I have a 73 TA only 250 HP but it’s the torque that makes it feel fast

This is one of the coolest cars I've ever seen....that blue paint and the interior are just beautiful. Thanks for the video, Tony!

I have always loved the look of these old Trans-Ams, particularly the 77-78 model like the one in your video. I live in the UK and these cars were never officially imported here. However, I saw a black "Bandit" model back in 1978, and loved the look of it. We had nothing back then that looked as good. I've been to a few American car shows here since then, and have photographed many of them. I still think they look good now, even after all these years.

a customer gave me a 78 just like this except it is a hard top and an automatic. It is a rust bucket, but im gonna get it to live again. It is the same color as this one too. I didn't realize it was a one yr color. So cool..I had a black 78 and im happy to have this one. I will restore it.

This is the car that I'd buy! The front lights the style I like and the blue color with the screaming firebird on the hood that I like. Dang I want this car!

Pontiac 400 was available in automatic or manual transmission. Oldsmobile 403 ci. were typically california emission packaged cars. The 400 pontiac typically had 6.6 litre on hood scoop and 185 hp. But a higher powered 220hp pontiac 400 was optional and had t/a 6.6 call out on hood scoop if i remember correctly.

That's contrary to everything I've ever heard. I think the guy in the video got it right, I've always heard autos got Olds 403 and manual got real Poncho 400s.

Had one just like it with auto trans, seemed fast then. Today I own a 15 scatpack challenger, TA seems slow now!

Everyone is talking about how it only has 220 hp. Remember this 400s only has 8.1 compression vs 10.5 or more on these new LS engines and the cams were only a .395 lift vs a LS mid 500 lift cam. The exhaust systems on these cars robbed power big time, the engine actually put out around 270 flywheel hp with no cats. With carb and ignition tuning would get you over 300 without having to pull the valve covers. With 10.5 compression and aluminum heads it is easy to get 600 hp 600+ ft lbs of torque out of these 400 engines.

I'm searching for a Trans Am of this era (though I'm partial to the 79-style headlights) but my problem is I want a daily driver. A car like in this video I'd never drive except at car shows because I'd be too nervous about a wreck and rock/debris chips. It's a hard decision, but I guess I could just pretend it's a normal, new car & expect normal wear & tear though it seems a shame to do it to such an awesome restoration. Guess I might be searching for one with a little wear already.

Beautiful car! If I owned it, I would swap out the engine for a 2017 Corvette 6.2 L LT4 Supercharged V8 Engine mated to a 7 Speed Tremec TR-6070 Manual Transmission that pumps out 650HP@6400 RPM & 650 lb-ft of torque@3600 RPM!

The second gen F-body was ruled by Pontiac...much nicer cars in looks, comfort, interior and power. Back in the day I had a 77 Z28 then upgraded to a 79 10th Annv T/A...there was NO COMPARISON...the T/A was 4 times better in every way.

Very nice car, but I don't like the T-tops. The only car I ever liked T-tops on was the third generation Corvette, and then only when the panels were the same color as the body.

Big power ?? Like 220 net horsepower ? Mid to late 70s Trans Ams were slow as mud as were Vettes and Z28s of the same period. In fact, the fastest US car in 1978 was a Dodge pickup - Lil Red Wagon. That's how slow they were.

Beautiful car but slow as shit, these things got so much smog control bullshit that that 400 put out just over 200hp. a p.o.s. civic today would blow that away ,sad

+Raul Chavez: There's a flip side to that coin... As far as I concerned, there's no comparing a beautiful vintage 70's Trans Am to some over priced, piece of shit, butt ugly, uncomfortable, tin can, gas miser, rice burning civic, or corolla, etc. Even by the late 70's, a Poncho 400 put out a lot more torque than some high revving 4 cylinder sewing machine. Not to mention the sporty looks, handling and comfort and accessories of the Trans Am. I wonder {actually I don't} wonder what some vintage or modern P.O.S. civic, or corolla, etc will be worth in 35 years. I don't give a rats ass about "good gas mileage", can you tell{?}
@jeffmclean43848 жыл бұрын
+Raul Chavez ya for sure man. In high school I owned a 78 formula and it was a 350 4 barrell and only put out 170hp..was sad...long story short ..put in a 69 327 with 350hp..what a difference..lol

I always felt the 77 and 78 T/A had the looks but not the muscle to back it up. However, my personal opinion is...its a good foundation. Limited slip diff, decent trans whether auto or 4 speed, a 400 that could good be fairly snappy with a good cam, headers, pistons, headwork, a decent alum intake and double pumper without breaking the bank. Had a 79 with the pussy 301, but I will say, the car looked the part, M50's with deepdish cragars, too bad i had motorcycles and girls on my mind, that could have been a fast car with a 400 smallblock and a few inexpensive goodies. And to this day...many Mustangs and few other "factory muscle cars" later, I'll tell anyone... that 79 with the stiff radial tuned suspension plus the M50's was and still is to this day the best handling and driving car I've ever driven.
