#4 USC's 1974 Pac-8 title sent them to the Rose Bowl to face the Big Ten champion, 2nd-ranked Ohio State. With OSU leading by 7 going into the final minutes of the game, Pat Haden threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Mckay in the corner of the endzone. Instead of kicking the extra point and taking the tie, Coach John McKay decided to go for two, and Haden completed another pass for the conversion. USC's 18-17 win, coupled with Alabama's loss to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, vaulted them to #1 in the UPI poll and their second national title in 3 years. Oklahoma was #1 in the AP poll, but was on probation at the time and so was not included in the UPI poll.

You're thinking of the 1975 football season and 1976 Rose Bowl. This video is correct. Keep in mind that the Rose Bowl is played on January 1st, so the previous year's season leads up to it.

Thank you Coreytatum16. Not a big Trojan fan but I enjoy listening to thier games on my Sirius Radio in the car or at home. Like how they talk about high school football in SoCal. Oh and dsfddsgh, right on about the Big Deal Conference in the Rose Bowl not only against SC but also against UCLA, Washington, Arizona State....

John McKay was also known as the coach of the 0-13 Yuccaneers of 1975. The winless season was demoralizing to Mckays' legacy. He also uttered the phrase "I'm in favor of it" when referring to his team's execution on offense. He simply was a much better college coach.

But McKay getting the Bucs to an NFC Championship Game and two other playoff appearances was quite the accomplishment...back then expansion teams were truly awful and there was no way to just become good by just buying every player in sight

I saw this game. Those were the days. A tough contest all the way. I'm glad SC won; they almost had to after beating Notre Dame the way the did -- it would have been for nothing otherwise. Clutch plays in the clutch. And Skladany's field goal try at the end was short...but not that short. As for going to two, everybody has to now, after Ara tied one for the Gipper back in '66.

Arizona and Arizona State were not part of the Pacific conference at the time. Arizona and Arizona State were part of the Southwest Conference with Utah and BYU. The conference split in later years putting the two Arizona Schools in forming the Pac-10 and the others became the Mountain West Conference when they were added.

@@Jagnole101 Yes, I know. This game marked the end on the 1974 Season in which Oklahoma and USC split the National Championship. My guess, the game was shown on NBC Television and it was played at night. This was shown after the USC Trojans “upset” Ohio State, 18-17 in the Rose Bowl.

USC's schedule ended up not being as tough as first thought. Didn't beat many teams with winning records and loss to bad Stanford team. Also had 2 losses to Ohio State's 1 in same amount of regular season games-12. USC, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri did not scare me at all, Ohio St. matched up well with all of them. Buckeyes played only team that worried me all year, LSU playing basically at home for BCS championship. W. Virginia also worried me. USC a good team....For BRUTUS to poop on!!!

and another thing, so now it's not out of conference games...or out of conference bowl games, it's just out of conference bowl games against teams from the southeast? What blown call was it? The guy called PI rather than defensive holding? I was there, what's the difference? Also, mind you that Tressel was 4-1 in bowl games and everybody said he was the best big game coach in the country before the Florida Game.

J.K. McKay (#25) with a 1975 version of the Lambeau Leap after the TD that brought USC back to 17-16. Who was #26 who caught the winning two point pass? Have to admire John McKay's decision to go for the win. His last Rose Bowl, one year later he went to the Tampa Bay Bucs. After that tough loss, Woody Hayes wanted to punch out A) a camaraman B) an opposing playing C) a yard line marker D) Curt Gowdy E) all of the above.

That would be why I said 1975. I was responding to a guy who said the Bears were better than USC in 1975 and that the only reason USC made the rose bowl that year was because they choked against USC. I'm talking about bowl games. Overall 18-22 bowl record. Unacceptable! How about that bowl record against teams from the Southeast? I couldn't believe that the only win in the last 40 years was against Miami and that was with a blown call to give them the National Championship. (Which by the way, I hate the Hurricanes) One win and 11 losses in bowl games against teams from the Southeast?? Awesome! I'm going to put on my sweater vest!

In my opinion, Michigan should had been at least been considered for the national title and they were unfairly punished for not being in a bowl game. I mean, SC's only loss was one of the worst ever for a National Champion; to a 6-4-1 Arkansas team 22-7! Like I alluded to, I think that travesty was the catalyst for the Big Ten to let teams that did not win the Rose Bowl berth accept other bowl berths beginning the following year.

The first half of this game was the worst half of football ever played. The Heisman winner and runner up, both playing in their third straight bowl match up. Yet it was fumble, followed by fumble, missed chip shot field goal, missed punt! They looked like youth league players. Fine second half, though. By both teams.
