Me sitting here watching this game and getting antsy and jumping up yelling Roll Tide. I was 10 years old and still remember watching this game back then. 49 years ago. I am laughing at myself knowing how old this game is yet it still revs me up!! It was such a huge deal for Bama to play here in the new Super Dome. Just brings back so many great memories watching football with my dad.

I attended this Sugar Bowl when I was 13 years old. Met the Coach Bryant in the hotel lobby the day before the game. Got into the elevator and realized I was standing next to Coach Paterno and two Penn State players the day of the game. They were headed to the pep rally before the game.

as I remember Bear Bryant's suspended a few players for this game I don't know if they let him if he let him come back and play a little while but I'm pretty sure he's suspended them for the game but Alabama just played their hearts out and they beat a good Penn State team 13 to 6 roll tide thank you for all these highlights of games never available before

Good memory. Here's what we found: Twenty-three Alabama players, including Richard Todd, were anywhere from 15 to 90 minutes late returning to their hotel after a Saturday night on the town. This happened to the coach that once suspended Joe Namath before a Sugar Bowl game. But Bryant tried to be understanding, calling the incident “no big thing.” Then more players were late coming in Monday night, and Bryant stripped two of their starting assignments.

Why was the Penn State football team always fundamentally sound no matter whether they won or lost?

Mizzou played well in the opening game

@@thebreadreport9841 I think it largely had to do with intergration in the SEC vs Big 8 at the time. Mizzou (ironically) went 6-5 but beat Bama because Mizzou had more black players than most SEC teams had at the time. Bear Bryant credited Dan Devine for making the realization after the ‘68 Gator Bowl beat down that Alabama needed more black players to compete at the highest level.

A lousy, rotten memory.

The year Bear Bryant ducked 10-1 Nebraska. The Sugar bowl let him pick his opponent hoping he could back into another national championship.

@@kdbarbour1 100% fact. It was all over the news back then. The Bear ducked a 10-1 Nebraska for an inferior 9-2 Penn State who they barely beat.

@@kdbarbour1 I was a kid back then but I remember it well. The Bear tried to back into a national championship. He remembered the shellacking Nebraska gave him in 1971 and wanted no part of them or Oklahoma. He was very vocal about wanting to play Penn State who played a weak independent east coast schedule back then.

Your memory fails you or your Nebraska fans family left you with their impression. Bryant wanted Oklahoma for the national championship. Since the Orange bowl snubbed them they were out of the NC picture and he wanted to play his friend Joe Paterno
