This game was about 15 years before Penn State joined the B1G. This was therefore a non-conference game.

This was also the first time that Ohio State was shut out at The Horseshoe by a non-Big Ten opponent since, ironically, Penn State shut them out, 27-0 on November 7, 1964. The last time before this game that Ohio State was shut out at home by a team that is currently not in the Big Ten was when Southern Cal beat them 32-0 on October 11, 1947. So in other words, Ohio State was only shut out at Ohio Stadium by a current non-conference foe under Woody Hayes only once in 28 seasons under him.

Mine too! Woody’s final year! My recollection was that no one knew if they were going to start the freshman QB (Schliester?) till they lined up on the first OSU offensive series. Very exciting day; but, became going to a passing offense turned out to be Woody’s undoing.

A 3-4 Penn St team went into Columbus and crushed the undefeated #2 ranked Buckeyes, who didn't take an inferior opponent seriously. Rip had the boys playing that day while Woody worked up a temper.

Wow! Art Schlichter really sucked at QB on this day throwing 5 interceptions mostly forced throws into great defensive coverage. Did I hear the tv announcer call Joe Paterno, "Along with George Paterno, this is Ray Scott" at the 9:48-9:50 mark of this video clip?

Woody in recruiting Schlichter promised him he'd start his first game and the first play of the game would be a Schlichter pass and he kept both promises.

Buckeyes should have redshirted Schlichter in 1978 and started Rod Gerald at QB to run the option.

NOT TRUE ! This experience helped Art Schlichter go undefeated as a Sophomore and to take OSU on to play for the NATTY ! PS If Rod Gerald hadn't fumbled at the 23 that day, we most likely go on to win this game too.

Both teams were incredible, and little wonder it was so low scoring. Penn State's defense - awesome. Even when they ran no blitzes, the defensive front was in the OU backfield and harrassed them into some gambling passes that didn't work out so well.

Have to believe the Bucks defense, which played reasonably well for most of the game, got gassed and frustrated at the offense for wasting opportunities will all those turnovers. I had forgotten that OSU had actually moved the ball well in spots during this game, but always imploded. Schlichter, after he was banished from the NFL, came to Canada to play for the Ottawa Rough Riders. One teammate said that 30 minutes after first being introduced to Schlichter, Art asked to borrow money. That's how bad his gambling addiction was.

What a crock. Schlichter was an inexperienced freshman QB that Woody had promised to start in order to sign him to the program. Woody moved Rod Gerald, the QB who led the Buckeyes to back to back wins over the Lions, to wide receiver to accommodate Art. If Rod had started at QB, the Bucks would've won their third in a row over the Lions, who couldn't stop the quickness of Gerald running the triple option enough times to win a game.
@13kimosabi136 жыл бұрын
MC....Maybe you're right.....A coked up Gerald might have beaten PSU. I know for sure if Gerald hadn't fumbled at the 23 (after a great pass by Art that Gerald could never make) the Bucks would have scored and it may have been the difference. Also, this experience helped Art. He took the BUCKS to the Natty the very next year. If Earle kicks the FG, the BUCKS win the NC. SAD, because i'm sure Woody takes the FG and wins the NATTY in 1979. Sad he didn't get to.
