Jack & I were flattered recently when the Morley company asked us to restore one of their 1977 Echo-Delay Pedals, which uses a Tel-Ray-style oil can unit to produce some really incredible effects. This video documents the entire procedure including disassembly, cleaning, reassembly and repair.....with with a detailed discussion of design and operating theory, history, and an audio demonstration of the echo-delay effect in stereo.
In addition we will be visited by Ollie, Jack, and KC at various times during the video to break up the monotony ;)

@@UncleDoug When I was in my late teens and going to community College I worked anodizing small aluminum parts. That was 48 years ago but I still remember how. The part was made the anode and immersed in a cold dilute solution of sulfuric acid that was in a lead lined tank. The lead liner was made the cathode. A specific amount of direct current was applied for a specific amount of time to make a certain thickness of anodized aluminum. There were tables we followed but we would also measure the thickness with a micrometer. The result is a layer of aluminum oxide that's very hard and corrosion resistant.

The history of Morley was illuminating! To have the current owners of the brand choose you to restore this effects pedal is a no-brained. There are other shops/individuals who could do the work, but you are who I would trust, especially after discovering the repairs someone else tried. Your brain works in a way that won’t let you do things that are not the most correct way. Your brain also has the ability to solve problems and overcome obstacles. I had my headphones on and the dry/ wet stereo signal was dramatic. I panned from left to right to prove the true stereo separation. When panned to the middle, the effect was a little hard to distinguish, but isolating the wet channel, proved the effect. I can only imagine what it sounds like in a room with two amps, one on each side of you! The computer program for seeing the waveform, solidly puts you in the 21st. century. Who says you can’t teach an old dog a new trick! Your compassion for the cats is fantastic! We have cats that have come to our home on their own and we do similar things to provide a loving, safe place to live a good life. Love from NW Colorado. Thanxz

Uncle Doug you have explained a mystery that has lived with me for decades.. In 1975 as a young professional guitarist, I was employed to demonstrate the full range of Morley pedals for Australian distributor.. They gave me the full range for two weeks prior to come up with some usable musical demonstrations. It was our first musical trade show .... This pedal was the hit of the show!! It stunned the dealers and guitarist of the day I had two Fender amps on either side of the stage sending the guitar audio delay signal across the stage !! They took orders for Morley units solidly across the weekend of the show!! Thank you greatly.. Keep well to all at kitty heaven!

Goodness, what a daunting challenge! I remember that pedal from my youth. It was the mechanical aspect coupled with the electronics that takes me back to that memory. I have never owned one of these. In fact, this is the first stereo demonstration I've heard. This episode was quite a departure from an amp repair. The engineering skill required to restore this to operating condition was a dizzying adventure. I am impressed with the approach, and especially the adaptation to effect repair of the oil can's tendency to leak. All was genius in execution. I am grateful for your unselfish sharing of the clever manner you configured this restoral. Thanks again dear uncle. She looks healthy and content and possibly a little spoiled now, but it's well deserved and who cares if she has a catnip and tuna habit? I am a firm believer that animals know when they have been rescued and they never forget it. I have a couple of rescues and they are the most loyal and well-behaved dogs I have ever had. Back in the 80's I found a Fender oil can reverb in a dumpster. It had not rained on it, so I scavenged it and took it home. It looked like a tiny Fender amp, about 10 X 10 X 8. Being in a band at the time, I knew being Fender meant something musical, so I opened it up and could not for the life of me could I figure out what kind of voodoo I was beholding. It didn't do anything but rotate, so it found a home in a long ago perished shed. I kinda wish I had it now, after watching this video I probably could have fixed it. Hi Uncle Doug, in the 80's to late 90's I worked as a tech in the photocopier industry and this anodized aluminum disc made me think of the 'heart' of the copier which is a cylinder, usually aluminum with a light sensitive and high voltage electrically sensitive coating. Earlier, that coating was selenium, later cadmium and later still what the manufacturers mysteriously called "organic." In the end, it's still a piece of aluminum with a coating on it. Companies that create these cylinders (colloquially called 'drums'), could probably coat the disc or discs or anodize them. 'Love your work in restoring amps and parts like this one, that you care so much for these great dogs and cats, your sense of humour and I'm in awe of your ability to find parts, tubes & caps for all these projects. Congratulations and thanks.

