I liked this Cardinals team. It was the last season for Lou Brock and he batted .304. Ken Boyer was the manager and he was a favorite Cards player growing up with Stan Musial and Bill White. This team had big seasons from Ted Simmons and Keith Hernandez. This was one of the few god seasons in the 1970s for the Cards. Not enough to win the division but they were a good team. JR Richard sure pitched well until his stroke. Thanks for placing on KZbin. Roger Freed had some great moments as a Cards pinch hitter.

I remember Templeton was really good then too.

JR Richard is still the only Astro to throw 2 300+ K's in a season (1978-1979).

JR Richard could have pitched in any era.

I remember listening to the last few innings of this. The 79 Cardinal team was a fun but frustrating team to watch, I attended quite a few games. Fun because Keith Hernandez had a MVP season, leading the league in average, runs, and doubles. Simmons was having his best season and may have won MVP but he broke his thumb and was out a month. Templeton had his best season. But the Cardinal pitching, specifically the bullpen, was awful and continually blew leads. In the off-season they did nothing to repair it and Boyer would be out as manager in May, replaced by Whitey Herzog. Buck, Starr, and Shannon were an excellent broadcast crew. Bob Starr left after 79 to go to LA and take the job as voice of the Angels and Rams. He was one of the very best football PBP guys I ever heard.
