@@Ruda-n4h Panenka himself called it "a falling leaf". A slowly falling leaf in an autumn forest..he was called a poet of football. In his home country the penalty is better known as Vršovický dloubák or "A chip from Vršovice" after the neighboourhood where Bohemians have had their stadium. Recently, he was a guest during a penalty shoot-out during Euro 2021. When asked how many goals would he score out of 5 penalties, he said, "if I could make it to the penalty spot because my hips give me hell, then I am sure I would score 5 out of 5." He is not a big ego guy, he was not bragging, he was being honest. I am sure he must have missed a penalty in his career but I remember him scoring every time. And he did it in high profile games. He was pretty slow and he admits he cannot remember a single header. But he had a golden foot. For a midfielder he was rather prolific, in his two best seasons for Bohemians Prague he scored 15 and 14 goals. The regime deidn´t allow players to legally play abroad until the age of 33. He went to Rapid Vienna. And in 83/84 season became the league´s best goalscorer with 18 goals and was Cup Winners´ Cup best goalscorer with 5 goals in 7 games he played on the way of Rapid to the final against Everton. He played as a sub in the final. His penalties included the Euro final in 76, the Euro 80 bronze medal game against Italy, the only two goals of Czechoslovakia at the World Cup 82. That was his last international performance. He played 59 games for the national team, scoring 17 times. He was shown two yellows in all those games. In his debut against Scotland in 1973 and his last game against France in 1982. He was also famous for his free kicks. The one against Greece at Euro 80 was the fastest goal of the tournament. Interestingly, his club football is divided among Bohemians and Rapid - both teams play in green and white. In both clubs he is considered to be a club legend. Bohemians, a team I support, won their only league title in 82/83 season, after Panenka had left the club. Their legendary coach/player Tomáš Pospíchal, as a player he was part of the World Cup silver medal team of 1962 where he set up Masopust for a 1:0 lead in the final against Brazil, later said that they would have never won the title if Panenka was still on the team. Pospíchal´s most famous saying is "There´s no logic to football." Although he had spent his career in rival clubs of Baník Ostrava and Sparta Prague, his 10 years as the head couch of Bohemians 1977-87 saw the club achieve its best results. Famously, Euro 84 qualification started with Czechoslovakia playing Italy, who had won the World Cup only a few months before, at San Siro. The CZE national team featured 9 Bohemians players. The Champions vs Bohemians ended 2:2. The national team failed to qualify...party because a home game against Sweden. Enzo Bearzot left the stadium 2 min before the end to catch a plane. He left when the score was 2:0 and then learnt the Swedes somehow managed to score twice. Or a draw in Cyprus and a final match referee...CZE had to beat Romania in Bratislava. A Hungarian ref did not inspire much trust beforehand. Then disallowed a clear goal for an offside. With 1:1 Romania won the group and qualified for its first Euro. Panenka won his only two league titles in Vienna. For Bohemians his stats are 230 games/76, in Rapid Vienna 127/63. He was part of a special generation that won Euro and Olympics. Czechs are credited with winning the Euro 76 but in fact there were 3 Czechs and 8 Slovaks in the line-up.

Interesting story. I have always been a great admirer of Danubian and Slavic soccer in general. But I noticed that since the Berlin Wall fell, all Danubian and Eastern European soccer has never again been a major player in Euro-World Cup competitions. Sounds like the champions of yesteryear are no longer born, the tradition of great Eastern European soccer seems to have permanently dried up. The Western hyper-professional system seems to have spoiled everything.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, world football has lost half a continent, the whole Eastern European football sector, that had always expressed great champions, aces, and great team, now.has permanetly dried up. The great tradition of that football has disappeared forever, now it is no longer competitive with Western teams, as it had always been in the past. A real bane for world football
