April 7, 1977: The same day as the very first Toronto Blue Jays game. What a doubleheader!

One of my favorite goalies Wayne Thomas in goal for the Leafs (pre Palmateer). Great mask. During the one year sabbatical of Ken Dryden, Thomas shared the Montreal net with Bunny Larocque and Michel Plasse. They would all go on to be established, if not star, NHL goaltenders. Herron would also go on to play for the Canadiens.

And when Dryden came back a year later, Thomas spent the entire 1974-75 season with the Canadiens without seeing a second of action, although I think he dressed as the backup a few times.

what a great quality post of this game. - thanks watched it all. Great camera shots from the benches and a lot of Tiger Williams in his first years in the NHL.

I've never heard that version of the Canadian National anthem. It started out as the beginning of, " Good save the Queen" and ended with a condensed version of O'Canada.

I think that is Sam Nover with the play by play. He was in Detroit for a short time but as an intermission TV host, not a play by play man.

Denis Herron still wearing his Kansas City Scout mask 2 seasons after playing for them!?!. At least it was a cool design for that era.

I was at this game! To date it's the only Stanley Cup playoff game I've ever attended. Pittsburgh won 6-4. If I recall correctly, the sixth goal was a bank shot off the boards that went into an empty net.

I'm a Leafs' fan of 58 and still recall how difficult it was for them to put the Pens away here. A curious connection here between the teams: Rick Kehoe played for the Leafs. Dunc Wilson played for the Leafs. Dave Burrows would play for the Leafs. I think George Ferguson would play for the Pens. Ron Schock and Lowell MacDonald(from my home province of Nova Scotia) played on semi pro teams that belonged to the Leafs. Syl Apps,of course had that Hall of Fame father who starred for the Leafs. Randy Carlyle would star for the Pens and win the Norris.

The leafs lost that Carlisle deal. Dont forget Pat Boutette and Paul Gardiner

Ian Turnbull, long time Maple Leaf also played very briefly for the Penguins before hanging up his skates in 1982-83. He played just a handful of games with the Pens.

Carlyle, Ferguson Boutette, and Thompson all ended up with the Pens in late 70s and early 80s. Carlyle won Norris trophy then was traded in 84 as part of the tank job to get Mario in that years draft. These 3 game mini series were kind of a joke, you never got the idea you were in a real series. BTW Leafs in year 10 of cup drought which is now 55 years.

Some of us Leaf fans have never forgotten the trade that sent Carlyle and Ferguson to the Penguins for Dave Burrows.
@robertosborne86945 ай бұрын
@@orbyfan Burrows was a very good stay at home defenseman for the Pens, for several years, making a couple of all star teams. Got traded back to Pens along with Paul Gardner for what amounted to a bag of pucks and a jock strap. Gardner had 3 productive years with pre-Lemieux Pens

Yes I remember the blue jays played there first ever game and the Penguins would win the second game of the best of three series, as a 12 year old I didn’t think they leafs would win game 3. But ironically I thought when they played they crossed state of Pennsylvanian, Philadelphia flyers the Leafs go to Philadelphia win the first two games in Philly and come back home too blow all the games, typical leafs choking 70s and decades too come, when will the curse be broken.
