Being the golf nerd I am. Been watching from the '69 Masters to here. It has been really interesting to see the subtle changes each year that CBS makes with their coverage. Also the equipment/apparel changes the players make year to year.
No one knew that later in the summer, Watson and Nicklaus would have another duel, the epic “Duel in the Sun” at Turnburry. What a year!

Announcers - 1977 11 & 12: Pat Summerall 13: Jack Whitaker 14: Ken Venturi 15: Ben Wright 16: Jim Thacker 17: Frank Glieber 18: Vin Scully ALSO -- You may happen to notice the quirky audio. This was the byproduct of a nationwide coax cable/microwave relay system used by CBS-ABC-NBC to transmit their programming across the country since the 1950s. In early 1978, improvements were introduced which gave the audio a more natural quality. By the 1980s, the networks were transmitting their programs nationwide with satellites. Even with the quirky audio, Frank Glieber's call of Tom Watson's birdie on 17 is the most beautiful thing you'll ever hear.

You have to be kidding!!!! Jack Nicklaus, in major championships has won 18 times, finished runner up 19 times, and has 56 top 5 finishes. Tom Watson pales into insignificance compared to that. Even Tiger’s incredible record in majors can’t compare to Jack’s.

Everyone else had scores of 280, 282 , and higher. Watson and Nicklaus were out there in front with a decent lead over the field. … Why couldn't Nicklaus have gone up against Molinari, Rocco Mediate, Chris DiMarco and Bob May, etc. .. … Nicklaus would have won 27 Majors. … Look Tiger Woods Opponents. Look at what Tom Watson did. That's how you do it.
@MrAJR765 жыл бұрын
Oh come on. When Jack & Tom we’re playing there were only about a dozen players in the field each time who were capable of winning. That’s why Player, Trevino etc were able to win so many majors and build their reputations. Woods had to beat much deeper, stronger fields where about fifty guys were capable of winning at the start of the week. It’s what makes Woods’ achievements so incredible.
@dlamiss4 жыл бұрын
@Bogeyssuk You can only beat your opponents but there are many more players capable of winning majors than there were 40 years ago. For instance no British player won a major for 60 successive championships after the 1970 us open
@nicholasschroeder36782 жыл бұрын
@@MrAJR76 But there was not one player of note who ever game him a fight in a major. Not one. He had some one offs that he beat in tight matches--Bob May and Rocco Mediate--and one who beat him--YE Yang. That's about it. Not one great player that stepped up. I personally think that the personalities of Jack's day were tougher and more competitive. They weren't coddled and weren't collecting much for finishing 20th. Impossible to know, but if May, Mediate, and Yang could push Tiger to the wall, why couldn't anyone else?
