I bought a 78 back in 82. It was the first car i ever bought. Is white, red cloth,60/40 seat, with 400 4bbl and ttops. I still have it, driving on highway at 75 mph, it gets 21mpg! Still my favorite car.

My dad bought a '78 Magnum XE sometime around 1979-1980 with around 20 K on the clock. It was a Chrysler executive car, whatever the heck that was. The car was black on black and absolutely stunning being almost brand new. I got my driver's license shortly after Dad bought his Magnum, and it was always a treat when he let me drive it. He just about had a coronary the time I backed it out of our garage and damaged the car's side moulding by getting the back end too close to the side of the garage. One time we were at the grocery store drive up getting our groceries loaded when the Magnum stalled and wouldn't start again. Dad put up the hood to have a look at the engine, and about 30 seconds later a huge gust of wind came up and slammed the hood against the front windshield and shattered it into a million pieces! I'll never forget the look on Dad's face when the wind blew the hood of his beloved Dodge Magnum against the front windshield. Fortunately, the damage was covered by insurance as an Act of God. Thanks for posting this--it brought back a lot of memories of my old man and his Magnum.

My recollection is that the Second Arab Oil Embargo (1979) hammered the sales of this car. My younger brother had a gorgeous red and white Magnum for fifteen years and I was always taken by the styling of these fine-looking coupes.

BTW, I was an Employee of Chrysler Corp. in the Sales Department from 1977 until 1980 working in Natick Massachusetts at the Zone Office. I also have the ability to say that I actually drove one of our 78 Dodge Charger SE company cars and while it was in my care, ( a guy hijacked he car from me) It was stolen from me during a Jewelry Robbery at the Natick mall on Route 9. The car ended up in a high speed chase by the Natick Police recovered the undamaged in about 15 minutes.

I had one of these. bought it in 1995 when I was 19 yo. It was basically my first car as I'd always driven my dad's old 85 dodge pickup to that point. It had a great sound, and was pretty much mint with 78,000 original miles. Paid $1000 for it.

Those headlights were genius!! Way ahead of their time... look what we have today with transparent aero lenses over the lights. The Search-Tune digital radio at 2:19 . . . I have this in my Dodge, and made a video of the operation! Apparently this was a very expensive option when introduced in 1977.

Lake Nipissing makes me wonder what if American cars at the time had glass composite ECE headlights instead of outdated sealed beams. Imagine the different look many American cars could have had which you can see with the clear "covers" they used here.

Nice to see the original ad. Always wanted to own one when I was younger. Got one now. You rarely see one around, so they're kind of rare. Mines in great shape, completely redone in eggshell white. Only need the rear bumper needs rechromed. Transplanted 340 V8 with 300 HP helps. Parts are hard to come by and the monster barely fits in the garage. Hope to see more of them around. Maybe one day it might be a collector car.

I am familiar with Allpar and actually have found numerous writings and articles incorrect. I worked for Chrysler, I was there at the time. The Charger was sold in 1978 as was the Magnum, one didn't replace the other, they were both sold at the same time, that's all I'm saying. Magnum was only sold two years 78 & 79. Then replaced in 80 with the Mirada. The Charger sold from 66 to 78 before being discontinued. It's a myth that the Magnum replaced the Charger.

It's amazing how the 1978 Magnum is almost identical to the Charger SE/Cordoba when viewed from the side. The Magnum's sloping nose, Cord-inspired horizontal grill, and headlamp covers completely transforms the car, making it look much wider than its stablemates when viewed from the front.

The Charger was being made in 1978, the Magnun was sold in tandum. The Charger wasn't a Cordoba clone, frankly, it was the other way around. The Charger and Plymouth Satilite Sebring were based on the B Body platform. Chrysler had no B Body intermediate pre 75. For 75 with the restyling of the Dodge Charger and Plymouth Sebring, at the last minute, they killed the Sebring name for Plymouth and turned the car into a Chrysler and named it Cordoba.

