I could only imagine how scary great Bobby Orr would have been if he had been 100% healthy! Because of his bad knees he was really never 100% over the course of his playing career but still managed to win 8 Norris trophies (still an NHL record) as the league's best defenseman and is to date the only defenseman to finish a season as the NHL's leading scorer (he did it twice). If there ever was a hockey prodigy Bobby Orr was it!

3 years since the last comments. I might be talking to myself. But I cant believe of all the comments I've seen no one talked about Vachon. I'm the biggest Tony Esposito fan and I was pissed they didnt play him. But Vachon was GREAT. Best goalie in the tourney. His .940 save % was unreal. Tretiak was .910
@intellivisionmaster7999
@intellivisionmaster7999 5 жыл бұрын
Tony Esposito was not on the roster. It was Vachon, Cheevers and Chico Resch. I can’t disagree with you; I’m just fine having Tony Esposito or Kenny Dryden manning the net for team Canada. They split the duties in the ‘72 Summit Series; 4 games each. Rogie was a great goalie (not the best) but great... and when he was on his game; he was ON !!! Other notable Canadian goalies of that era were Bernie Parent and Gilles Gilbert. Not a bad thing to have the best seven goalies in the world available to play for team Canada.

As much as team Canada was loaded with offensive talent, it was the defencemen that were the heart of this team ... they all could move the puck, headmanning the puck, great outlet passing, and a solid transition to offense. Really, Guy Lapointe, Serge Savard, Denis Potvin, Larry Robinson, Bobby Orr ... were the strength of the team. Orr and Potvin were Canada's top 2 point getters with 9 points each! And to have Orr and Robinson as a defensive pairing?? Unbelievable really.

Team Canada boosts the lineup from 1972. Dionne, Lafleur, Potvin, Orr, Robinson, Gainey, Barber, Sittler, Leech... Total domination in this game. Tretiak once again stands on his head against Canada. We could have scored 8 goals in this game, Easy !! In the next decade (mid 80’s) Team Canada goes from this superstar team to “Ridiculous” level of stardom.... Gretzky, Lemieux, Bourque, Coffey, Messier, Roy, Brodeur, Recchi, Sakik, Yzernan, Goulet, Denis Savard etc...... What a thrill to watch this match. Thanks for uploading. Go Canada Go.

Brady Dog As reported by the Montreal Gazette on Dec 12 1964 the Montreal Jr Canadian played the Russian National Team and lost in a very close Contest 3-2 . Doug Harvey added by Coach Scottie Bowman as were Gump Worsley and Red Barenson. The reporter in the article stated that Harvey played up to about 50 min of ice time against the Russian team . The next year they brought Jacques Plante in goal 🥅 which led to a victory by the Jr Canadians 2-1. Harvey was a quarterback General at the back end . Big Jean played against both Orr and Harvey --his pick was Doug Harvey . On offense , Orr had no equal aside from maybe Paul Coffey ? Who plays 50 minutes in a game in today's hockey 🏒 Bowman brought him back for one last full season in 1969 and an NHL All Star ⭐️ appearance at the age of 44 -- albeit in Montreal Orr with the one leg played more of a Harvey type game This was a great game for all hockey 🏒 fans to watch Pure hockey and no fighting Truly a great game to remember Just sidebar , a lot of the players that played Canada 🇨🇦 in 1972 were on that 1964 roster . The famed Firosov was playing who didn't play in 1972 but was on the 1964 Russia 🇷🇺 team. How many players play in an All Star ⭐️ game at the age of 44

Orr was just a shell of himself, and yet he still had a major impact on the entire Canada Cup, winning tournament MVP lol. But, that said, THE most skilled Canadian on that team was Gil Perreault. Back to Orr, when he took at pass from Sittler and shot it point blank on Tretiak, the crowd was ready to erupt for 2 reasons: 1) a 3-1 lead; 2) because Bobby Orr scored the goal. Everyone basically knew Orr was playing on one leg, so the combination of him being beloved EVERYWHERE--even Montreal--and him being universally recognized as THE greatest player, the home crowd wanted to erupt in a BIG way. @@michaeldarmody9919 a bit of a skewed stat to rely on. Many greats play well into their late 30's. Obviously their PPG avg drops as their production slows. Had Orr (Mike Bossy is another) played for 20 years his PPG average would've dropped significantly. That being said .... Amazing player without a doubt

Cant add much to what's been said here but what an amazing group of players on both teams! I marvel at our defence with Robinson, Orr, Lapointe, Potvin etc....like holy shit i watched Savard alot i don't think i seen him make a mistake defensively! Esposito never lost a faceoff that i could see! Bowman must have had a blast coaching this team. I agree with comments below that this is the most impressive group of players we've brought together!! Many comments wondering why Dryden wasn't on this team instead of Vachon or Cheevers. Maybe its because Dryden's previous track record against the Soviets SUCKED. In the 72 summit series he allowed 17 goals in just 3 games. In 75, the Montreal Canadiens would have crushed the Soviets had Dryden not allowed 3 goals on just 13 shots while Tretiak also allowed 3 goals but on 38 shots. Anyway, in 76 they had plenty of great Canadian goalies to chose from such as Villeneuve, Gilbert, Esposito (Parent was injured). Besides, Vachon played well un this game. I can see Dryden blowing a game like this.

BTW, this was the first or second tournament Russia debuted the diamonds National jersey....but these had the very cool variation of the name platein red with white letters. Also just in my opinion, these are the BEST Team Canada jersey However I do love my 2004 Black Canada jersey Brodeur jersey with the draw strings at the neck. I have 8 Martin Brodeur Canaa jersey, even the 1914 Falcons jersey they wore the opening game of the 2004 World Cup vs USA and that was the only time they were worn. I have 28 Soviet Union/Russian National and CSKA Red Army jersey and Russsian All Star jerseys. 14 Tretiak and the rest Pavel Bure, Kovalchuk, Sergei Mylnikov, Evegeny Beloshieken and Boris Mikhailov, The next Russian jerseys I am getting are two more Tretiak, 2 Popugaev (Devils Prospect) and on each of Fetisov, Kasatonov and "The Professor....the TRUE Russian Gretz Igor Larionov

Maybe it was the most stacked Team Canada in history(only not the best goalkeeper(IMO) like Dryden or Cheevers).Our team(USSR) was't stacked.No Kharlamov,Firsov,Davidov,Petrov,Mikhailov,Yakushev and others. But two teams had such a class.I like how our players controlled the puck,so calmly and so did Team Canada. And of course Team Canada won in Toronto where Team USSR(Russia) as I think never won Team Canada. And it's funny how some canadiens thought that Balderis was ukrainian(he was latvian).Ha-ha. And I want to know what Potvin and Alexandrov were talking about in 26:18 .I can guess that they used obscene language.And its interesting that in English you have only one such word,but we in Russia have 4! And i'm happy that Tretiak made an awesome save on Orr in 40:05 (Just could't resist to say that.)
