-4 wisconsin, griffin runs for 112 yds on 20 carries w/a td, plus a reception for 20 yds. in the 16-13 loss at 7-3-1 michigan st., griffin had 140 yds on 23 carries, and 1 catch for 5 yds. vs 10-1 michigan, archie ran for 111 yds on 25 carries in a 12-10 win. vs 10-1-1 usc in the rose bowl, archie had 75 yds on 20 carries, and 25 yds on 2 catches in the 18-17 loss. his 100 total yds were the most by any non-qb except for j.k. mckay's 104 yds receiving, including his dramatic late td catch. griffin did have 2 fumbles, which i believe was the only time in his career that ever happened. '75-vs 7-4 mich. st., griffin runs for 108 yds on 29 carries and catches 1 pass for 3 yds in a 21-0 win. vs 9-3 penn st., 128 yds on 24 carries plus 1 catch for 23 yds in a 17-9 win. vs 9-2-1 ucla, 120 yds on 23 rushes w/2 td's, and 2 catches for 44 yds in a 41-20 win. in the 21-14 win over 8-2-2 michigan, griffin's record 31 game streak of 100+ yds rushing in a game (a record that still stands i believe in fbs) ends. he's held to 46 yds on 19 carries, plus 13 yds receiving on 2 catches. in the rose bowl rematch w/ucla, archie had 93 yds rushing on 17 carries, and 12 yds on 1 catch in the 23-10 upset loss. disappear in critical games? in 4 yrs the last 2 games of the season archie rushed for 818 yds (102/game) and 94 yds receiving (11.8/game), for a total of 912 yds (114/game). nope.
