I watched this in 1981 and just now. What stands out for me is Potvin. He made alot of mistakes , poor penalties, caught up ice on a goal, caught flat-footed on another, fell at center ice for no reason. In 1976, he also took bad penalties and was caught out of position to many times. I had remembered him as more efficient than this.

This was a bizarre game. The Soviets didn't carry the play throughout as one would have expected them to by winning 8-1.They just had this uncanny way of scoring a goal pretty well every time they had the opportunity to do so and Canada only did one time.

The National team (CCCP) and their individual elite clubs customarily trounced the North American National teams (Canada and the USA) NHL clubs, NHL all star teams and teams made of an assortment of professional/amateur selects from 1954 to 1992 and the Soviets enjoyed a commanding 152 Wins 54 losses and 12 draws... I'm also not sure that the result would be *that* different. They lost 8-1. Team Canada still had Bossy, Gretzky, Lafleur, Trottier, etc. A big loss but one that translates from a 8-1 loss to a victory?
@September2004
@September2004 2 жыл бұрын
@@alangris365 Yes, but it was also believed that Tikhonov was playing softly to make the Canadians over-confident. Again, would it actually take 2 or 3 Canadian players (even someone as hot as Perreault) to turn an 8-1 loss to a win? That's a question you haven't answered. Also, you're forgetting that that team also had Potvin, Trottier, Potvin, Bourne and Gillies who also went on to win 4 Cups. By your logic, without Smith, the wouldn't have won any. And not to mention Lafleur and Robinson had won 5 Cups together up to that point.

The USSR truly had the best hockey team in the world back in 1980! This Canada Cup 1981 Final shows just how strong that Soviet Hockey team was, and how miraculous that USA victory was at Lake Placid on 22nd February 1980! Truly, that victory by a group of 20 US college players, was MIRACULOUS! What happened in this game was what was supposed to happen to the American college team on February 22, 1980! CCCP 8, USA 1. Then on Sunday February 24, 1980, CCCP 9, Sweden 2. (Medal podium at Lake Placid) CCCP (gold medal, 1980 Olympic Games), Sweden (silver), USA (bronze). That was what was supposed to happen.

Almost every time Canada’ best took on the CCCP, Canada won the tournament. 1972 (despite missing Canada’s two best players),1976, 1984, 1987. 1991. The sole exception was 1981. And Canada thumped them 7-3 in the round robin. 1974 doesn’t count as it did not include NHL players. So enjoy this ... it did not happen often. Remember, the CCCP played together all year for years on end. Canada was thrown together only 2 weeks prior to each tournament. Huge disadvantage, yet we still won. Imagine if our team Canada’s has been allowed to play together all year? Look what happens to the Russian team after the break up in 1991. No National team playing together all year. Goodbye Russia ... the USA is now our main opponent.

1976, seriously? In the USSR, this team was called "experimental", it did not have the two best attacking triplets. If you already remember 7: 3 in the round in 1981, then do not forget that in 1984 the Soviet team beat the Canadians 6: 3 in the round :) Moreover, all Canada Cups are only at Canadian venues with Canadian judges. This is the only way to assert your own greatness.

pegucka7 The reason the CCCP went with an experimental team is that they knew they could not beat a team Canada in 1976 with its best lineup. Remember, the 72 team was missing the best player in the world in Bobby Orr, not to mention Bobby Hull. Without our two best players we still won. So 1976 was a chance to save their pride and ice a team they could say was “experimental”. The CCCP has iced some very good teams, but those teams were great only because they played their best players together for years on end. It’s amazing that Canada could put together all those teams in short notice and still win - yet we do. Imagine Team Canada playing its best together all year? Good luck my friend. Cheers.

@@rondezeeuw2521 I must say that You have the talents of a soothsayer and a mystic. You can read the minds of the Soviet hockey establishment. Very impressive. Furthermore, they were only good because they played together for years according to you. The ability to skate, shoot and pass are of little importance.

Two goals were a little soft. The rest were from 12 feet or less. Only the margin of victory was in doubt. If Patrick Roy were ten years older he wouldn't have been able to help them that night.
