kano b truly missed yet, out of its misery. GM would of kept fucking with it and driving it's name further in the ground. The last true Pontiac muscle was the 2002 trans am. The gto and G8 came from Aussie Re-badged. Fun cars but not Pontiac designed. Hell even the G6 was a clone from Opel or some euro brand GM owned at the time. Douche bags had the world by the balls in the 2000-2004 era. But they pissed it all away with dumbshit investments and caused the death of Pontiac Oldsmobile, hummer and Saturn. They could of made billions with these brands if they would of restructured when sales started falling. Instead they kept pumping out cars that didn't sell.
@BuzzLOLOL7 жыл бұрын
Michael, the last true Pontiac engine was made in 1981... exPres. EvilBushJr. totally collapsed/bankrupted the USA and most of the world economies and companies by Sept. 2008 after 8 years in office and caused the GM and Chrysler quickie bankruptcies... Ford would have gone under also, but it had just sold Aston Martin or some other Division and had some working cash available (if they could get it out of a bank!)... www.wsj.com/articles/SB122169431617549947 .
@cobracharmer61787 жыл бұрын
BuzzLoLoL, how is it Bush's fault for GM building crap? Delorean keeping GM afloat through the drug trade. And Chrysler has always needed bail outs starting with Jimmy Carter. Then Mercedes and now with Fiat.Clinton deregulated mortgage and the banking industries in the 90's leading to corruption like Bernie Madoff bilking Americans $billion's. Ford going under? Never a chance. Ford invested $billions in Volvo, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mazda etc. and saved these companies from collapse. (which is my only pet peeve with Ford.79-93 Mustang, 89-99? T-Bird.Unchanged designs.Then the 2 seater T-Bird? What were they thinking?) If Ford made a retro Cougar, Mercury would probably be around? And as for Bush Jr? I saved up my tax rebates he sent out to millions of Americans during his term and with my savings, I bought a 09 Shelby GT500 in 11-08. Still own it today.

200hp doesn’t sound like much these days but it was all relative. Since the average family car had anywhere from 75hp to 120hp, you were king of the street in one of these…. until some kid pulled up in his dad’s 60s era MOPAR. This was actually a really fun time to have a sports car. Every little aftermarket upgrade gave you a real advantage on the street. If you had the cash, a cam and head upgrade would put that Mustang into to the low 13s easy.

I’m a 80’s man and these were the cars to have in their day. As for HP, you have to remember that we weren’t far out of the 70’s. In the 70’s, the American auto corporations sucked all of the hp out of their engines. The 350 in the 1979 corvette only had 225 hp and the ones in the Comaro’s only had from 155-175 hp. That in itself should show you what they did to the engines in the 70’s. The early 70’s mustangs were to heavy and not enough hp. Then they made that little turd that they called a mustang for several years in the 70’s with 4 and 6 cylinder engines for better fuel mileage. It was only in the 80’s that Ford started trying to make the Mustang fast again. I had a 1985 Black GT Mustang Convertible and I loved that car. No it wasn’t nearly as fast as the Mustangs today, but i loved it. I can still remember the first time I saw the new GT Mustang tv commercial. At the end of it they said “The Boss is back.”

I bought a new '85 IROC-Z / Z28 that was, 34 years ago now, a giant leap ahead of anything that Detroit had built in more than a decade, not so much in power, but very much in handling and braking. The Tuned Port Injection was super advanced compared to carbs. and Throttle Body Injection, and I could just see it was right for a blower and after the novelty of owning it for a while, I installed a Paxton supercharger. It then made as much horsepower as the corvette would make later in '92, with the LT1. Later, after the wife had gone, and the 3 kids were grown, I bought a Vette. But for a while in the late 80's, I had a very fast family of five.

That 85 4BBL 302 in the Mustang would blow away the old 68 J code 4BBL 302 even with far less compression. There were some freaks in the 60s like the 427 side oilers and 426 HEMIs and chevy COPO 427s but most of those 60s 400 HP cars were closer to 300 HP by post 1973 standards. You see it in their trap speeds. Pretty sure by 1985 the Chevy and Ford small blocks were making a decent bit more power than they did in the 60s.

