For your consideration this week we have a vintage digital Basket Ball game from 1978. If you had this game back then, you were a popular guy! Everyone wanted to spend hours playing! These machines were the first portable handheld games, they were the early version of the GameBoy.
This machine was not working when i received it. I found a broken connection on the mother board. A little solder and we were all good.
Please leave in the comments if you had one of these when you were a kid.
As always...Thanks for watching! RS

Ah ha! You are using the trusted "Retr0Brite" technique on the plastic. The 8-Bit Guy is who turned me on to it for various yellowed or discolored plastic parts.

Thanks for pointing out the bullfrog. Thought you were having breathing difficulties to start with 😃. Also, thanks for showing you pouring the peroxide back into the bottle - until then I was thinking it was a bit of a wasteful method! Good video.

I enjoyed this one. I never played this one or the football one, but I knew other kids who had them. I think my first handheld game was the Merlin. I find it interesting how simple the circuit board looks. Also the face it says "NON US PCB" which was made in the Philippines. edit- Now I feel old.

I had that exact same game. It was fun for a while, but then it became boring to me.

I’ve got my old hockey one, but the buttons to move are intermittent at best. I can usually go side to side but the up and down buttons nearly never work. Suggestions?

I’d pull it apart and check the contacts behind the buttons that aren’t working. Use alcohol with Q tips to clean the contacts.

I have a 2002 Mattel football 2 with 1 of the arrow keys not working properly so I took it apart and cleaned that 1 contact with 91% rubbing alcohol and now it works like new again. Thanks for the tip Rusty!

That screw head was made originally to mark this Mattel game as one that calls aliens, all you got was bullfrogs, sorry.

Well, if you're going to keep doing the EXACT same thing, week after week, to be frank, (you can still be rusty) I'm going to get bored. Week after week after week of Tonka toys. Couldn't we get something that's a little different? And what kind of Tonka toy is that anyway? There's hardly any pressed steel at all, and even though I am old enough to remember those things in the cul-de-sacs and winding lanes of the Lincolshire Steppe they're hardly heavy industry vehicles. No, but, yes, always better to stretch ones legs, even if OT is the OG in the field, didn't hurt Tysy to try and he's married to the most beautiful woman alive. If we carry on in this vein, are we more likely to have a pop at BareMetalHW or HTR I wonder? Watched it through twice now, and both times it ended the same way, very much unlike the exceptional 1985 motion picture 'Clue' also known in North America as 'Clue', one has to imagine because the Powers Booth that be thought most Americans would be confused by the name 'Cluedo'. Perhaps they suspected people might think it referred to Inspector Cleauseau. It's hard to imagine a person being put off by the name Cluedo also being willing to see a film named Clue as without any context I'm not sure you can draw any more conclusions from the one over the other, but having said that, it, of course, is an ensemble piece without peer, especially Tim Curry, Colleen Camp and Madelyn Khan. Five stars, would recommend to any fan of comedy or detective stories.
