1979-1980 Chevy Corvette V8: Flowmaster 40 Series Vs Straight Pipe!

Not a Flowmaster fan at all. But this time, the Vette with the Flowmaster sounds better than the straight piped white one. That era of C3 Vette’s weren’t powerful. But they had beautiful lines. I’ve had 3. But my dream is a ‘78 silver anniversary with a manual trans and t-tops.

Love when non-carguys say these Vettes had no power. They have a SB Chevy. They have as much power as you want them to have. My buddy has an 80 with a 383 and 4.11 gears. It's plenty strong. A big block even fits nicely and was factory till 74. If there is a downside, it is the weird disc brakes, power steering and headlights, which are all troublesome. This is why Camaros, etc generally sell for more. A Vette is higher maintenance.

@@johneary8874 I guess the proper term would be. Minimal power in their OE configurations. Yes modified, small block Chevy motor can be massaged and built into monsters. But these were not those motors.

Those classic vets were not fast by any means but, they looked and sounded amazing. True Chevy thunder right here, folks. The Flowmaster and the straight piped ones sounded beautiful. No other word to describe it. Compared to these classics the new ones sound terrible.

I’ll never forgive the EPA for the slaughter they caused on late 70’s - early 90’s muscle and sports cars. 305’s and 350’s with 185-200 HP. 454’s with 250HP like wtf 🤦🏻‍♂️

Flowcrapster mufflers do not sound “deep”. They sound hollow, like dumping the sound into a metal 55 gallon drum. Awful.

I like them both but I would have to go with the flowmaster, especially since straight piping a car in Tennessee is illegal. I had a buddy that had a 1981 Corvette and it was a bit of a dog in addition to being a specially hard to work on. 🤔 Tennessee's muffler law is in Tennessee Code Title 55, Chapter 9, Part 2, § 55-9-202: It's illegal to drive a vehicle on a road, street, or highway without a muffler that's in good working order and prevents excessive noise and smoke. It's illegal to use a muffler cutout on a vehicle. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor. The law doesn't apply to farm tractors or implements of husbandry. "Excessive or unusual noise" includes motor noise that's louder than similar vehicles in the area, or that's over 95 decibels. A person can defend themselves against a charge of excessive or unusual noise by showing that their vehicle's muffler doesn't exceed 95 decibels.

180 minimum in 1980, some are a little higher than 200hp if you get the L82. Mustangs made worse for the time, same with most muscle cars in the early 80s.

In Pennsylvania the state has changed it's law on vehicle engine swaps, as of January 4 2025 a car with an engine swap has to be retitled as a reconstructive vehicle and has to have a Pennsylvania enhanced state inspection. Soon our government will have every state doing this
