kano b truly missed yet, out of its misery. GM would of kept fucking with it and driving it's name further in the ground. The last true Pontiac muscle was the 2002 trans am. The gto and G8 came from Aussie Re-badged. Fun cars but not Pontiac designed. Hell even the G6 was a clone from Opel or some euro brand GM owned at the time. Douche bags had the world by the balls in the 2000-2004 era. But they pissed it all away with dumbshit investments and caused the death of Pontiac Oldsmobile, hummer and Saturn. They could of made billions with these brands if they would of restructured when sales started falling. Instead they kept pumping out cars that didn't sell.

Michael, the last true Pontiac engine was made in 1981... exPres. EvilBushJr. totally collapsed/bankrupted the USA and most of the world economies and companies by Sept. 2008 after 8 years in office and caused the GM and Chrysler quickie bankruptcies... Ford would have gone under also, but it had just sold Aston Martin or some other Division and had some working cash available (if they could get it out of a bank!)... www.wsj.com/articles/SB122169431617549947 .

BuzzLoLoL, how is it Bush's fault for GM building crap? Delorean keeping GM afloat through the drug trade. And Chrysler has always needed bail outs starting with Jimmy Carter. Then Mercedes and now with Fiat.Clinton deregulated mortgage and the banking industries in the 90's leading to corruption like Bernie Madoff bilking Americans $billion's. Ford going under? Never a chance. Ford invested $billions in Volvo, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Mazda etc. and saved these companies from collapse. (which is my only pet peeve with Ford.79-93 Mustang, 89-99? T-Bird.Unchanged designs. Then the 2 seater T-Bird? What were they thinking?) If Ford made a retro Cougar, Mercury would probably be around? And as for Bush Jr? I saved up my tax rebates he sent out to millions of Americans during his term and with my savings, I bought a 09 Shelby GT500 in 11-08. Still own it today.

200hp doesn’t sound like much these days but it was all relative. Since the average family car had anywhere from 75hp to 120hp, you were king of the street in one of these…. until some kid pulled up in his dad’s 60s era MOPAR. This was actually a really fun time to have a sports car. Every little aftermarket upgrade gave you a real advantage on the street. If you had the cash, a cam and head upgrade would put that Mustang into to the low 13s easy.

I’m a 80’s man and these were the cars to have in their day. As for HP, you have to remember that we weren’t far out of the 70’s. In the 70’s, the American auto corporations sucked all of the hp out of their engines. The 350 in the 1979 corvette only had 225 hp and the ones in the Comaro’s only had from 155-175 hp. That in itself should show you what they did to the engines in the 70’s. The early 70’s mustangs were to heavy and not enough hp. Then they made that little turd that they called a mustang for several years in the 70’s with 4 and 6 cylinder engines for better fuel mileage. It was only in the 80’s that Ford started trying to make the Mustang fast again. I had a 1985 Black GT Mustang Convertible and I loved that car. No it wasn’t nearly as fast as the Mustangs today, but i loved it. I can still remember the first time I saw the new GT Mustang tv commercial. At the end of it they said “The Boss is back.”

I bought a new '85 IROC-Z / Z28 that was, 34 years ago now, a giant leap ahead of anything that Detroit had built in more than a decade, not so much in power, but very much in handling and braking. The Tuned Port Injection was super advanced compared to carbs. and Throttle Body Injection, and I could just see it was right for a blower and after the novelty of owning it for a while, I installed a Paxton supercharger. It then made as much horsepower as the corvette would make later in '92, with the LT1. Later, after the wife had gone, and the 3 kids were grown, I bought a Vette. But for a while in the late 80's, I had a very fast family of five.

That 85 4BBL 302 in the Mustang would blow away the old 68 J code 4BBL 302 even with far less compression. There were some freaks in the 60s like the 427 side oilers and 426 HEMIs and chevy COPO 427s but most of those 60s 400 HP cars were closer to 300 HP by post 1973 standards. You see it in their trap speeds. Pretty sure by 1985 the Chevy and Ford small blocks were making a decent bit more power than they did in the 60s.

Amazing cars!!! Had all 3 at one point. ‘85 T/A, ‘86 IROC and a ‘87 GT. All 3 had T-Tops and pipes. Good times in my High school and college days. Cheesy but sooo much fun!!! Thanks for the memories guys!

I had all 3 too. '85 Trans Am, an '86 IROC, and 2 '87 IROC's a coupe and a convertible. I also Had a '95 Mustang GT Convertible. To this day that '87 IROC-Z convertible in red with red leather int, 5.0 TPI with a 5 speed is my favorite car I have ever owned. I've owned a C5 Corvette convertible, and I currently own a 2011 Camaro 2LT RS, and for the last 30 yrs a '67 Chevelle SS Convertible.

I do think the Iroc-Z looks great now, even though I wasn't a huge fan back in the day. Whenever I find an 80s and 90s Camaro/Firebird (or even Corvette) for sale, 100% of the time they are automatics. Seems really rare to find a manual, especially the 350ci Camara/Firebird. On the other hand, Mustang manuals are much easier to find.

+SonOfTamriel Nobody made a 5spd that could last behind a 350, they were common to go out even behind v6s.The vette had a manual trans, but it was a 4spd with a od gear set add to the back. Google 4+3 transmission.

I had an 84 Trans Am, but mine was black on top, gold on the bottom and gold wheels. I didn’t think much of it at the time (because I was in high school 86-89), but it was pretty awesome in hindsight. I guess that’s a part of being young. You don’t always appreciate those times as much because you think your younger years will go on forever.

I actually forgot how low the V8's were designed back in the early to mid 80's. I was just a kid then so I only saw them and rode in them. I remember the Federal 55mph speed limit too, was brutal.

My first brand new car 1985 GT Mustang Black 5 speed stick . I worked at GM and could of bought a Z28 cheaper than the Mustang but as the video shows it was the best out of the 3 here.

That 4 speed automatic transmission sure held back the IROC. but man was that a fun car to drive. It really loved the curves or to just rumble at a stoplight. I had an 89 with the same white on tan color scheme (still my favorite) and with the 5.7liter. 255hp if I remember right. It would do just under 150mph stock. 😬 My dream would be to drop a 6 speed in there. That would make a huge difference. The problem was that the chassis couldnt handle the torque in the T-Tops and convertible. Such a gorgeous car though. Still the best looking gen Camaro. The next generation should be a retro IROC. 😎

I remember watching this video clip about a year ago lol. I’m a die hard “Mopar” man & as most of you know “Chrysler went down the tubes in the late 70’s & 80’s but Chrysler did have the Chrysler Daytona 4 cylinder turbo in the 80’s with a 5-Speed manual transmission & I got to drive one in the mid 90’s when I worked at a garage in my high school days & it also had nice grey leather seats & t-roofs, I think it was a push back at Ford’s 4 cylinder GT Mustang Turbo & Ford’s 4 cylinder SVO Mustang.

Great video. everything came out as expected. the Mustang is a runner, and the GM`s are for corners. Had a 86 Mustang GT factory stripper car, only a radio. ran 14.0 with a set of street slicks. Love the old comparisons. BTW, anyone else notice the inflation from then to now? $11k for a new 5.0 mustang, now were talking $40k!!!!! Holy crap!

The LX was faster, which is crazy, but thats how it worked. On inflation, that is what will happen when your government and the fed print $15 trillion dollars out of thin air in a span of about 10 years.

They're faster than the gm cars, but it seems like it's pretty much an economy car with a big motor. Higher center of gravity, short wheelbase, not real sleek. A lot of the cars In the drag racing videos that crash are foxbodies, that's probably why.