@OsbornTramain Yes by the late 70's except for some badges and trim all the GM cars were just clones of each other. If you look at all of the cars, all the hard points are the same, you can take a Fury front clip and put it on a Cordoba and it fits. Didn't mean to dump on these cars though, we were a Chrysler family growing up and I used to have a 79 LeBaron Town&Country wagon until last October. I would love to be able to find one these now. Go ahead, continue an urban myth. Everything on the web is 100 percent correct. Because the car replaced the Charger in NASCAR doesn't mean it replaced the car in the showroom. And frankly the styling wasn't sharper, it was smoother for better aerodynamics. The fact that the Magnum's sales of 50 grand units were 10 to 1 compared to the Charger did accelerate the Charger's exit, but they were both scheduled to leave after 1979 to be replaced by the Mirada.

But yes, they are different cars....my point was that someone here called it a Monaco and it's not anything like a 2 door monaco and it's not based off the Cordoba, the Cordoba and Magnum were both B bodies replacing the 74 Charger.....they were developed at the same time. you can't say one is based off the other. Chrysler didn't have b body until 75.

The Magnum was basically an upgraded Charger, as was the Cordoba!
@OsbornTramain

The 78 Magnum was an alternative to the 78 Charger SE, Dodge had two Personal Luxury Cars to sell for 1978, the Charger SE and the Magnum XE. Cordoba evolved in 78 with much new Sheetmetal and the Magnum was new sharing some parts of the new Sheetmetal with the Cordoba where the Charger of 78 retained it's basic overall design with the 77 Charger but had a lot of upgrades and changes to trim and the interior appointments and colors.

At the time, I didn't like the styling of this Magnum. I thought that the car was so ugly, I couldn't imagine anyone driving such a car. Today, I like it. I might drive it if I knew someone who had one.

It's not a Cordoba, a derivative like the Cordoba of the B Body, Magnum, Coronet, Monaco, Fury, Satellite, Charger, Sebring and Cordoba.

OsbornTramain HEY THERE!! its in transit. Should be here tomorrow. It was a RED Magnum GT with white stripes? American Racing Wheels? Bidding stopped at $1900? He wanted $2400 and I bought it. looked like the clear coat was coming off? Red interior? Thats funny that you saw it. Im surprised it didnt go for more. Looks like it has the E58 360...which means there were like 584 (?) made with that engine code!! Very funny that you saw it! You NEVER see them for sale! I was interested just because it looked pretty straight. NOW I am doing research on the GT! 1672 were made! OH..and it has the original Citizen Band (CB) option!! COOL, right?

I wonder why they used the Magnum name on Charger based Wagons in the mid-00s? Surely Dodge has a name that's more tied to wagons that they could have used. Granted, Magnum is a badass model name.

how about it means both. Together.........on the same assembly line.......Back to Back .....on the same assembly line...the Cordoba, The Charger and the Magnum. (which didn't replace the Charger, the whole purpose of this string) Maybe you don't like my grammar but at least my car facts are correct, the Magnum didn't replace the Charger.

Any chance of finding any films on the mirada from the early 80's? even the imperial of the time OsbornTramain
@OsbornTramain
@OsbornTramain 10 жыл бұрын
I worked for a Dodge Dealer during this time period, remember the Mirada very well. But I don't recall ever seeing a film on one of them. I think by 1980, they were on video rather than film and I simply don't recall seeing it at our dealer. I'm sure there must be some video or film of the Imperial, but i don't have it. I will be uploading in the next couple of weeks, a 1963 Imperial Promotional Film. It's out now being restored. It's a great film....and I;m praying the color restores nicely. I'm now doing color enhancements of all future uploads.

ah ok that's cool, I just remember my mom having one back years ago and finding anything on them is near to impossible to do, its a shame because I remember it being a pretty nice car for the time. OsbornTramain
