My neighbor gave me the opportunity to fix up his old truck, and I gladly accepted. His 1978 F150 has been in his family since it was new, but it hasn't been thoroughly used or maintained in a while. On a small budget, let's see what it needs to be reliable again.
2:18 - unseizing the wheel
5:18 - Under hood inspection
8:13 - First start
9:13 - troubleshooting the engine
13:00 - first drive
14:50 - Cleanup
23:14 - Fixing fuel gauge, brake issues
26:08 - Pressure washing
31:02 - Removing the brake booster
35:00 - carburetor removal and rebuild
39:40 - fixing the exhaust
41:17 - checking/fixing other small things
43:40 - Starter replacement adventure
45:30 - Bonus footage

My grandfather had a '78 Ford F-250 camper special, with the round headlights most of my life. It was his work vehicle. He was a programmer, but often did side work and he purchased and renovated several old properties over his life. My grandfather is notoriously bad at maintaining his vehicles, and I don't ever recall him working on that truck. Never once failed to start or left him stranded. Unfortunately, once he retired the truck sat in my families yard for years and rotted badly. By the time i was driving age i asked if i could have the truck to restore for myself, but it was so rusted underneath it wasnt worth saving. Always loved this style of Ford though. Beautiful design. Great video.

I love this kid. I love the lack of boisterous, voiceover narration. I love the lack of stupid loud, dramatic music. I wish you had an Amazon wishlist. I’d buy him a proper shop vac. Leave the house vacuum in the house! In an age, when many people get free money from the government for protesting anything, this kid has next to nothing and has 10 times the motivation even in cold weather. I never had kids my own, but this is my son.

Coming in late here. Had a 79, big six, four wheel drive, bought it new. I’m 70. That clacking noise is the exhaust manifold gasket. It was a THING for many of those. Not a fun fix. Another great video kid!

Wow. Young man I don't know who he was but he taught you very well. Hell I'm 52 and don't know half of that stuff. Great job you seem very knowledgeable around a old F150. I thought you bought it for yourself ...the way you treated it. It's nice to know there's still young men interested in auto mechanics. You would be amazed and saddened at how many 25 yo men don't know how to change a tire...let alone the oil to their own car or truck. I was taught bare bones basic tune up skills back when oil came in cans... ,filters , trany fluid, tire & oil changes, filters, Basic lamp replacement. How to properly air up your tire using a air gauge etc... Hell even drive at 11 y.o by my Dad RIP I love him for teaching me that I can teach my son. Keep up the good work & teach anyone who wants to learn.

Hello Simon, I discovered your channel this week, congratulations on the work and idea, really the 70s style and the way you put effort into your work brings an incredible sense of reality to the day of a good man, with so little and so much willpower you share excellent methods and attention from a mature professional, watching you reminds me of the 3 years I lived and worked hard in the USA, from coffee in the morning and the maintenance on my Pathfinder 97 that I had, there were moments of great struggle with that car, I'll never forget it, I spent 3 days and 3 nights trying to get the engine back to normal after changing the water pump, I ended up taking the engine out of sync, thanks to a friend of mine Joel, one of the best mechanics I've ever met, helped me with those days and information from my great Uncle miles away we managed to make the repair, so again congratulations on Canal as there are many like you who fight bravely every day, may God bless all the boys like you and these great automobiles that have marked our lives! !!!!

Decades ago; I removed the 1V carb on my 1978 F-150 RCSB 4x4 and installed an 2V adapter to the 300 ci L6 intake manifold and installed a Holley 500 cfm 2V carb. and the engine was not cold natured anymore, it had so much more get-up and go, it was like a different truck with the 2 barrel carb. Later I installed smaller 350 cfm jets in the Holley 2V and the engine still idled smother than with the 1V carb did and my fuel mileage returned to 15 mpg.

Hey there Simon. Watched pretty much all your videos. Excellent! I grew up in northern Minnesota (Brainerd area) in the 70s being a teenager did pretty much everything you’ve done. You might call it farm mechanics or shade tree mechanics. Basically being extremely creative. The only difference is the the stuff was a lot newer then. Plus we didn’t have a lot of the equipment like 20v impact wire feed welders etc. a lot of trial and error. You’re an awesome mechanic. Some old school mechanic must have taught you. Also your no BS video filming and overall quality and production is bar none. Ever watch primitive skills channel? No talking, just doing. Again great job Simon. Keep it up.

Had a ‘78 work truck years ago. 302 3 speed with OD (a very tall final drive made it only useful over 65). Regular leaded fuel, ‘78 was the last year. Excellent truck, blue chip FoMoCo. I see the rig was plated WI, from my side of the river…. Can’t blame your seeming preference for I6s, nice to wrench on.

My first vehicle. Mine had the rectangular headlights, they were optional in 1978. The original owner's dad owned several logging camps and he ordered it directly from the Dearborn factory, flew down to pick it up then drove it to Seattle and barged it up to Wrangell, Alaska which at the time was the lumbar capital of Alaska and the base of the family business. 4:38
