One of the most devastating losses in Nebraska history.

I attended this game. I was a senior in high school. Absolutely one of the worst days of my Husker fan life. I root against Missouri to this day, and will forever. Wilder/Winslow/Bradley were fantastic that day. It seemed like they combined for 1000 yards. Huskers couldn't stop them, and MU won the game.

Loved Missouri's unis back in the 70s. Even their away unis were appealing.

As a kid, I remember liking the Missouri uniforms. The old gold and black, the helmet striping and the "M" on them I thought were tough looking. The last 20 years or so, Mizzou has changed their look so often I have no idea what a "typical" Missouri uniform looks like anymore.

I agree. Wish they'd just stick with the classic look.

Yeah I used to like them, and I loved Nebraska, and the Big 8, things changed for the worse.

This game got Bama back in the title game in the Sugar Bowl vs Penn St. NOBODY in Alabama expected Mizzou to win this game.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! One of the great games from a great football year. have wanted to record this game for a long time. 2 really great running backs. Wilder who went on to an NFL career, and Byrnes who I felt was very underated, but he made his point here and in the 78 regurlar season Oklahoma game.

That Missouri team had some talent. NFLers James Wilder, Kellen Winslow, Leo Lewis, Eric Wright, Earl Gant, Gerry Ellis, Chris Garlich, plus QB Phil Bradley, who went on to have a decent MLB career. They beat Notre Dame in South Bend to open the season and won a bowl game vs. LSU. Hard to believe looking at this game they lost four times in 1978 (though two losses were to Alabama and Oklahoma, both ranked #1 at the time). As a young Nebraska fan in 1978, I was shocked at this loss after having beaten Oklahoma and figured at the time that it was just due to letdown, but now I don't think so.

Missouri also beat USC to open the 76 season in the coliseum, costing usc another national championship. This class at Mizzou were giant killers.

Rick Berns is from my hometown of Wichita Falls, Texas. I worked in a health club in the early 90’s and he was a member. To say I knew him would be an exaggeration, but I would visit with him. Nice guy who was kind of quiet. Looks like he contributed to Husker football.

This win put Alabama into the natl title game vs Penn State. Had the Huskers won they would have gotten the Lions in Miami for the natty. So thank you kindly to the Tigers for that game. Incidentally my Tide beat Missou and Nebraska in that '78 season.

Great Missouri uniforms. I'd say they should go back to those, but I've long since lost interest in today's game. Don't care about any of it now, but classic football here - and a big win for Mizzou.

Fun Fact: This was the second straight season that Mizzou HC Warren Powers beat Nebraska in Lincoln. He beat the Huskers the previous year as HC at Washington State, 19-10.

Although the best fans in football wouldn't admit it, I feel like this was an underrated rivalry (save the 15-20 years of Mizzou futility). Mizzou fans were frustrated and embarrassed losing 24 in a row, and I've never heard a Husker fan say anything remotely nice about Mizzou. So there was clear animosity between the two fan bases. I miss the tension of Big 12 Football

I like how the QBs couldn't put enough mustard on the ball to hit a 5-yard out but they just casually dropped dimes 30 yards down the field in the biggest spots of the game

Missouri was the better team. Nebraska had a rematch with Oklahoma but what would have been better was a missouri rematch with Oklahoma. I promise Switzerland would not have been for that. Missouri was loaded that year and at the end of the year was the best in the league. They would have beaten Oklahoma in any kind of rematch.

Easy Mizzou Fan...You may have been the best team that day in Lincoln but that was always gonna be a tough game for Nebraska to win after the emotional win over Oklahoma the previous week. As for you beating OU anywhere at any time in 1978 tells me you need to put down the crack pipe. That was one of OU's best teams.
