@@UncleDoug When I was in my late teens and going to community College I worked anodizing small aluminum parts. That was 48 years ago but I still remember how. The part was made the anode and immersed in a cold dilute solution of sulfuric acid that was in a lead lined tank. The lead liner was made the cathode. A specific amount of direct current was applied for a specific amount of time to make a certain thickness of anodized aluminum. There were tables we followed but we would also measure the thickness with a micrometer. The result is a layer of aluminum oxide that's very hard and corrosion resistant.

The history of Morley was illuminating! To have the current owners of the brand choose you to restore this effects pedal is a no-brained. There are other shops/individuals who could do the work, but you are who I would trust, especially after discovering the repairs someone else tried. Your brain works in a way that won’t let you do things that are not the most correct way. Your brain also has the ability to solve problems and overcome obstacles. I had my headphones on and the dry/ wet stereo signal was dramatic. I panned from left to right to prove the true stereo separation. When panned to the middle, the effect was a little hard to distinguish, but isolating the wet channel, proved the effect. I can only imagine what it sounds like in a room with two amps, one on each side of you! The computer program for seeing the waveform, solidly puts you in the 21st. century. Who says you can’t teach an old dog a new trick! Your compassion for the cats is fantastic! We have cats that have come to our home on their own and we do similar things to provide a loving, safe place to live a good life. Love from NW Colorado. Thanxz

Now that this video is out I just wanted to stress to any DIY'ers out there how incredibly FRAGILE the oil coated disc is. I venture to guess that it is some kind of coated copper, it is so soft that it can easily bent with a push of the finger. Once it is bent or scratched basically the unit is toast and will make a thumping or clicking sound. It is impossible to get the disc flat again. I also noticed that one of the rubber wipers had a clipped corner, this was done as a repair is to reduce the surface coverage of the wiper to lessen the residual clicking or thumping echo byproduct from the rotating disc. Thanks for another awesome video Uncle Doug!!!

Hi Uncle Doug, in the 80's to late 90's I worked as a tech in the photocopier industry and this anodized aluminum disc made me think of the 'heart' of the copier which is a cylinder, usually aluminum with a light sensitive and high voltage electrically sensitive coating. Earlier, that coating was selenium, later cadmium and later still what the manufacturers mysteriously called "organic." In the end, it's still a piece of aluminum with a coating on it. Companies that create these cylinders (colloquially called 'drums'), could probably coat the disc or discs or anodize them. 'Love your work in restoring amps and parts like this one, that you care so much for these great dogs and cats, your sense of humour and I'm in awe of your ability to find parts, tubes & caps for all these projects. Congratulations and thanks.

Back in the 80's I found a Fender oil can reverb in a dumpster. It had not rained on it, so I scavenged it and took it home. It looked like a tiny Fender amp, about 10 X 10 X 8. Being in a band at the time, I knew being Fender meant something musical, so I opened it up and could not for the life of me could I figure out what kind of voodoo I was beholding. It didn't do anything but rotate, so it found a home in a long ago perished shed. I kinda wish I had it now, after watching this video I probably could have fixed it. Goodness, what a daunting challenge! I remember that pedal from my youth. It was the mechanical aspect coupled with the electronics that takes me back to that memory. I have never owned one of these. In fact, this is the first stereo demonstration I've heard. This episode was quite a departure from an amp repair. The engineering skill required to restore this to operating condition was a dizzying adventure. I am impressed with the approach, and especially the adaptation to effect repair of the oil can's tendency to leak. All was genius in execution. I am grateful for your unselfish sharing of the clever manner you configured this restoral. Thanks again dear uncle. Great video Uncle Doug! Using photoelectric instead of pots was a big selling point for Morley pedals, no noise. One of the most popular pedals from that era was the wah fuzz, all their pedals had the foot controller, their slogan was " Morley Men do it with their feet"

In all my years fixing electronic stuff, I've never seen anything like this. You had me puzzled when you said "oil can." (Whats he talking about?) And sure enough there is oil in a can. Then you said record , replay and erase to create delay. Using bits of black bent rubber? Never! I've only ever known magnetic echo. Then you say electro static!!! Mind is blown... Sure enough you got it working, hats off to Doug!

Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. When I was a teenager, back in the seventies, I purchased a Morley Power Wah Boost. Being an electronics student at the time, I had to open it up and check it out. I discovered the photo-electric circuit and was blown away by the innovative design. That was by far the best volume, boost and wah pedal I have ever had! Everyone told me I should use a Cry-Baby, but I liked this so much more. Sadly, it was lost in one of my numerous moves. Morley was an amazing company and I would love to see them get back in the game! Your restoration was great and it sounds just like the units that I remember from the time.

Wow, that sounds amazing in stereo!! I always though the oil was the medium for recording, and the aluminum plate was just a carrier mechanism for the oil. And that the oil was nasty smelling because of the added chemicals necessary to store a magnetic charge for the signal. I really enjoyed seeing all of the inner workings of this baby, thanks Uncle Doug! Hi Jack, Ollie, and KC! 😸 (if that box was in my house, Sheldon would be in it in a heartbeat)

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, GF. Fresh UC oil has little or no smell, but after 40+ years sealed in a damp, corroded can, it does develop a very unpleasant scent......to say the least.
@hubbsllc3 жыл бұрын
@@UncleDoug Maybe the wrong oil had been used previously - vegetable??
@hubbsllc3 жыл бұрын
I thought the oil was the actual medium too but apparently no - it's the anodization or oxidation layer on the aluminum disc. I don't know anything about anodization but absolutely naked aluminum forms a very hard oxide that's a good insulator (which is why it must be used only with great care in mains wiring and is no longer allowed to be used in the walls of homes). Whatever that extremely thin layer is, it passes light and that's why it has a slightly iridescent appearance (from reflected wave interference). But that layer is what's actually carrying the signal around from the write head to the read head in the form of a varying electric charge - the oil is just to keep the heads from wearing down the disc's charge-carrying layer. I'd be interested to know just how high voltage a signal is being applied to the write head and what's being fed to the erase head. Also interested to know if there's a DC bias.

Just a tip on gripping a threaded rod or shaft to stop it rotating, lock a nut against another nut on that shaft. You can then use a spanner on one of the nuts to hold the shaft - Hopefully that makes sense?

Great video. I'm in the process of working on one that I've had for over 40 years and hasn't worked or had oil for about 35. I was kind of disappointed that you didn't show the oil being added or how it's done. Mine had a hole drilled in the top of the can, a screw put into the hole and the head of the screw soIdered over. I made a new hole and when the oil comes in I'll just plug the hole afterwards. You can get a lot more info if you search for telrayoilcanaddicts or maybe you're already there...
@UncleDoug3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Joe. When the front cover is off the can you simply pour in enough oil to cover the bottom 1/8" to 1/4" of the spinning disc. I could have sworn that this was discussed in the video.

I use this exact pedal, Les Paul --> Overdrive --> Oil Can --> Vibro Champ and it sounds amazing, it's like having a very expressive reverb tone and if you push hard it will go into echo saturation. Mine also came with the grey silicone sealant around the hole through the can lid, maybe coincidence, maybe factory? It also has a silicone bead on every internal edge/seal. I removed the silicone and hope it doesn't tip over. I got the oil from a guy on ebay. Thanks UD. My unit is pristine condition but I wanted to change the oil, and plan to do oil changes every once in a while. Also my can is shiny on the outside.

Nice video Uncle Doug. A vintage Morley EVO1, that's too much man. Sounds cool it does. It's nice to see your DAW waveform display; we can see as well as hear, that you have a lot of dynamic range in your playing, instead of being all compressed. I like how Morley used photoresistors in the volume circuit- no pot noise ever! I like the effect of electromechanical delay units; makes a for a pleasant and musical sound. Cheers!
