I had a DT 400 when i was a kid about 19. I rode YAMAHA bikes for a long time. They make really reliable bikes.

Loved the reaction when she lit...priceless. 14 tooth sprocket sacrifices some top end for extra snappiness. A good trade-off. I've been riding my 78 DT400E since I bought it from the original owner...IN 1981 ! That's 35 years of some punishing off-roading. Very capable for a dual-sport. Was my ONLY dirt bike til I picked up a 1984 IT490 in 92. When I ride alone I simply hop on the DT and ride her on the street up into the hills for a day in the forest. She goes everywhere that my MX400B, my TT500, and my IT490 would go. Outran all of my buddy's dual-sports until they went to the XR-650Ls in the 90s. Picked up a 3.5 gallon Malcolm Smith Desert Tank last year to extend my range to 100 miles +. 78 was the LAST year of the street-legal Big Bore 2-stroke before the EPA made them unworkable. Thankfully, YamahaEnduro.com is full of folks devoted to keeping these wonderful bikes running...FOREVER.

I used to have a 1978 DT 400, I rebuilt the engine and found if you advance the timing and drill a bigger opening down in the baffle, because it only has an opening about the size of your finger, you can get more speed and power out of it.

hi i just picked one of these up and the engine start stop switch wire is just dangling .. can you tell me where it plugs into? im guessing somewhere in the headlight housing?

Matt H almost all the connectors are in the headlight housing.
