"When i clicked on this I wasn't expecting to see both the Jonestown massacre and The Miracle at the Meadowlands in the same halftime." Yeah, that struck me too. Another thing that hit me was, even though Brent Musburger does a fine job here, halftime shows are so much better now thanks in large part to Fox Sports. On the 1970s CBS halftime show, Musberger is fine, as always. But Phylis George and Jayne Kennedy are simply eye candy. Both are as wooden in their delivery as a petrified forest. Irv Cross, well, he's black, that's really all you could ever say about him. He only looked good in comparison to George and Kennedy.

The murders, not suicides, took place the day before, around 5PM Guyanese time, Saturday Nov. 18, 1978. It was not until around 11PM Guyanese time, that the first news reports trickled out. Even then, it was not known what had happened in Jonestown, only that Leo Ryan, members of the news crew and a defector (Patty Parks) had been shot at the Port Kaituma airstrip. It was not until the Guyanese military had entered Jonestown around 1 PM Sunday that the extent of the carnage was then know. First reports were that 409 had "committed suicide". The number steadily increased to 908. I know, because I was there as part of a US military detachment that arrived at 4PM local time from the US.

@1999glock2 жыл бұрын
@@johnscanlon2598 Officially, early body counts were prematurly reported by Guyanese officials, and lead to the suggestion that as many as 700 "escaped into the jungle". Once teams of forensic officials from both Guyana and the US arrived this was "adjusted" to a final count of 904 (I think). Many of the bodies were buried on top of each other and not properly counted. I dont see any "conspiracies" in this issue, as the body count for the first few days of Jonestown was constantly being "updated" day by day as more were being found and counted.

@@johnscanlon2598 No John, no Psyop. Simply a mass murder and suicide pact with a bunch of willing and unwilling cult members. Much "garbage' has been "ex post facto" created to make a conspiracy out of this event, but 2 things to consider. 1 Mark Lane, the father of ALL conspiracies, JFK, Marilyn Monroe, RFK, Peral Harbor etc. was there when it happened. Another opportunity to write another book. Secondly, when asked, Stephen Jones (son) was asked about "Green Berets, Special Forces, Navy Seals etc" and miltary ops conspiracies, he simply stated three words "That's Mark Lane".

Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk would die a week later. They had provided help to Jones. The city had provided children to the cult in exchange for the cult's money and campaign help in the 1975 election. Milk even wrote a letter defending Jones' privilege to hold one of the children (John Stoen), who had been taken from his parents upon dubious allegations of abuse. John Stoen was one of many children killed at Jonestown. Today, there are no commemorations or memorials to Stoen. He is forgotten, even as the gay community continues to honor Milk.

One of the most tragic and embarrassing chapters in American history. The State Department says they warned the Congressmen and entourage about the dangers of going to Jonestown basically alone. If they were that concerned, why didn't they send the Military in with them for extra protection? I was 10 when that happened and we talked about it for a week in Social Studies class. I asked the same question and was told Congressmen Ryan denied it. I'm like, If I'm the Head of the State Department, I'm telling Congressmen Ryan that you are NOT authorized to go if you don't take this major help! The sad part about all of that was if the Military had accompanied them no way Jim Jones would have had any chance to kill all those people. I know they had to have Intel on Jones that supported the fact that going into that jungle area with no protection was a mistake and as dangerous as it got. I give Mr. Ryan as much credit as any man of his stature for his bravery, but as often happens with men that rise to certain heights, they make the mistake that their status will be respected, but when they were on that truck and got to the airport they all knew the chances of them getting away safely instantly were reduced to worst than 50-50. If they had some "bring it if you want to" special Military personnel they may have had to still duck some bullets, but the odds would have been way better than 50-50! I'm still wondering why they were allowed to go to Jonestown basically naked, when they knew the man they were dealing with was heavily "suspect" mentally. Anytime you have these powerful religious cult leaders, its been proven that they are unstable and you can bet many of their followers were just as unstable. It was a suicide mission all they way, and I hope all involved in DC learned a valuable lesson. After that there were others that rose up, but at least here in America they watched them and moved in when the felt it necessary. Thanks for reading my rant. I can tell that I don't think we have anyone in Congress that would ever attempt something like that. Not because they wouldn't feel the need, no because I don't think not one has the brass balls to say, I'm going to check this guy out, and if anyone wants to go home, we'll get them out. He should be remembered and his crew that accompanied them should all be remembered as heroes for their bravery and representing the best America has to offer. I Thank All that gave their lives that day. I didn't have to happen that way, but it would be a bigger mistake if we don't remember them correctly and give them their due.

I suspect that the eleven-second silence (with only the "CBS News Special Report" slide on-screen) may have been because one of the other 4 P.M. (Eastern time) CBS regional games (San Francisco/Los Angeles Rams) was hitting halftime, so this news report could be seen on the full network without it being done twice for the viewers of Denver/Green Bay and then again a few moments later for those watching the San Francisco/Los Angels Rams game. But I think CBS also carried the Detroit/Oakland game, so Ed Bradley likely had to do a second special report for stations carrying that game.

The congressman had no real reason to be hypervigilent. No one outside the People's Temple really understood what a snake pit the place was.

@@seanmorgan9068 Dolphins were good also. Raiders went to 9 AFL /AFC Champion games from '67 to '77 and played in 2 SBs in that time. Tough competition in the Madden years but quite a feat.

Marvelous to see the inanity of the NFL broadcast team carrying on after the announcement of the killing of Congressman Ryan and his delegation. It said so much about priorities- a brief report, then back to the scores in a cheerful tour around the league.

@@michaelleroy9281 Most Americans received news of this incident the next day. Musburger even says, "As some of you may have heard-" The lack of preparation as Bradley prepares to go on air also indicates this was very much a breaking story, having just occurred in a remote location. There isn't even mention yet of the mass suicide/murder scene at the People's Temple site. Details overall remained sketchy.
