Walter Payton was the greatest all around football player of all time. Was so blessed to have met him in his rookie season. A sweet and humble man taken too early from us.

not my first, but got to go. my dad had season tickets & for some reason brought me that week. i was 15. all i remember was the first play being a long one. thought it was to the other side as shown in the video. the only other thing i remember was beginning the drive home, going by soldier field and the announcement coming over the radio that he set the record. strictly by chance i was there, but a cool fun fact when i tell people i'm from chicago & "guess what game i was at?"

What makes Payton's accomplishment great is who he did it against. Those Vikings defenses with a D line of Alan Page, Carl Eller, and Jim Marshall were great.

Not really. By the mid 70's the feared Purple People Eaters best days had long since passed. The Vikings defense regularly gave up globs of yards in the ground . That was a well known fact around the league. Earlier in the season Wayne Morris gained close to 200 yards. In 1976,both 49ner RBs gained over 150 yards. Let's also not forget the record setting ground game set against them in the SB's. So,no. A good record non the less by Payton,but at the time.The Vikings defense sucked.

Funny how the Bears lost a playoff spot getting Payton the record. A field goal instead of a fourth down run improves the tiebreaker; I always laugh when records take precedence winning.

@Jiltedin20073 жыл бұрын
The Bears needed a win at New Jersey(Giants) on the Final Sunday of 1977 to qualify for the Playoffs. They won this home game anyway. What was it you were referring to about losing out on?
@atulthakker35453 жыл бұрын
I’m getting old, but the Bears and Vikings both finished 9-5 in 1977, with the Vikings as the division winner due to winning in Minnesota 22-16 in OT, but losing in Chicago 10-7. Back in the day, the point differential was the first tiebreaker in a split season series, so Bud Grant calling for a fake field giving the Vikings a 6 point victory won the division for them. The Bears ran Payton on 4th down in Chicago against the Vikings setting the single game rushing record, but eschewing a field goal that would have given them a 13-7 lead. I don’t know who had a better division or conference record, but Bud Grant made a prescient decision that won the division for the Vikings. I had forgotten that the Bears got in as a wildcard, but my point was playing for records is fun, but playing to win is why we play.
@johnjmartin51563 жыл бұрын
@@Jiltedin2007 Atul is referring to the 4th down play at 15:52 where they could have kicked the field goal and eventually would have won by a score of 13-7 instead of 10-7, thereby improving their chances in the tiebreaker consideration. The play also gave Payton the single game rushing record. However, this "after-the-fact" reasoning is flawed because the Bears have no idea at that time of the play what the final score is going to be, and the argument can easily be made that going for 7 points here by giving it to Payton on a 4th-and-goal is giving precedence to winning.
