Super Bowl 13 has to be one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time. Look at how many Hall of Famers were on both teams and even on both of the coaching staffs. If my memory is correct, this was also the last football game for the late, great sports commentator, Curt Gowdy working for NBC.

Mr. Lang, you did the 78 NFL playoffs with exact dates and order how NBC and CBS broadcast them on television. CBS broadcast all the NFC games and NBC broadcast AFC games. The Super Bowl was rotated each year between the two networks, which it was NBC's time to show SB XIII. Also 1978 was the first year of the extra wildcard team. It was the start of the 16 game schedule. It was the start of the Mel Blount rule, which prohibited defensive back playing bump and run on wide receivers all the way down the field. The db's had to release wide outs after five yard. 1978 was Earl Campbell's rookie record setting season. The Holy Roller game week 2: Raiders vs. Chargers The Miracle at Meadowlands week 12: Eagles vs. Giants Thanks for sharing.

Dallas should have won that Superbowl. They were the better team. 1. Pittsburghs kicker slipped and fell.on one kickoff, the ball skipped off a dallas upmans back and led to a Steeler touchdown. That was lucky and unplanned. 2. Jackie Smiths touchdown drop 3. A bad pass interference call on Bennie Barnes kept another Steeler touchdown drive alive.

so, again, the cowboy didnt have to try and return it, he could have downed it right there, but he fucked up, the steelers superior players didnt fuck up in crucial moments. jackie smith dropped it cause he simply wasnt good enough on that play, steeler receivers were sure handed on much more difficult catches, and made them, better players, better team. bennie barnes interference was a legit call, at the time the rule stated you could not impede the receivers route to the ball, him trippin up swann, impeded swanns path to the ball, which would have been another td if barnes doesnt trip him up. steeler dbacks didnt make those sort of errors that day, better player, better team.

@@wbmstr24 im a Dallas fan but I agree w you....EVERY time Dallas played Pittsburgh in a regular season or super bowl game in this era Pittsburgh won...that means they were better no question...it was just frustrating to us because Dallas was so damn good also but just could not beat them....and like you said Pittsburgh also didnt make the crucial mistakes that Dallas did and thats part of it...I still tell people today those Steeler teams were the best ever.

@@ElYahvecinLang The Niners put a couple of real ass whippins on the Falcons in the 80's well into the 90's. Thats who they could've been.Bartkowski had just as much talent as Montana, but he didn't have leadership capabilities to be able to inspire and challange his team to become better. In those days the difference between the starter on a championship caliber team and a also ran was huge and Bartkowski got exposed by the mid 80's and injuries got him traded. Then a few years later the Falcons drafted. a carbon copy of Bartkowski in Chris Miller and oh yes...Brett Favre. Miller had all the physical tools, but injuries and in a offense that was against all of the stratigies of good football, that damn Run n Shoot. Miller made a Pro Bowl and the playoffs, but he was out of the league as fast as he got in. Favre was raw and reminded me of a young Terry Bradshaw except for the fact that while Bradshaw went through his growing pains, the Steelers stuck it out with him and were rewarded handsomely with a HOF QB and 4 Time Super Bowl winner. Favre didn't realize his potential until after Atlanta was well in his rear view. It wasn't until Dan Reeves showed up and installed Chris Chandler that the Falcons finally got a taste of Championship bread. Too bad they ran into the Broncos with Elway. Since then the Falcons have been relavent, but still remain without a Lombardi Trophy, but as we've seen over the years, one QB can set. you up for at least a decade of being in the hunt.

As a Cowboy fan, the 1978 NFC Championship Game featuring the Dallas Cowboys on the road against the Los Angeles Rams in the LA Coliseum is perhaps my most favorite of all Cowboy victories. First of all, they avenged an early season 27-13 loss against the Rams at the LA Coliseum by shutting out the Rams 28-0 in the NFC title game.. And the Cowboys did it wearing their cursed and jinxed road blue jerseys

@@ElYahvecinLang I think maybe you’re referring to the Butch Johnson touchdown for the Cowboys against the Broncos? That player didn’t have anything to do with force out rule, but had to do with what was considered possession at that time. The referee ruled that when he left his feet, dove for the ball, and caught it, that he had possession of the ball when the ball crossed the goal line, and apparently nothing else mattered. The car was actually so much controversial when it happened (the Broncos definitely didn’t agree with it, since catching a pass in mid air and flying across the gold line is not exactly the same as, say, Walter Payton’s specialty of high jumping over a pile at the goal line for a touchdown while having clear possession ahead of time. Anyway, your point is well taken. The Butch Johnson played would definitely not be called a touchdown today. It would be ruled incomplete because he didn’t maintain possession when he landed.

Interesting (or not) useless tidbit, but for eight straight seasons (1973-1980), the NFC playoffs featured either a Rams vs Vikings, Rams vs. Cowboys, or Vikings vs Cowboys game and 5 seasons out of those 8 had two of them being played. Rather remarkable considering that only 4 teams made the NFC Playoffs until 1978 (5 teams in '78,'79,'80). Then again, for those of us old enough to remember NFC football in the 70's, most of the teams were habitually horrible.

Wild card game and the new rules with defensive backs not being able to be as physical on the line of scrimmage with wide receivers. Pittsburgh took advantage of it, big time. Stallworth and Swann were much harder to defend. I think part of the changes were to screw with the Raiders.
