Watching a football game with football players, as I did in college, provides a unique perspective. They told that, reputation aside, offensive linemen are some of the smartest people on the field. Their roles are often described as "applied geometry".
@americandissident906211 ай бұрын
This is true. The QB and the center are often the smartest on the team. The TE is often highly intelligent as well, and many FBs have good smarts. Seems that blocking requires intelligence. The TE has to block almost as often as the offensive line and then also know when to run a route.

Honestly american football is more analogous to chess than association football. Different positions with different strengths and weakness all needing to be used in such a way to overcome the strategies of the other team. Anticipating their next moves in order to find weaknesses in their offensive/defensive tactics. For a sport thats stereotyped as having a meathead fanbase, it has a lot going on under the surface.
@LurksLessons6 ай бұрын
I absolutely love this analogy, and you're spot on. To build on it, unlike Chess pieces that follow their designated moves, the element of human unpredictability is significant. You can devise the perfect strategy to outmaneuver your opponent, but the excitement of the game is heightened by unforeseen events like a dropped pass, a twisted ankle, or even the ball being dropped before crossing the goal line for a touchdown celebration. All of it makes you yearn for the next slate of games to come around.

Coming from the UK I would’ve understood very little of this except star roles, but hammering 2K NFL for a few years I learnt all these spots except a couple subtleties - great to learn thanks. What I’ve never learnt is some of the rules such as who’s allowed to line up where, who is eligible to receive, offside etc.
@Literally-God Жыл бұрын
If there's one thing I've learned from watching football for years, it's that you'll never stop learning new things. In some games there will be rules even the announcers (who may even be former NFL players themselves) weren't even aware of.
@GregFalcon Жыл бұрын
The formation rules aren't that bad. An offense must have seven players within a yard of the line of scrimmage ("on the line"), and the other four players lined up farther back. All players in the backfield are eligible receivers. Of the seven on the line, the two outside players are eligible, and the five in the middle (almost always the center, guards, and tackles) are ineligible. The two outside players that complete the line will vary: for example, if a tight end and wide receiver are lined up on the same side of the field, one will be on the line and the other a yard back, but either arrangement is allowed. This is a lot for the players and refs to follow, so restricted jersey numbers are used to make it manageable. Ineligible players wear jersey numbers in the 50-79 range; other numbers are eligible. A formation is illegal when a player with an eligible number lines up in an ineligible position or vice versa (unless they declare themselves to the refs, this is occasionally done and will be announced over the PA). In practice, a violation of this rules happens when a tight end and WR on the same side of the field are both on the line. If this illegal formation penalty is announced, the wide receiver will be said to be "covering" the tight end (who is thus ineligible while wearing an eligible number). On passing plays, the ineligible receivers aren't allowed to go more than a yard downfield -- this prevents them from confusing or hindering defensive backs. If a pass is thrown in this situation, the penalty is "ineligible man downfield". When this happens in practice, it's usually because a play has broken down, and a scrambling QB throws an unplanned desperation pass without realizing a lineman is downfield. Offsides is straightforward: players on either side of the ball must line up entirely behind the ball. The narrow strip of field the length of the football is called the "neutral zone"; it's offsides against either team if a player is lined up with any part of their body in the neutral zone.

This is a great video to start. But honestly, it's not that bad. As soon as you learn that a team are just trying to get 10 yards, and have 4 attempts to do so (shown on TV by trying to get from the blue line to the yellow line), and if they make it, they get another 4 attempts to make the next 10 yards, you have it. So all 1st attempts are 1st and 10. If they make say, three yards it's 2nd and 7 (yards to go). That's it really. One you get that, the rest falls into place.

I never knew that each team had so many different roles. So, depending on if your team is on offense or defense, you'll have different players/roles on the field and there are infinite substitutions? It feels weird to me that half the team is resting while waiting to again be in the correct phase of the game to play. Or do teams sometimes field a mix of offensive and defensive players in case they steal the ball and have a chance of turning defense into offense?
@douglascavanaugh516010 ай бұрын
No mix. After a turnover (fumble recovery or interception by a defender), play continues until he is either tackled, runs out of bounds, or scores a touchdown. If he does not score a touchdown, the clock stops and play does not resume until the opposing offensive and defensive teams come onto the field. You must not think like Euro football or basketball where the players can be on offense or defense in any given moment. Rather, each team has an offense and defense and each of those teams come onto the field depending on who takes possession of the ball.

