Had my 78 GL1000 for just over 20 years,rebuilt the carbs a couple of times. Concentrated on the lower half thinking my idle issues were jet related. It idles ok now but every now and again it sounds rough,you've gave me a couple of other things worth checking,the springs and tye smoothness of the piston in the cap. Really well presented instructions,thanks for that.

These carbs perform really well when set up right.

Good job, really sounds good. I remember Honda having a recall 40 years ago where we would replace the carb slides with new Teflon coated ones. They knew that there was a problem with them and did what they could to either cover it up or eliminate it.

I think they fixed it on the GL1100 in 1980. The 1100 carbs don't have this problem.

Nice knitcap! Working on a nearly pristine -79 K3, which is a little hard to fire up, and has a ‘cough’ and hesitation when accelerating. I am devouring YT content on GL1000s right now, and your technical content and tips are excellent! Thanks! Greetings feom a cold garage in Norway.

Sometimes my garage in South Carolina is a bit cold too. My sister in law lives in Oslo, she sent me the cap.

i like those gl 1000s. i don't own one , but they're a bike i'd consider. that bike looks and sounds good. thanks for showing us your repair process.

My 79 gl1000 did not idle correctly after rebuilding the carbs so I decided the problem was the rust in the tank so I pulled the tank did a whole flush and seal and really wish I would have watched this before doing all that 😂
@BobKramer516 ай бұрын
Rust in the tank will clog the filter and cause the bike to stop running. Will not cause poor idling

Great stuff Bob. It's good to know this job can be tackled without having to take the carbs off. And it looks pretty straightforward. What did you use to polish the inside of the tops?
@BobKramer51 Жыл бұрын
Fine Scotch Bright. Get scuffing pads from a body shop supply.

@@BobKramer51 I'd like to have seen how you got the tops off, or is it a really simple process?
@BobKramer5111 ай бұрын
Remove the intake runners, then the carbs will drop far enough to remove the dashpot caps. It's easier if you do one side at a time.

Thanks Bob. Do you find stretching the springs lasts, or do they lose their extra stretch over time compared to changing the springs for those from the GL1100 as you mentioned? Thanks

Hi Robert, very helpful video! How did you check the caps for leaks? I'm also working on a 1976 at the moment.
@BobKramer5111 ай бұрын
I put WD-40 inside the middle of the cap and applied low pressure compressed air. You will be checking for a clogged vent hole at the same time.

Sounds great. Just finished rebuilding carbs on my 81 GL1100, working on the sync. Thanks for the insight on those springs! Does that apply to the GL1100 as well, getting them to come back flush like that?
@BobKramer51 Жыл бұрын
The springs in the 1100 are much stronger than in the 1000. Yes, the piston should come up to near flush with the stock springs on the 1100.

1979 GL1000. I´m having issues with #2 carb from idle up to 2500/3000 RPM transition. This cylinder is almost dead in that range, then it runs perfectly. It also backfires through the exhaust. Spark plug looks perfect, clean & whitish coloured. Can´t find anything wrong. All clean, good vacuum. Any idea? thank you.
@BobKramer513 ай бұрын
Probably ignition related. Check ignition system carefully. Bad resistor cap or connection. Also, check compression. If it's low on that cylinder, you may have a bent valve. Also check your pilot jet and fuel mixture screw adjustment.
@rodrigopaz93433 ай бұрын
@@BobKramer51 compression is good and consistent in all 4. Caps are all OK. Ignition is a new Dyna kit with new Magna coils and timing is fine. Definitely carb related, no ignition/valve issues at all.
