Was a member of the UK Ducati Owners Club that used to meet in Fulham in the early 1980s. We would go on club runs with lots of these SS models, along with MHRs, Darmahs, 250/350/450s and some Pantahs (to add a descant pitch into the open-conti'd cacophony). With maybe 50 plus bikes travelling down narrow streets the funnelled noise was remarkable and glorious. People half a mile away must have wondered if there was a squardon of WW2 bombers heading thier way.

My brother in law used to have one of these, he bought it brand new in the day. Had a few rides on it as a pillion. Sweet. He now has a 750 Gt, 750 SS and a 860 Darmagh.

rustyosh : He sure does, and has had quite a number of other bevel Dukes in the past. Myself, I recently bought a 620ie Monster, I cant afford a classic Duke, nor will my Licence allow me yet, LAMs bike only for the next two years. The Monster should be good regardless.

Beautiful bike! I'm watching everything I can on old bevel twins to kick myself in the arse hard enough to start working on my 80/81 MHR. It doesn't need much but time and some money. I''ll make some vids of my own along the way.

I know I’m horribly biased and my opinions on what constitutes a lovely motorcycle are not modern in any way shape or form, but here they are anyway...... I think the bevel Ducatis are among the most handsome bikes ever made. Starting with the 750SS Desmo and ongoing. Admittedly the one bevel twin I had, an 860GT, probably doesn’t count, it was troubled stylistically. Ducati seemed to have that Italian artistic flair in bucketloads, the orange 750 Sport is breathtakingly lovely, the Darmah was a pleasant surprise. And then the 916, dramatic styling perfection. Sadly for me Ducati have lost their styling flair and the later machines I find uninteresting. Perhaps my taste is frozen in the 1970s.
@rustyosh4 жыл бұрын
John Edwards I agree, you’ve got to love the bevels. I think the 860GT was initially thought of as a bit of an ugly duckling, but it’s becoming way more popular in recent years. I like them and I think the only thing that let them down a little was the radical side covers
@grahamreeve52093 жыл бұрын
You're just right. Problem must be, having created the 900ss and the 916, where do you go from there?

1979 I had a choice - one of these or a Suzuki GS 1000 as Ducatis had a nasty habit of being temperamental and doing big ends. Guy who bought the Ducati smashed it up about a mile up the road. Beautiful bikes with Contis but you had to know what you were doing with them mechanically to keep them running properly.
@rustyosh4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Hoffman mine has always been totally reliable. Great starter and runs like a top. It always pays to stay on top of things though...servicing, maintenance etc, and I change the oil every two or three thousand kms. I think keeping the oil fresh is the secret to long life...and of course, staying upright...
@MrAndrew19534 жыл бұрын
rustyosh My main concern was that since I didn't know a lot about mechanical maintenance, I was better off sticking with a Japanese bike. Ducatis had a bad reputation for requiring expensive big end rebuilds. Ron Angels dealership in Richmond did a lot of that I understand.
