Mating the dash back into the car. Hopefully this video should help identify all the components behind the dash so you can either remove the dash, or reinstall it. (on a 1977 model )

Don't forget the multiple ground wires to frame behind and up above the wiper motor. Also don't forget that there is a tiny leather gasket between the oil gauge and the oil line. If you forget this gasket you will have a oil leak under your dash. (Moss part #435-516 Leather washer for oil gauge) If you loosen (3 big bolts at the mid front 9/16 and 3 smaller 1/2 at the base mounted to the fire wall) and lower lower/swing downward the steering column it make it easier to install the shroud/cover over the turn and wiper assembly. Great progress on you beautiful car.

Good catch on the leather gasket. thanks for sharing that. I think I will do a follow up video next week to cover that. I actually covered the extra ground wire in an earlier video. Thanks again for all your contributions

Alex, I’ve just replaced my dash. It was quite a project but I got the whole dash unit so I couldn’t not do it. If you saw the old one I’m sure you’d agree! My questions are on the wood panel: 1.) Is it in fact wood? You may have already answered that but please remind me. The Moss catalogue refers to wood on MGB’s up to but not including the final generation. 2.) If I were to install the “wood” dash and later wanted to remove it, would I ruin the dashboard? Thanks PS so now that you’ve done the MGB what’s next?

The wood kit was by BNI Pretty good quality and affordable. It is fake wood, but looks good. I did not record that project but did a recap with photos kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZCZaGWvibyijdEsi=jTGMbB_3toP8ZBhb

I think you can probably remove it without damaging the dash if you changed your mind. The adhesive is pretty good though. You might have some clean up after.

I have a 1979 vw super beetle I have been working on too. And a few other projects possible in the distance. Thing is, with classic cars, you always have some tinkering to do. I plan on adding a lowering kit and replacing the bushings under the MGB. And I will need to replace the transmission rear seal. So there is a lot more to work on. I have even done some videos on the MGB that require me to redo things on the car. So I imagine I will continue to record more going forward

I wished you'd talked about the wood. It looks great.

Funny you should mention in your other comment about making a custom veneer dash. My wife and I were on the fence about which way to go. But the fake wood kit we found was of good quality, and was cheap enough to try first. If it failed, I was prepared to go complete custom. On a side note, the 60s dashes were far less complicated. I would have probably just made a custom dash without a second thought if mine was of that era.

I looked at the BI kit for 1971 and 1972 and don't think it would look as good as your 1977 dash. It really adds a lot.

Great work. I have a question. When taking off the dash It was very hard to get to the six bolts at the top of the dash. I had to remove some of the gages. I would like to put the gages back in like you did but I am worried about getting to the six bolts at the top of the dash.

It was a bit tricky. You can get three on the glove box side by not installing the box, and leaving the heater vent for last. The two on the end opposite side are pretty accessible. That last one though.... tricky I cannot remember I think I removed the oil pressure gauge

Sorry, me again. Also there are 2 wires, purple/pink and purple/green. I can't find where they go either.

If memory serves... The dash light had purple wires. Rule of thumb is that purple wires are always hot. Not controlled by ignition.

Hello again Alex. I am finally putting my dash back in and I was just wondering. I have an extra 3 prong connector on my main harness. It has a double red/green in 1, double brown in 2 and a blue in 3. I don't have a matching connector on the dash harness. Did you have this same problem? I can't find a connector for it.

Hey alex. I found this connection. It is the headlight switch. Sorry for that.

The headlight switch on the steering column has a three prong connector... That might be it, I chose to mount that switch in the upper left of the dash instead of the column

Thanks for the video! I'd like to know what those green wires with the female bullet connectors near the diodes go to. They were just hanging not connected. They were behind those black connectors with the green wires.
@AlexPlatacis
@AlexPlatacis Жыл бұрын
They all connect together. There are a few places where you will see bunches of similar wires connected together in bundles. The black ones are all grounds. Idk what the green ones go to, I will add a link to the wiring diagram later.

@@AlexPlatacis I was referring to an unconnected green wire with a male bullet end on it. It can be seen in the background at 1:42. The reason I ask is because my 77 has the same wire and I can't determine what it goes to. I suspect it may have gone to a service interval counter which may have been removed when the prior owner removed the emission system.

@@richardsimon5945 yeah... I just connected those together after the vid. My guess is that the harness was intended to work on a few slightly different models. (US vs UK) etc. I will look it up though
