1975 Schwinn Fastback Restoration Project Part 1

This is a 1975 Schwinn Fastback, found it on eBay for a good price, it needs new cables, brake pads, tires and a complete bearing overhaul to make it mechanically sound. I will restore it to look like an early 70's Fastback by adding the Stick-shift, new fenders and a slick-chic rear tire. 1973 was the last year of the stick shift due to safety regulations, Schwinn added the handlebar shift lever.

Memories! Back when I was growing up in the 70's, my dad bought me a new Schwinn red Speedster with the 3 speed. Also had a Schwinn Approved 60 mph speedo with it. Back then, if you didn't have a Schwinn, you were nothing! Schwinn was a household name when it came to bikes. Schwinn WAS bikes!

@@that70sschwinn my thoughts excatly and it was original from the first year they made them which i think was 68 because i remember i was in grade school at the time and my Aunt paid just over 100 bucks for it...

@@that70sschwinn honestly I don't ever remember it being called violet but it was of a deep purple..it was a great color....fyi i still have my 10 speed Schwinn Collegiate that even at 70 i stil hop on it now and then

Nice! I've always been a big fan of the Fastback, one of my buddies had a yellow one and it was pretty cool with the 5 Speed Syck Shift and rear slick, I look forward to seeing the results for all the projects you have shown us so far.

Is there a guide or anything available to determine a value for unrestored vintage Schwinn bikes? I am trying to determine what is reasonable to pay for an unrestored fastback similar to the one you are working on here. Thanks

I haven't seen a published guide, value increases from year to year. Unrestored is always best, look for condition of original paint and decals, look for period correct original parts. Look for good chrome, wheel set, freewheel and hubs, original owner bikes are hard to find bit usually the best finds. I have a 77 stingray scrambler that I am in the process of restoring for my nephew... Do you know where I can find reproduction decals for it... they have all worn off... can't seem to find the scrambler top tube decals (black background with white letters) anywhere. Any sourse you know of would be helpful. Thanks.

Here are 3 separate eBay links, the first 2 are Scrambler water transfer decals in black letters and what could be clear or white background. @@that70sschwinn Thank you for trying, I have actually tried bicyclebones (Have spoken with him) the colors are inverted (black letters on white background as opposed to the 77 white letters on black background) however you did give me an idea... I might be able to order one of these, scan it into the computer and invert the colors in a program and print my own. Thank you for your help, you have a very nice channel!

I have a 64 Sting coppertone with rust on the painted frame... I'd like to clean it up but am afraid that evaporust might remove the oaint... any advise on that? Thanks!