I've had a casual interest for years, but only in the last four or five years have actually started taking it more seriously. Thing that struck me, is that if your team is winning, and there are only 10 seconds left on the clock - your team can still lose!. THAT is the thrilling part, but this game is seriously addictive. Yeah, I’m going to assume you are more familiar with rugby and soccer (as the concept of both teams on the field at the same time pertain to those sports). Think of football as a tactical-specialized rugby, instead of constant playing it is a play-stop-play-stop. But in those stops on between plays the offense must choose a play and the defense must choose a scheme. The offense and defense switch either when the offense scores points or if the defense forces a stop or a turnover.

@crystaltran301011 ай бұрын
@@notn0t yeah they usually play some advertisements during the transition, that's why American football isn't that popular with the rest of the world, too many ads. The pocket is created by the offensive linemen. When the defensive players try to rush the quarterback, the O-line kinda moves into this U-shaped formation around the QB while trying to protect him, that's a pocket.
@yurmxto11 ай бұрын
the slot is the receiver that is in between the o line and another receiver
@LurksLessons11 ай бұрын
Fantastic questions! The "slot" is the location on the field between the outside Wide Receiver and the Offensive Tackle. "Sealing the Edge" is a coaching term where the Offensive Tackle blocks at the edge of the offensive formation for the Running/Half Back runs without getting tackled if they run towards the outside of the offensive line, as oppose to up the middle. To your question about players subbing out for Offense and Defense, it's true. At the High School level, in where players will typically play both Off/Def, the collegiate and pro level have players be specialized in one position. You'll have your rare cases of course but the higher the competition goes, the more specialized that player is at their position, thus only playing Off/Def. The "pocket" was already explained wonderfully by @crystaltran3010. Appreciate your questions and hopefully that helps!

OC or HC can be responsible for play calls, some HCs are fully defense-oriented so they leave the OC for calling plays. Just a note, a throw can be made to the running backs and handoffs can go to wide recievers as well.

It’s very rare, tends to be more of a gimmick or situational thing. I think of fullbacks as just a type of running back who specializes in just barreling through whatever they can.

Nice you should become a 49ers fan. They have the most faithful fan base. They also have the most interesting players, what's the funniest post-game interviews in a coach that is better than any other coach in the entire league. Hopefully we won the Super Bowl and then you become a fan. Also this sport is better than any sport that your country has and I don't even know where you're from. Basketball is great too but it's hard to find a team that won't disappoint you every year so I just choose to be fans of several teams but the Warriors are great and when they're good they are the most exciting team to watch in history

Linebackers ig, in some plays they have to play coverage while other plays they must sack the qb, putting their body fully on the line. Edge rushers are a close second imo

You talked about free safety and strong safety, difference being one is on the weak side and one is on the strong side. What the heck are strong sides and weak sides?
@CENTRALEAGLE68 Жыл бұрын
Strong side refers to the "strength" of the offensive formation. This basically means the side that the offense has the numbers advantage to vs the defense. So if the offense has more people to the defenses left then the strong safety would shift left. The weak is just the safety who goes to the weak side.
@Kube_Dog Жыл бұрын
@@CENTRALEAGLE68 Oh, so like if if I have a WR, slot receiver and a TE on the right, but only 1 WR on the left, then the right is my strong side. And the strong safety would shift to that side. The safety on the left side with the 1 WR would then be the weak side safety.
@yell0wberry Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I always start a free safety with someone who mainly helped out the corners and the strong safety was the guy mainly responsible for going toe to toe with the tight end
@Kube_Dog Жыл бұрын
@@yell0wberryCan Madden really let you control details like that?
@nwj03a Жыл бұрын
I played safety in college (D2) and high school. Strong safety, at least in my experience, lines either in the box, and/or with the TE/RB. It depends a lot on the play call, so there’s no universal rule. Generally speaking, the strong safety is more of a linebacker, the free safety is more of a corner.

No... everyone must be fast and strong...well maybe except for the kicker...but then, even the kicker must be able to tackle the runner if everyone else misses... Watch a few games and you'll figure it out pretty quickly...

Almost zero chance. You could try to get into the combine, or an open try out. However, the complexity of the NFL playbooks, and the amount of incredible skill needed, would keep all but .000001% of the world from getting to that level Antonio gates never played football until the NFL, but he was a highly rated college basketball player There is one guy, it's a fairly famous story, who was discovered by a player. He never played in his life and went on to have a great career... however, the dude was two meters tall and naturally over 140kg