What a cool piece of history and a wonderful repair from the undisputed king of vintage restoration. I have a couple old early 70s Morley pedals. A Boost power wah, and a Pan pedal. Purchased new in 75 and barely used. They still work as new. Bought when I was trying to copy the guitarist of the times. I had no idea what they used in my limited exposure.

Thank you for the detailed explanation of the workings of the system. For the first 40 minutes I was about to die from curiosity and scratching my head about how it's supposed to work. And I still don't understand how a piece of rubber writes musical signal electrically for it to read. This whole unit is brilliant engineering and full madness. Who comes up with stuff like this? It sounds and looks very cool. Your comments always crack me, nice to see the cats doing ok. I miss Rusty. My dogs are also buried at our summer cabin's front yard, behind the small potato soil and bushes.

Hello Uncle Doug & Family, A most excellent restoration. Glad your all doing well. The Polar Vortex reached into Mexico, Central Texas had it rough. Our power was out for 7 day's, after 3 day's of freezing rain. Limbs, big one's, and Tree's, some large, took the power lines down. We have a wood stove and plenty of wood, did just fine, heat, coffee and food. Back to the Morley, a rather complex unit, not to mention, video. Another quality and thought out repair, attention to details. My number 1 favorite channel of all YT. Wishing you all the best and every Happiness, Cass.

Great job once again! I recall pulling my hair out, back in the day, working on a Morley fuzz/wah pedal that used the same photo-resistor control..until I realized linearity of the sweep just wasn't possible..closer to an on/off effect than a gradual change..it was like it was designed by the minds of Rube Goldberg and Victor Frankenstein. Now that this video is out I just wanted to stress to any DIY'ers out there how incredibly FRAGILE the oil coated disc is. I venture to guess that it is some kind of coated copper, it is so soft that it can easily bent with a push of the finger. Once it is bent or scratched basically the unit is toast and will make a thumping or clicking sound. It is impossible to get the disc flat again. I also noticed that one of the rubber wipers had a clipped corner, this was done as a repair is to reduce the surface coverage of the wiper to lessen the residual clicking or thumping echo byproduct from the rotating disc. Thanks for another awesome video Uncle Doug!!!

Great Video! I used a Morley Echo/Volume pedal in 1978-1980 then sold it to a pawn shop in Rockville, M.D. Needed cash badly at the time. I could hear the whoosh of the disc in the audio signal quite loud at high amplifier volume. Only went to 330 milliseconds max delay time. Only other choice at the time were an Echoplex or MXR Analog Delay. Still use a Morley Wah/Volume Pedal in my current rig. Thanks Doug, Morley Men Do It With Their Feet!

I got one on Ebay for $50 back in '05. Had some fantastic potential, but also some obvious problems. After watching this wonderfully detailed video, I know for sure that I would've only made things much worse, if I started to dismantle the pedal. I didn't like the looks of the belt/rubber wheel assembly & sadly decided that it was best that I look no further, and pass it on to the next buyer. Hopefully someone has done it justice like you have here. Restorations can be so much more difficult sometimes, than just making something by scratch. Great job Doug!

Wow! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. When I was a teenager, back in the seventies, I purchased a Morley Power Wah Boost. Being an electronics student at the time, I had to open it up and check it out. I discovered the photo-electric circuit and was blown away by the innovative design. That was by far the best volume, boost and wah pedal I have ever had! Everyone told me I should use a Cry-Baby, but I liked this so much more. Sadly, it was lost in one of my numerous moves. Morley was an amazing company and I would love to see them get back in the game! Your restoration was great and it sounds just like the units that I remember from the time.