I agree. '85 is when it all seems to have started taking shape. I had just started driving. I've read a lot of comments about how these speeds and 1/4 mile times aren't that fast, but this younger generation doesn't realize that this budding technology is what laid the groundwork for our newer cars. In the early 70's there were government restrictions on how much horsepower a car could have. It was due to the oil shortage or gas crises or some other govt. concocted crap. As a result, most cars of the mid 70's to early 80's were underpowered and slow as molasses. When the 85 Mustang GT came out, it was like a breath of fresh air. I've noticed a lot of folks talking about how fast the 5.7 liter (350 c.u. to us old timers) Chevy was but, evidently I lived in an alternate universe because, I had a stock '83 El Camino with the 5.0 (305 c.u.) and I could outrun 350's all day long. I couldn't come close to beating a GT though. The only GM car I know of that could even run with the Mustang GT was about '87 or '88 when Pontiac came out with the GTA. It was every bit as fast as the Mustangs GT's of those years. And back then, if you wanted a car that was quick off the line, you went with a manual transmission. There was a noticeable difference in a Mustang GT with a manual vs. automatic transmission. The GTA evidently didn't know that though. When I drove it is when I realized that an automatic transmission could be just as quick off the line as a manual. Good Times.
@331Grabber7 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Parris 1985 GT was great if you went with the 5-Speed. The autos didn't get the roller cam, headers or 4 BBL intake. they had essentially the same 2 barrel intake from 79 with central fuel injection. Only made 165 HP. I think later in that year they added the tube headers off the stick shift car and up the horsepower rating to 180. My 210 HP manual GT felt like a rocket compared to the auto.
@1VaDude7 жыл бұрын
The automatic Mustang GT was a lot slower because most of them had a "detuned" version of the 5.0L (actually......technically a 4.9 and not a 5.0; but I digress) or 302 V8. The 5-speed GT had the "5.0L H.O." with the 4bbl carb, while the automatic GT coupes came with the "5.0 EFI" used in the F-150 pickup truck and the Crown Victoria. If I recall correctly, the difference in 1985 was about 15 horsepower. For 1986, the Mustang GT also got fuel injection and went from 210 hp up to 215. In 1987 things got even better - as Ford improved the "5.0L H.O." and horsepower went up to 225. My first new car was a 1988 Mustang GT with a 5-speed. I could eat Camaro and Trans Am coupes for lunch - except for the IROC-Z and Trans Am GTA - which both were offered with the larger "5.7 TPI" (350) V8. Chrysler even put forth some pretty vicious front-drive performance cars too - but they were not the same. Even so, a 4cyl turbocharged Chrysler Lazer or Dodge Daytona could hold its own. They just were not as durable or fun as a rear-drive V8 car.

Out of the 3, i still have one, and it is the Firebird. Better ride, better handling faster than the other two. Over the years, the Firebird has received many upgrades, a new corvette engine, transmission, rear end and new engine management computer took the place of the old outdated 5.0L factory Chevrolet power train, as well as a new forward facing ram air induction hood. On the inside, new (at the time) top of the line heated 2002 Firebird leather seats, in dash dvd/gps/Bluetooth entertainment center, with remote start/alarm system. My 89 Iroc was a handling machine my Friend. Was not as quick as the GT but the Ford was no match as far has handling went. And that Red Iroc was one beautiful Car. Ahead of its time for sure. Great memories!

Mustangs sat too high for good handling, but lowered they drove like in rails.

SerenityNow, I guess you're too young to have heard about what was at that time, a very sophisticated design in the IROC's TPI, but that was 34 years ago after all ! Hey, maybe I'm your Pop? Ask your Mama, maybe she'll remember me, if she wasn't too drunk !

I Absolutely Love all 3 of these cars, Growing up I owned A 1989 Mustang GT, It was such A fun car to drive and the sound was A head turner, 2 and half inch Aluminized pipe with Cherry Bombs turned Backwards, I was an 18 year old punk that I thought could outrun everyone. I was wrong, What fun days those were, Great Video,

I remember how fast the fuel gauges would drop just driving any of those carburetor V-8's normally.....my 5L would go through 1/8 tank starting and warm up on freezing cold mornings - before I even backed out of the driveway.....and ran like dog poop until a few miles warmed it up fully....there's another 1/8 gone....meanwhile, my mom's 88 1.6L 116 hp 5-spd Corolla would go 400 miles on $9....less than what I spent on just one short drive to work....and it beat a Vega with a 327 swap once in a street race....

@@scottb8175 lol, no they don't out accelerate a 308 GT0 of the 70s even today. Corollas even in JDM spec which are the fastest of them are not remotely fast.

@@Flying_GC I read a road test where the 2-valve 308 did a 17.1 sec 86 mph 1/4 mile...that's pretty pathetic for a 3L V-8 exotic. The Corolla XRS's 1.8L 2ZZ best 1/4 ET for the standard transmission is just under 16 seconds....

I can attest to the IROC-Z cornering like a slot car. I walked away from many BMW's and 'Stangs with mine, and it was funny to see them sliding off the road or doing 180's on the twisties trying to keep up. The 2.90 stock rear certainly did NOT help acceleration, though it would still do a 0-60 in 6.6 seconds..
