Not sure what you expected from A late 70s Malaise 440. It’s actually dead on in specs with what it was rated at new. About 195 HP and 310 lb ft torque.
@selfdo Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised it can still do even that. Those "malaise era" specs aren't necessarily what the engine is capable of; only what's reported to "comply" with expected horsepower ratings that the Federal Government and the insurance lobby wanted...DE-BALLED Detroit iron!

@jackanapes6676 Жыл бұрын
I had a 74 Imperial. I believe that in 75 they might have started with catalytic converters by then, also I believe that the 75 was available with a higher gear ratio available where I believe the 74 only had one option and I believe that was a 3 23 ratio. That 74 did OK, still ran the leaded gasoline, had the tank on the farm for leaded, and the car seemed to have decent power. The car was terrible on gas though, I figured the car at about 8 miles per gallon.
@GoodOlRoll Жыл бұрын
@@jackanapes6676 the 2.72 was standard on the 75 but the 3.23 was optional.

I change the intake to a spread bore 4 bbl intake Carter Thermaquad 4 bbl card and the spark control computer and connected a Accel cd ignition box with the Accel super coil to the computer. install Busch platinum +4 spark plugs and Accel 9.4mm wires.

A stock 73 74 chrysler 440 was rated at 225 horse and 345 torque so 45 years later on a dyno in a decent tune around 185 190 horse and maybe around 300 torque at the rear wheels... I'm sure I'm not far off
@georgepetrillo731610 ай бұрын
Interesting to think that a 318 2bbl engine was rated at 230 hp and 330 ftlbs of torque in 1968.
@johneckert13659 ай бұрын
Don't forget, that they used "gross" hp ratings until 72 or 73 and it switched to "net" hp. I believe a Lean Burn 440 was rated at 210 net hp.

@mypronouniswtf5559 Жыл бұрын
Lean Burn was the first car computer..was added for vehicle emissions..They didnt want to but had to,like today going electric dystopian forces at works aka government. I always replaced it with a points distributor or electronic ignition vacuum advance and ecu..You have to change the smog carburetor then you get huge power gains!! Its like a different engine,you have to set them differently too,not to the lean burn specs that most do and they ensure the car is slow.
@johneckert13659 ай бұрын
@@mypronouniswtf5559right on 👍 Use conventional Chrysler Electronic Ignition, and richen up that Thermoquad n it'll gain about 40hp.

I think sounds like it's got a stuck valve or that valve or something. I can clearly hear even on the video it's not running right. Especially if that's either the 351 400 or 460 those are smooth engines

That and the engine wasn't really making peak RPM. Sounded like it topped out a 4800rpm instead of 5000-5400rpm. These Mopars are capable of achieving low 5000s on the tachs bone-stock. Just because the carb is screaming doesn't mean the engine will explode. Now if the guy was trying to achieve anything above 5400rpm, then you'd have to worry about the engine. I know some of these stock C-body smog era cars have crummy shift governers so they have super low rpm shift points, but you're better off leaving the car in 2nd gear to achieve max rpm in a steady curve
