I saved this video so that I could savour it in the tranquillity of my garden with a cool beer. A beautiful car, still undervalued today. Citroën hydraulics powered the DIRAVI self-centering steering, clutch, brakes, headlamps and seat adjustment ! This car is beautifully presented. A real gem ! Thanks for finding it, Lou.

My favourite european brand, in th Khamsin there is not only the line but the luxurious interior, the fabulous V8, and all the hydropneumatic quirks , very very special car ! Thanks for the video. The "american sound" comes from the architecture , Crossplane V8, like amis, but when you rev it above 4000 , it's very different from ami v8, more metallic more italian, a truly fabulous sound and very special. Some food for thought Citroen bought Maserati for the Citroen SM V6, and Alfieri chief engineer at Maserati used some parts from Citroen that fitted well to his over engineered way of thinking. The suspension are not hydraulic but the seats and the headlamp opening are (crazy) and if the pressure system comes from Citroen, the actuator are from BOSCH which were first used in ... the Mercedes 600. So you have in this car the very best of mechanic (DOHC Maserati V8motor) and hydraulic technology (Citroen +Bosch) in this car.

I love this car Lou. Thanks to Joe for showing us just how beautiful and special this car was. I own a 1980 TVR Tasmin show car, which has so many design cues taken from this car. You should look it up. Does the ‘Roots’ logo on Joe’s shirt mean the British Roots company?

Nice car! I really like the little grille n the way the hood opens. The front end has cool shape to it. It's a pretty burgundy. That glass in the rear is something I haven't seen before. I didn't know that could be done. Seems like it would shatter easily but it's still intact so it must be stronger than I'd have thought. I can see why the hype, very cool to get to see in. Excellent vid, I had fun. Thanks

Thanks Lou, this is a beautiful example of a de-federalized Khamsin. I owned one of these between about 1980-92, and it was the best GT car I ever had. It was comfortable, reliable and the only real money I spent on it was to remove the clunky front and rear US bumpers, move the tail lights back up onto the glass panel (the NHTSA didn't allow mounting the tail lights on a transparent panel, so Maserati mounted them on the rear valence below the glass,) and replace the bumpers with euro-spec units like this has. I'm betting one of Joe's other Gandini cars is a Lamborghini Espada, which shared the concept of a glass rear panel, and was similarly received by the authorities.

Thank you for the long shot on 1:03 to 1:10. There you can say what Gandini mean as he said that there was one thing he wish to change on the Khamsin: He must adapted his sketch, his design for fixed wheelbase and therefor he pointed out that the Khamsin ist too short in the back. On your video you can see it. This design ist marvelous, outstanding, but from the standpoint of the creator now (proof it) we can understand his point of view!

Thank you Lou for pointing out "Is this the choke?" It´s no coincidence, that Maserati put this knob there in the shadow. Imagine 1977 and they produced the car until 1983 only with carburetors.. No money for adapt a injection system. It´s a shame. Look at the Quattroporte Royale III. The last ones from 1990 were even no injection V8 cars. And those cars hadn´t much mileage to go because of rich owners. Imagine the constant problems after a few years with starting those big engines in the garages.... Uhhhh, outch ;.-)

The back is plexiglass. Now if you look at a 67 one of one Jaguar piranha it has the same kind of design which is upper Tony design but the Jaguar window goes down and it's hidden behind some louvers the tail lights on a Jaguar are clear and orange and yellow their way ahead of time the hatchback on this Maserati is almost the same as a piranha they copy Toyota from back in the early 70s
