I bought a 1980 TR8 conv. in 1980 in Vancouver....owned it for 12 yrs and had lots of fun on the west coast down to Cal. and in Europe with it.....fantastic car with a superb overtaking gear and great handling....I still miss it even after owning many other cars.

My father had a pre-production TR8 coupé that I was blessed to be able to drive in the 1980s. Glorious car in its day.

I worked in JRT metallurgical lab during the TR7/8 period. The shell in bare metal with a lot of CR1FF steel was very good, hopeless rust proofing however. Pity they weren't galvanized.

Derek has a way of truth about cars totaly different to say Quenten Wilson and Clarkson who both have been "Got at" politicly. Derek says it like it is , will not suffer fools and is proper old school no nonsense . Even old Arfur himself could not sell a car to Derek if it wasnt cotia !!

I really have a lot of questions about this car. First I thought that all the pre-production card were automatic. Second they never put fule injection on the cars until late 1980 or 81.

America insisted on Fuel Injection for their emissions.

All early TR8 were carbs, thats injected, not aware of any rhd going stateside. Early production 7s were crap but later models when production was moved were far better.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Should be carbureted not injected.

I saw a brand new TR8 in the same color scheme for sale at the Triumph dealership in Rapid City, South Dakota, in 1982, It had the dual Stromberg carbs, not fuel injection, In 1980, only the TR8s sold in California had fuel injection. In 1981, all TR8s sold in the USA had fuel injection, and all were convertibles. I bought the last brand new TR8 convertible the deanship had in June 1982. It was a great car.

Need to speak to the TV crew, some quality mic's will do the job. Anyway, TR7's were clearly considered junk in their day, no amount of buy British good will could help it then. Rose tinted specs, skew things today.

@@leslierogers1276 you make the assumption I never owned or drove one? On what basis. My opinion has nothing to do with rust 40 years later, most of them were dropping to bits after less than 10. This car is not the run on the mill TR7 hence the valuation. Even the TR purists turned their backs on the 7. If it had been launched with a V8 as standard then it might have been different. We all have our opinions and mine comes from being around them in the trade back in the day so not as uniformed as you may think.

@@leslierogers1276 wrong again, I worked in a BL main dealer, told me all I needed to know. As I said each to their own. Just like marmite some love most hate. BL products suffered from poor build quality it's a fact.

The TR 7 is a misnomer , it was never ever a TR it was an abomination to the marque.
