1978 Stanford at Arizona State

This is the 11/11/1978 Stanford at Arizona State game. Both of these teams were Bowl bound. There were two excellent matchups in this game. Bill Walsh vs Frank Kush in the coaching matchup and Steve Dils vs Mark Malone at the QB Position. The most interesting part is that both quarterbacks almost perfectly reflected their coaches philosophy. Dils was a cerebral read and react guy which fits Walsh's philosophy to a tee and Malone was the hard nosed run first which fits Kush's style. I claim no rights.

1978 AzSt win vs USC remains among the all-time home wins in ASU fb history. I attended 1982 ASU miracle comeback win vs Elway & Stanford (81 yards in 49 seconds w less than 2 minutes left).

That '78 win was sensational, though in those days we in the eastern time zone heard very little about it.

This is a really interesting random game. Pouring rain in Tempe. Three future NFL QB's (Dils, Malone, Pagel). Two future NFL head coaches, each with a completely different trajectory and of course, a young Jim Lampley! Also, it seems like most of the ABC games unearthed from that time period feature some combination of USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Alabama or Nebraska. It's great to see some other teams show up for once.

Mike Pagel, who punted for AzSt in this game, quarterbacked a unit that led the nation in total offense (1981) & (Jess knows) later started some games for the NFL Browns at qb1 (around 1987 or 1988?).
