1978 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 Walk Around

Enjoy a quick walk around of a very rare optioned 1978 Firebird Formula 400. Build sheet states "Customer Order" and is highly optioned with HP 400 engine, 4-speed and Hurst t-tops along with power windows, power locks and air conditioning.

@@97MstngCobra lots of pictures and I still own it. It was my step father’s and he bought it in 78 and he drove it until 96. It sat in a rotting old garage until 2016 and I finally convinced him to let me have it. Dumped a ton of money and time into it. Still needs body and interior but it’s not too rough.

Sweet ride...I've owned nearly 10 of these 2nd Gen beasts. This one either spent its life garaged or was one of the few with the old early-'78 & down Hurst-style tops which managed to avoid the dreaded "floor-delete option". 🤕

I like the formulas because they had the stripped down look. Not many 1978 formulas were built im guessing. Only 3700 1970 formula 400’s were built

Hi Adam, they built 810 W72 Formulas with the 4 speed and 884 automatics (W72) in 1978. It is unknown how Many of the 4 speed vehicles were equipped with the Hurst T-tops. I have the original build sheet for this vehicle.

Hi Rob. thanks for your interest, I still own it. I have all the paper work/documentation for this vehicle. It was purchased at C James, Inc. in Detroit, Michigan. This may be your original vehicle, not many ordered with Hurst T-Tops and W72 performance option.

Love the car, to bad it has Hurst Hatch T Tops. Anyone buying this ride better own a garage and never go out in the rain. Worst T Tops ever installed. They leaked from day one. I know, I was a certified tech in the 70s.

Yep, most of the TAs & Formulas I've owned with tops had the later Fisher tops, but I had a gold '78 TA once (non-SE) with a fairly late build date (March) which still had the Hursts, surprisingly...along with the dreaded "floor-delete option' which usually came with them. 🤮

There is a Hurst "2nd style" kit available, replaces with different seals (they have a channel in them to help seal) and some of the hardware gets changed over to help create better run off valeys
