More of these please!! Great memories of highlights of these on late night TV in Ireland back in the day. The 90's ones were great too - watching Payne and Freddie go toe to toe was great viewing.

Fantastic upload, great players from a great time in the game, 42 majors in this fourball. Many thanks this really is a treat.

This is what the current pga tour is about, memories from 1980’s. 😊😊😊

Brings back great memories. My dad used to have golf on the TV all the time when I was a kid, so I remember all of these guys, especially Nicklaus. They're all great, but Jack was the greatest of them all.

Quality legends golf. The awe inspiring desert terrain completes the spectacle. Re picture quality would love the technological rescrub to bring these epics to clearer vision. Surely they are historic documents never to be repeated
@radar0412Ай бұрын
This was an amazing event. I'm glad I stumbled upon it because I wasn't a golfer in 83 and wouldn't have tuned in. Every One of those legends in this competition would remind us at one point why they were the best who ever played the game.

We're watching a 43-year-old Jack Nicklaus using persimmon wood clubs outdriving everyone, even Tom Watson, who is 10 years his junior, and topping 300 yards on many shots. That's why he's the greatest ever. If he were 30-years-old today in 2024 using today's equipment, he'd be dominating world golf. No way to prove it, but I don't see how anyone couldn't conclude it.
@kbc163Ай бұрын
He would be ridiculously dominant and could also be moonlighting in long drive competitions like Bryson.
@A-FrameWedgeАй бұрын
And Tom Watson was 28th in driving distance on Pga Tour in 1987, which is a far back as those stats go.

And to think they played for chump change.
@A-FrameWedge10 күн бұрын
@@theseeker1237 But you can look at just about any sport from Jack’s era, and compared to what they make today, it is a small fraction even given for inflation. And also back then, only the top 60 money leaders were exempt for the next year, all others had to back to qualifying school.
@kbc163Ай бұрын
The conditions that first day must have been really tough, especially the wind. Four of the best golfers ever and they were hitting shots into the cactus and gravel like me. 😃

Who’s here for Gary Player shenanigans???
@budg.6094Ай бұрын
I am. Surprised to see his tee shot seems to he in the light rough at the most. I didn’t seem him bend over or even take a practice swing I guess he could have done something on his backswing. Watson did seem adamant about it. Going to have to look into it some more.

This is the edited broadcast footage, so obviously the players had been at their balls for a little while beforehand. They’re not shown when they’re first walking up to their balls. That’s when Player moved the leaf, which may - or may not - have been a loose impediment (ie. was rooted in the ground, or loose). You’re not going to see anything in this footage. Either way, the post-game discussion between them was firm but polite, and no lasting animosity resulted from it.

Except for Arnie all of them were probably looking for a payday. Nicklaus said when he won the 1986 Masters that he needed the money. Today’s players wouldn’t be bothered to play an event like this. These were really fun events back in the day.

On the 16th hole, Watson accused Player of taking a leaf off his line when playing a chip. It started a feud between the two. And Watson using a 5 iron on a 160 yard shot, tells you it was at least a 2 club wind.
@AlexabiscuitbogieАй бұрын
Is this the one where Watson accused Player of cheating?

@@owenburnett2718 At what point in the video ?
@owenburnett2718Ай бұрын
The confrontation is not in the video, but this is definitely the Skins Game where it occurred. The alleged cheating by Player occurred on the 16th, but his conduct isn’t in the video.

I'm looking for the skins game, the year Trevino had a hole in one; can't remember the year or where they played
@gripitandripitАй бұрын
Chat GPT - “Lee Trevino famously made a hole-in-one during the 1987 Skins Game. It happened on the par-3 17th hole at PGA West’s Stadium Course in La Quinta, California. His ace earned him $175,000, making it one of the most memorable moments in the history of the Skins Game.”

@A-FrameWedgeАй бұрын
In today's money it is the equivalent of almost $1.2 million.
@dfunckt27 күн бұрын
This is why I think golf has lost it's charm. $360 for 18 holes is more than triple the annual wages of a typical middle-class job. Golfers are too greedy, like all sports today.
@turdferguson2839Ай бұрын
Gary player cheated on the 16th and Watson called him out after the match, Arnold Palmer shouldve won the event.
@chgibbons1Ай бұрын
Jack was only 3 feet away to tie Watson on 16 for par. Not sure Player making bogey would have mattered
@thomastrain7311Күн бұрын
From what I can gather, I heard Gary say "Arnold leave your ball". By rule, that's a penalty. And , if you are asked to leave your ball and do, it's also a penalty on you. This is to not give another player a backstop and be more aggressive without fear of running out past the hole.

I know. My great, great grand father used to make 15 cents an hour and he was okay with that. How can anyone live on 15 cents an hour? He couldn't afford one chocolate bar a day on that wage.
