She is all done.... Well, except the injection conversion, but will be the subject of another series. The engine rebuild and the other projects we listed from the very beginning are done though.

I like that you don't try to cover up things that go wrong. Much more realistic than otherwise.

Elin, I just watched a YT video last week where a rebuild shop owner was complaining about the size variation of freeze plugs he uses when rebuilding engines. He measured a number of plugs and the diameters were all over the place.

Wow, what a dramatic opening, the music really built the excitement. The tool building brought the episode to another level. Thanks for posting.

FYI, the best coating I’ve ever used on exhaust manifold is dry graphite spray. It doesn’t burn off and keeps it from rusting. Not on topic, but I thought I’d pass along. This was a great series. James

This is what I learned: Insert a disc-type plug with the domed side outwards. Make sure it rests squarely on the shoulder inside the hole. Tap it in the middle with a flat-headed punch to expand it. It must be a firm fit . You don't need a sealant, but if you use one: Permatex® Permanent Strength Red & Cup/Core Plug Sealant Retaining Compound, Just for general information

Elin I always thought that most core plugs are a concave disc that fits snugly into a register and then you have to punch the centre of the core plug to get it to flatten and spread into the register to seal itself. These are different?

Those are Welch Washers, they are fairly common, but not the only type. I would say that these 'bucket' type are equally common

Your lucky it wasn't the core-plug behind the flywheel 😆. Those large fans draw a lot of current, so it's not advisable to run them without the engine charging the battery. As it runs the battery down and you can't start it. And anyway, without the circulation from the pump, it merely cools the rad. Plus if you think about it... The old fan didn't run when the engine stopped😉

When running errands on a warm day (many stops & starts), to keep the fan going after the engine is off may help avoid fuel vaporizing in the line or percolating in the bowls.

Best not to put sealant on the core plugs assuming they are good quality. Water in the coolant will corrode the cast iron and steel, the rust will seal the joint in time. The best place for the fan temp sensor is in the adaptor block for the Injection system, where the extra fitting was already made next to the injection temp sensor fitting. The fan will cool the metal thermostat unit much better than it cools the radiator hose where the fan sensor is now.

The sensor should be on the return from the radiator.

With new valves and valve seats I would expect the valves to actually bed-in over the first few miles, so maybe the valve clearances would become a thou or two tighter?
@johnmoruzzi7236

Not worth redoing the valve clearances until the head gets re-torqued after a few hundred miles….. let everything new and old bed in nicely.

The current core plug supplier likely using different metal/specs. This happens with luxury brands also.

thanks Elin once again. Could you put a meter on the oxygen sensor and use it to set mixture ? Or will it not come into play until you do the fuel injection conversion ? John in Manitoba.

Makes no sense to wire the fan to run when the engine is off… because the water pump doesnt circulate so you are only cooling the rad. If you install an electric water pump like a davies craig + controller, the pump and fan will run a few minutes after engine shutdown to continue to cool the engine.

I enjoy your videos, but this one yeah you should have done a paint touch up, I would have questioned that if I was a customer as the engine looks fantastic otherwise.
